Right, a few things.

VividCon

[livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn posted here about the Trek and Merlin room parties on Saturday and Sunday nights respectively. There will be flyers with exact times for both, but Trek is tentatively between 9:30 and 10:00 and Merlin on Sunday at a somewhat earlier time.

Completely unofficial badfic reading will be at the usual place at the usual time on Sunday. You know. If we did that sort of thing.

DVD Commentary Challenge

It started! Go sign up! More information here for those who are unfamiliar with it.

[livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur and I would like to welcome everyone to the 2009 DVD Commentary Challenge.

Your missions, should you choose to accept it, is to pick another author's story and write a DVD commentary on it. Cutting and pasting the rules, since really, why reinvent the wheel?

The Multifandom DVD Commentary Challenge!

The rules are slightly different from the normal DVD commentary. This is a commentary on another author's work.

The Rules

1.) Any fandom and any pairing or lack of pairing thereof is welcome.

2.) More than one person can do a DVD commentary on the same story.

3.) You must have author permission. I want this as fun, not as trauma. You can call a story first if you're worried about getting it before someone else does, but permission is a must for the challenge.

4.) Deadline for submissions is 10/1/2009, 11:59 PM CST. There is no deadline for sign-up.

5.) There is no limit on the number of commentaries you can do.

6.) All commentaries are hosted at (or at least linked to), [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary. I'd prefer posting directly to the community. If you want to post it to your lj as well, I only ask you wait until 10/7/2009 to give it a minimum of a week up at the comm.

7.) You can post your commentaries to the community as soon as you wish.

*first posted to [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary
So it's almost August, and [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur and I are prepping (and by that, I mean, I am just re-reading the rules and she's off being innovative) for the Fourth Annual DVD Commentary Challenge.

Short version

The challenge runs from August 1st to October 1st, in which readers have the opportunity to write a DVD commentary on another writer's story. There will be two posts, author permission and commmentator sign-ups, both of which will go up on Saturday, along with the rules and regulations (of which there are few; I am a fan of minimizing).

All fandoms, FPF and RPF are welcome and wanted. The challenge is open to all fandoms. There are no limits to the number of stories you may write commentaries for. [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary is where commentaries will be posted; feel free to browse and see what this is all about. An index was created here by [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur, along with links to significant posts.

We've had kind of epic responses the last three years, so we're both hoping this year will continue to top out.

ETA: Corrected the below. I swear I had a coherent thought here and then it went--wherever it was. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur. I--really don't know what was going on with that one.

Author Permission

We require author permission for DVD Commentaries of their stories. If an author wants to be commentaried, please add your name to the author sign-up page. There will be a post for author sign-up, along with some small changes we're making to future procedures for this.

Commentator Sign-Up

See above--if you want to do a fic and the author hasn't given blanket permission, please contact the author.

General

More information will be posted on Saturday, August 1st. Feel free to browse the index, see waht people have done and are doing, and get an idea if this is something you want to do. I will say, these are incredible fun to read when completed, almost as much fun as writing them. The links to 2008's rules are in the index for reference.

So. Saturday August 1st, we'll get this thing going. If you have any questions, you can ask here or wait for Saturday for the complete announcement and rules.

Most importantly, have fun! This is pretty much my favorite challenge of the year. New to me fic, commentaries, and HTML. You really cannot beat that combination.
I know there's something I'm supposed to be doing other than editiing FanLore....

Right.

~~~~~~~~~REMINDER~~~~~~~~~
DVD Commentary Challenge
We're up to the wire now. Plz to be getting your commentaries in. You have all of today. Go at it! Go to [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary whenever you are ready.
Carefully peering out to check for more Dow crashes. Suddenly, the story about the sky falling makes so very much sense.
Accomplishments
I wrote fic about a dangerously incompetent cat-nabbing ring.
I read Prison Break fic and try to keep some kind of sanity in the face of OMG HOT.
Much More Interesting Stuff
Oh! Fanlore Wiki is open!
Now, you, too, can document fannish history in wiki form. Which is actually weirdly fun, since me and [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur emailed back and forth saying things like "Wait, when did DVD commentaries in general start?" and "Are you sure 2005?" and "OOho, but I saw one earlier I think!" So we can cite. Because this is happiness.
Um. Go, play, remember embarrassing things about fannish history to add. You totally know you want to!
And Last Stuff
2008 DVD Commentary Challenge closes at 11:59 PM tomorrow. You have all today and all tomorrow.
Now, this is where I also say, if you have started already and you know you are going to be delayed, email me or Jin ASAP. This is for indexing purposes--we don't shut down the community between challenge dates, but we don't like, check it either for indexing all that often. You can leave it here or in the latest entry at the community, but please do tell us. That way we'll both know to go look at it and add it to the master list.
And that's it for now. If today is like yesterday, perhaps we will have more Portraits of Stockbrokers in Distress.
REMINDER
A reminder to everyone playing, the 2008 DVD Commentary Challenge ends as of Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at midnight CST.
That's two days and fifteenish hours in front of you to finish up any commentaries you're still writing. And have fun!
Yay, it's announcement day!
Dead Letters Variations
First, The Dead Letters Challenge has been closed with a total of twenty-seven entries. My thanks to the participants, who all made me happy.
DVD Commentaries
We are now at month two of DVD Commentary Challenge being hosted at [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary. So far, participation is excellent and sign-ups continue apace.
[livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur and I would like to remind everyone of a few key points:
The due date is 10/1/2008, pre-midnight CST for posting. You can continue to sign up and post commentaries until that time.
To sign up to write a commentary, go here.
To give permission for your stories to be commentated, go here.
To read commentaries, a running list is kept here for 2008, and an index for 2007 and 2006 is here. All of this is courtesy of the ultra-organized [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur.
Other Stuff
I--um, maybe later. Okay, the thing is, I am writing this thing and it turned into curtain fic, even though it's supposed to have at least one murder and you know, stuff, and I kinda feel sugarshocked by all the domestic goodness. Do you know why? Because I cannot make myself destroy their happiness.
I sicken myself sometimes.
Note for the future: find a better way to do author sign-ups. Just--so that is out there. Find a better way to do them. And there are more this year, which I verified by going to look and yes, of course intellectually I know a challenge has a period of years of escalation before they reach terminal and either plateau or slowly and painfully die, but--still.
That is so freaking cool. Don't mind me. I'm petting my challenge and not reading the first ones up until I get through page ten on author sign-ups. That's my reward for being good and doing my work. I am very motivation-oriented.
Right.
DVD Commentary Challenge
DVD Commentary Challenge is up and running. There's been one significant rule alteration that is just basically a way to get more commentaries mentioned this weekend. If you are interested in participating or simply wish to look at the all the posted commentaries so far--yes, there are people who have already posted them. I love my life!--mosey to the community, [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary.
Dead Letter Variations Challenge
We have a month left until the end of the Dead Letter Challenge, so you have plenty of time to kill a character and write a letter. Rules are fairly loose--I want an epistle and I'm not picky how dead they are to get it. Read the rules, ponder universal mysteries, be morbid.
Well, That's It
I have no plans to be interesting for at least, uh, a month. I am, however, attempting to write porn and rediscovering the fact that doing it in a new fandom is hideously embarrassing. Wait, just think about it. It's like dating, you know? Writing porn isn't necessarily a commitment--whee boy, would I be a hell of a fandom slut if that were true--but it's a fairly large fannish step. Actually, for me, when I'm willing to mutilate anyone, it's a marriage, but just go with the metaphor. This is the part where you have to you know, hope that thing you learned in that last fandom with your tongue and the electrical outlet isn't considered all icky. What if no one else does that? Does that make you a pervert? Yes, actually, but we celebrate that. What if everyone does it up against a wall with a carrot? Christ, I hope not, I can't face organic vegetation. It's like this with every fandom. Especially with one who has had ten million partners before you or so the archive seems to imply.
(You know the worst? QaF? Full freaking panic attack; I mean, you really can't beat canon unless you--well, you can't. There were canonical orgies, kink, and drug use and prostitution. I mean, people, there's a reason I tried het there. That was edgy and kinky and weird.)
dS == easiest fandom in the galaxy? y/y?
Welcome to my Monday. It's actually not too bad.
Just to make sure I hit everyone....
Rule Change for [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary to simplify it a bit. Basically, the rule about multiple commentaries no longer exists. The same story can be done by as many people as want to do it. Sign up, however, is still required.
Also, email went out to volunteers. If you did not get one, please comment here. Thanks!
Hmm. Okay, [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur is the technical (and highly organized) side of this operation, so hoping she'll swing by here.
I love this time of year. I know the rest of fandom has yuletide, but here? This is my happy place. This is where I get recs for rainy days. This is where there is feedback that can last for twenty something pages.
Okay, enough of that.
Request for Volunteer(s)
I'd like to ask that anyone who really likes writing commentaries or has free time and likes doing things, people of very weak will who will take suggestions as orders if I just say it in a very firm voice, or who thinks they can use this favor against me later for blackmail, email me at seperis at gmail.com. There's something I want to try and I'm going to need some help doing it, possibly a lot, I don't know yet. Probably not a lot. Probably not much, now that I consider it, but I could also be trying to lure you into a false sense of security and I'm actually asking you to build me a terrible and epic archive to crush my enemies. Probably not, though. Some of you have met me. Do I look like an Evil Overlord? No. I just look like someone with a deadly addiction to caffeine.
Random note: it so does not feel like Friday.
And lo, it comes again. Crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary
*eyes sign-ups*
You know. It's weird. For some reason, I always assume not that many people will be interested. This strange low challenge-esteem dates back to SV, but--
Er. Huh.
I'm thinking I should have posted only the list for commentary sign-ups *first*, then 'forgot' and came back to do the author sign up. Though so far, there's around fifty fandoms represented there. So much awesome.
Also, I'm halfway through adding page three of author comments. Dear God.
Commentary Information
A couple of things you'll find in the community.
Font Color, Bolding, and HTML Is Your Friend for those who want to get an idea on how a commetary might *possibly* be put together. As long as we can see the commentary separate from the text? Any way works.
...ooh. Or *audio*.
I'm pissy right now for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that I was going to upgrade [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary to paid so I could customize it better. Grrr.
Random question--for long stories (ie, over three posts), is it better to post to lj for easy access, or post to webpage directly?
Annnnd--it's that time again!
The The Multifandom DVD Commentary Challenge! Moderated by yours truly and the charming [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur who agreed to help set this up again. We should get a catchy name. Sepinjur DVD Challenge. Jinjeris DVD Challenge. Something catchy.
It's like puppies! And candy! And a way for me to stop thinking dark thoughts on high calibre weapons when the motrin? So does not work.
Pulled from last year, pretty much the same, some updates.
So winner for the weekly prize for hypochondria--I freaked out when I realized I had a tiny bit of chest congestion!!!!!
Ended up sleeping from 2:30 PM on Tuesday until roughly 9:30 PM, got up long enough to check my email and sneeze copiously, eat, whimper, and then go back to bed until 7:30 AM. I'm like some sad ball of unproductivity.
I really wish my zen were closer to the skin these days and not, you know, hovering in another dimension. Everything's way too sharp right now. Mostly I want to run away. I mean, to become a cabana girl in like, Aruba or something. Even though I have no idea what that job is, if it exists, and I dislike too much heat.
OTOH, beach. In Aruba. And there is no possible way any family member will find me because all of them hate to fly!
(Just found this out recently. I have decided my incipient nervousness with flying is going to go away now in reaction. Oh yes. I will re-learn how to love to fly. Love.)
Pony
I saw a miniature pony. My life is complete.
Work
So I got this weird email from the programmers who work on the client-contact-tracking program we use to--well, track clients who call us. I have spoken of thsi before, with the informal user guide becoming a User Guide for everyone and then became....
No, no idea how this happened.
I'm validating changes. Informally. But. Okay.
One of the guys has been updating me on program changes and improvements and before I went on vacation said for me to go to the practice area? Place they play with to implement changes. TESTING AREA, got it. Okay. So I said sure and went there and played with the things they asked me to check on. I made some notes, told them casually, was asked to email a few, I said sure. They said it would go into produciton this last Monday. Okay, I said, still playing with reports. And saying, hey, why does x and x do this?
Right.
So I get in Monday. The new version was not put into production (general use). Why? I had not validated it.
Me: What?
Boss: Did you--
Me: WHAT AM I DOING? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? DO I GET A PUPPY?
Boss: *sighs* You are never getting a puppy. Also, what the hell?
So apparently I'm--validating things. Yeah. No idea what's up with that one.
Fandom/DVD Commentary Challenge
I decided to do the DVD Commentary Challenge again this year, pending participants signing up for it. It'll run from August 1, 2007 - September 30, 2007, with all entries to be in by midnight September 31. A formal entry about it will be up in the next week or so to start sign-ups--though signing-up can continue up until the last day. More information here and under the tag DVD Commentary Challenge.
To see what was done last year, go to [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary.
Fandom/General
I feel vaguely like doing something dramatically nice. I just have no idea what. Suggestions?
Wow.
A total of 65 67 DVD commentaries in fifteen fandoms (I didn't even know there was a Beverly Hills 90210 fandom).
I'd like to thank all the commentators for doing such a wonderful job in explaining what made these stories so wonderful to them. This was amazing fun! And I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!
For a complete list of completed commentaries, please go here.
And finally, thank you to [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur for taking over the called list for commentaries as well as tagging the entries. I'm very grateful for your work on this.
In summation: whee! Commentaries to read!
We're on our last week of the DVD Commentary Challenge, and this is a reminder if you're participating, teh deadline is Sunday 12:00 AM CST, October 1, 2006.
things of today
First and most important thing:
Here the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ltlj gave *hysterical* comment fic set in the Retrograde universe. Post-Vegas. Adorable. Wonderful. OMG JACK.
You can see why she's one of my measuring sticks of my own work in SGA, right? That's just *cool*.
DVD Commentary Challenge
Okay, I've sucked with keepingn up with the challenge responses and I got very lucky. [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur has offered to help out, so we're splitting it between us and bringing it up to date. And I will not let this fall behind again.
I owe her, God, I don't know. Maybe I should hunt down her fandom of choice and write her something for it? But yes. Cookies for [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur for being so awesome.
Dental Continuance
You know it's bad when your dentist comes in, opens your mouth, takes a look, and immediately offers you a stronger painkiller. My white-lipped silence must have said a lot. I don't even want to know what that tooth looks like. I mean, seriously. Not at all.
Anyway, he referred me to an oral surgeon, so I'm calling this afternoon to get that out of the way and scheduled while waiting for my script to be finished. I took two more vicadin when I got home from the dentist, since I hadn't been sure if it was okay to take them right before a dental visit. Expect more of the warm and cuddly jenn wandering around--seriously, if this didn't make me itch like an attack of hives, I could easily be a really functional junkie on this stuff. I sit around thinking how much I love everyone, am moved to tears of sheer joy and gratitude when [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn chats with me, and offer up dirty weekends to [livejournal.com profile] amireal while telling her about my feelings. It's all very glossy and not a little creepy. But luckily, in the glossy place, I lose my line between friendly and scary. Or I'll be the one between doses who snaps short and that's very not of the good.
Um, so if you are the person I snapped at? I'll be apologizing tonight. It wasn't you at all--I just had to wait for the next dose and it was screwing with my mood. If I'd just stayed off for anotehr hour or so, I wouldn't have been like that.
Okay, the new dose has kicked in. Let's do some more comfort fic!
Comfort Fic Recs, Group Two
Quarks, Quantum Chromodynamics and Other Unproven Theories by [livejournal.com profile] amireal
I love this one for so many reasons this, too, will need numbers.
fic spoilers ahead )
And one more, before I pass out in the pretty place. Or just lay in bed and stare at the ceiling feeling *way* too good.
Fearless, Mindless Fancy by [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek
I love this one just for being so freaking *fun*. A haunted house! John the psychic! Rodney as Scully! Evil supernatural thing! How could this not be the funnest, happiest, cutest thing *ever*? Made of love. One of the Harlequin Challenge responses that made me all "Awww" and "Mmm" and *pretty*. I want a sequel to this like no one's business on their next wild adventure. So. Much.
Okay, quick note for those participating or thinking of participating in the Multifandom DVD Commentary Challenge.
I set up a community to keep track of the posts, because it can only lead to disaster if I try and do the entire thing here.
Community - http://community.livejournal.com/dvd_commentary/
The signups will continue here. The only thing I'm keeping there is the claimed stories list, a short link section on where to find things, and some other stuff. All commentaries when completed should be posted there to keep them conveniently in one place, but I set it to open posting, so you shouldn't have to join to post to it. I don't think. I am not Miss Knows Communities. I am Miss Nods When Someone Else Sets Them Up. It's kind of embarrassing, actually, now that I think about it.
Anyway, I am--really getting all excited about seeing the commentaries! I'll set my own claims up today on fic, I just want to give as many people a chance as possible to claim what they want first.
To fulfill my New Year's Resolution. I said, I'd be more fannishly aware, fannishly active, fannishly participatory, and you know, *useful* to the community. So I host a challenge! Yes, that was my brilliant *one in the morning* idea.
here we go.
The Multifandom DVD Commentary Challenge!
The rules are slightly different from the normal DVD commentary. This is a commentary on another author's work. The rules are fairly simple.
The Rules
1.) Any fandom and any pairing or lack of pairing thereof is welcome.
2.) One DVD commentary per story--if you know what story you want to comment on, post here with title and author. A dozen commentaries on The Greatest Fic Ever is nice, but let's go for variety and breadth.
3.) You must have author permission. I want this as fun, not as trauma. You can call a story first if you're worried about getting it before someone else does, but permission is a must for the challenge. A convenient list of authors who gave pre-permission is here, done a while back. A few also gave open season on their stories here. If you are an author who has no problem with it, reply here with name and website. I'll put together a list out of this entry and the others, assuming the authors remain okay with it.
4.) Deadline for submissions is 9/30/2006, 12:00 AM CST.
5.) The minimum is one commentary. I mean, if you're taking on the five hundred thousand word epic of wonder in your commentary, I'm not asking more than that. No upper limit, however. Do as many as you like, in as many fandoms as you like.
If there's enough interest, I'll set up a community to hold them--kind of one-stop shopping, so to speak, of big fun. Watch here for that. Otherwise, I'll gather the posted commentaries into a memory folder for easy viewing.
Anything I've written or cowritten is disqualified from this challenge. This does not pull permission to do it outside of the challenge.
Okay! You're done! Choose your story and go at it!
Right. We're done. I have a horrible feeling that I should have run these rules by [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn to see if I left anything out, but okay. We'll go with this. Please feel free to pimp this out if you like. I'll post to the communities I belong to tonight, but seriously, *multifandom*.
Now, really done.
Except for this:
ETA: A list of claimed stories is here. I'm just using that list to keep track. Continue claiming stories in this entry.
The community DVD Commentary was set up to post the challenge commentaries in. And some people already are! I'm kind of in awe here. Anyway, for the called stories list and to see posted commentaries, go there.
Updated community 8/17/2006 wiht claimed and completeed DVD commentaries up through 8/17/2006 at 9:39 AM.
You know what would be fun? DVD commentaries on someone else's story.
I really have no idea why I think that, but it suddenly amused me to imagine myself doing the commentary line on a fic I hadn't written. then I could put in my 'what the fuck' and 'ooh. *slick*' moments, and point out the places I jumped and went 'oh my god WHY?' and 'i wonder if she would marry me'. And my personal epiphany moment of any fic--when I get up and run for coffee--not walk. *Run*. So it can't, I don't know, fast forward without me?
I need another rabbit.
I so did not mean that. Put down the phone, [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn I DID NOT MEAN IT.
