things of today

First and most important thing:

Here the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ltlj gave *hysterical* comment fic set in the Retrograde universe. Post-Vegas. Adorable. Wonderful. OMG JACK.

You can see why she's one of my measuring sticks of my own work in SGA, right? That's just *cool*.

DVD Commentary Challenge

Okay, I've sucked with keepingn up with the challenge responses and I got very lucky. [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur has offered to help out, so we're splitting it between us and bringing it up to date. And I will not let this fall behind again.

I owe her, God, I don't know. Maybe I should hunt down her fandom of choice and write her something for it? But yes. Cookies for [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur for being so awesome.

Dental Continuance

You know it's bad when your dentist comes in, opens your mouth, takes a look, and immediately offers you a stronger painkiller. My white-lipped silence must have said a lot. I don't even want to know what that tooth looks like. I mean, seriously. Not at all.

Anyway, he referred me to an oral surgeon, so I'm calling this afternoon to get that out of the way and scheduled while waiting for my script to be finished. I took two more vicadin when I got home from the dentist, since I hadn't been sure if it was okay to take them right before a dental visit. Expect more of the warm and cuddly jenn wandering around--seriously, if this didn't make me itch like an attack of hives, I could easily be a really functional junkie on this stuff. I sit around thinking how much I love everyone, am moved to tears of sheer joy and gratitude when [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn chats with me, and offer up dirty weekends to [livejournal.com profile] amireal while telling her about my feelings. It's all very glossy and not a little creepy. But luckily, in the glossy place, I lose my line between friendly and scary. Or I'll be the one between doses who snaps short and that's very not of the good.

Um, so if you are the person I snapped at? I'll be apologizing tonight. It wasn't you at all--I just had to wait for the next dose and it was screwing with my mood. If I'd just stayed off for anotehr hour or so, I wouldn't have been like that.

Okay, the new dose has kicked in. Let's do some more comfort fic!

Comfort Fic Recs, Group Two

Quarks, Quantum Chromodynamics and Other Unproven Theories by [livejournal.com profile] amireal

I love this one for so many reasons this, too, will need numbers.

1.) TIME TRAVEL! I love the use of sci-fi tropes--common ones, fun ones--especially where the characters meet a future version of themselves. That rocks so much.

2.) I love Rodney and McKay both. I love how they were alike, the subtle differences that age and experience and you know, marriage make between them. I love how they both handled the weirdness. I love that they time-shared John and were totally careful not to call it that.

3.) I love how McKay was using his own body as a diagnostic tool to figure out how to fix the time stream. Kick ass. And unique enough that I don't remember ever seeing it before.

4.) I love that Ami didn't try to overexplain how the time travel looping and stuff thing *worked*. Just enough to get a surface idea; otherwise, terrible quantum headaches.

5.) Love John; John in love with Rodney and of course in love with McKay. Love how he and McKay fit together. Love that he *couldn't* see a difference between them, because they were the same person. Love how they were so comfortable together and yet just that bit off. Love how this is affecting him with both Rodney and McKay. It just--yeah. All of that.

6.) I love, love, love the multiple plotlines; bringing Grodin back was my favorite bit, and the other small ways that Rodney changed things. I *love* the thing with the papers at the beginning.

7.) Love how John went for his gun when Rodney made a certain noise.

8.) And finally, love General Sheppard coming to pick up his wayward scientist. That bit *rocked*.

And one more, before I pass out in the pretty place. Or just lay in bed and stare at the ceiling feeling *way* too good.

Fearless, Mindless Fancy by [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek

I love this one just for being so freaking *fun*. A haunted house! John the psychic! Rodney as Scully! Evil supernatural thing! How could this not be the funnest, happiest, cutest thing *ever*? Made of love. One of the Harlequin Challenge responses that made me all "Awww" and "Mmm" and *pretty*. I want a sequel to this like no one's business on their next wild adventure. So. Much.

I sit around thinking how much I love everyone, am moved to tears of sheer joy and gratitude

-- the question is, why is House such a crab-pot, then? Is he permanently between doses? Would his baseline be *even crankier* if he'd never met Vicodin?

I pray weekly that [livejournal.com profile] amireal's way of bringing Grodin back will be inked into canon. Best ass on Atlantis, babe.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2006-09-05 05:19 pm (UTC)
See, that's scary. Though maybe other people don't get the euphoric kick?

But *wow*--his baseline must be plain scary.

And ditto on Grodin. Damn.

The man eats Vicodin like they are Pez. I love how every time he mentions the word "addiction" in a diagnosis, he is reminded to take another one.

Um, kiddo, if the Vicodin makes you itch, YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IT.
Stop taking it and tell your dentist, right away, please.
(I'm off penecillin and codeine for the same reason. I was taking them together, told my MD brother they made me itch, and he had me off of that and an allergy mention in my file before I could sit down.)

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2006-09-05 06:12 pm (UTC)
Well, I kind of guessed from the itching, but since that's the only symptom, and it's the only painkiller that works on me consistently, I didn't really worry about it. Though I do take a benadryl with one usually, or one of my allergy meds. It's not visible hivish things, just--itchiness.

From: [identity profile] lillian13.livejournal.com Date: 2006-09-05 06:14 pm (UTC)
The bad thing is, eventually it won't stop at just itching, and you'll get a real allergic reaction, and those are neither fun, pretty, nor safe.
But let your doc know, pleas?

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2006-09-05 06:21 pm (UTC)
*nods* It really didn't occur to me that it was anything--well, worrisome. I mean, I have fairly odd nickel reactions too.

Oh, did you still wnat to do dinner sometime this weekend or next weekend? I'm sorry about the delays on this--I keep geting busy and thinking about it when I'm *away* from my computer. I'm taking my son and niece ice skating Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and Friday is SGA night (god, woudln't it be great to find a restaurant that would play the sci-fi channel so we could eat *and* watch?), but Saturday night looks fine. We should totally pin this down. I mean, *food*. Also, it's the beginning of the month. I can *afford* to go out for dinner.

Email me at jenn at thegateway.net when it's convenient for you.

unbeta'd. Alas.

******

McKay waited patiently in the copilot's seat while John fiddled with dials and levers. He was pretty okay with just watching John work. Even if he wanted to get his hands on the obviously different equiptment while he could still remember how this ship was different than the one he'd traveled in.

But mostly he just looked.

There was a moment where the stars blurred and space bent and twisted and then *pop*. Something inside McKay's chest eased and John just released the controls with a heavy sigh and sat back in his own chair, easy slump and sprawled limbs so familiar. "Thank god," John muttered, turning to McKay with a broad grin.

"We're back?" McKay asked, already sliding out of his own seat. He didn't really need an answer. He could read the machine better than even John sometimes.

"Oh yes. See that slightly brighter pinprick of light at seven o'clock? That was that thing with the big gun and the two wraith hive ships."

He looked, taking in angles and coordinates. Below them Atlantis was a careful blotch in the calm sea. McKay knew this sky, *knew* it. Not just remembered it, but knew it. A small welling of joy, higher and tighter and sharper than when he'd first hopped off that exam table with so much less pain the absence was shocking, spread through him, warm and happy and some little insane part of his brain rolled over and died.

"Good." McKay sighed, twirling John's chair around. "Great."

John was already scooting foward and opening his arms even as McKay climbed up, god so easily, the memory of shooting pain even now fading into the background, and wrapped his arms tightly around John.

"Terrific," John mummbled into his neck, holding back just as hard.

McKay's knees ached a little, crammed the way they were between John's thighs and the chair, his back twinged a little at the taugh bow he made it confrom to but he didn't care.

John looked up at him and for a brief moment his eyes were dark with fear and worry, Rodney kissed him, slow and deep and desperate and John kissed back, just as desperate, just as frightened.

Quarks, Quantum Chromodynamics and Other Unproven Theories

god, how i adore this fic. i can't articulate it quite right, but there's something about [Bad username or site: amireal / @ livejournal.com]'s fics in general, and this fic in particular, that manages to capture a tenderness and affection between john and rodney that few other fics do. it's like the emotion just grabs you from the page.

I am so sorry your dental thing is still all hurty.

On the other hand, I am so pleased with all these Jenn's comfort fic recs - I am all set now to (re)read myself into a coma. Stories/series by [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek ... [livejournal.com profile] amireal ... [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches ... [livejournal.com profile] likethekoschka ... [livejournal.com profile] ltlj ... [livejournal.com profile] seperis ... [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine ... *squee* It's just like, a list of some of the best stuff ever.

And your reasons why these stories need to be re-re-re-read for their goodness is - it - I'm all in a frenzy now, I can't decide which one to reread first! Thank you for sharing this list. *bounce*

Oh, and your list of WIPs has me all hyper from excitement. ::eyes IM program and makes plans for tomorrow night/the future::
