Work

I'm doomed to a month of Saturday workdays. Currently, I'm somewhere in the range of forty hours of overtime and twenty hours of comp and forty something of annual.

In other words, I could theorietically take off a month.

*grins* Coolness, no?

One of the others has one hundred something hours of overtime. Another one has two hundred something. I'm still minor league here.

Oh. Okay, this may bore everyone, but jump behind the cut tag real quick? Got a question.

Entertainment Weekly had an article on Alias fanfic. Okay, a blurb, in the normal line of them, but it amused me and made me think of [livejournal.com profile] celli. Issue 726, September 5, 2003, if you haven't seen it already, page 41.

Does it look too--bare? I was thinking of adding a picture or something to the top, but on the other hand, it really loads slow enough, so not so sure.

The nice thing about this is that my war with LJ code has actually helped me figure out the hieroglyphs. Okay, not well, but at least now I can see what on earht I'm doing.

Still can't figure out why time is bolded, though.

Okay. Today I will write. I will write something interesting.

svwip: the yard, 6

The world? Is a mighty marvelous place, methinks.

The Yard, part 6 )
T-ball, second practice yesterday. On Sunday, first one, recognized one of the coaches as a guy I went to school with, two years my senior.

He's married. With three daughters.

What. The. Hell.

I'm telling you, it's the normal things that screw around with my head the most. I can deal with growing up myself, because I'm in complete denial about the fact and like it muchly. But someone who used to SCARE me in high school? Not so much. Grrr. My sister couldn't help but remark on his tan and his ass. I'm thinking, is he going to make fun of my hair?

Yep, that's me, all kinds of piles of strangeness.

In more interesting news, child is definitely a lefty. This despite the fact that he writes with his right hand at school (I suspect he's been trained that direction, since his handwriting is still pretty bad even for his age, while his left hand is still better but he acts confused using it). As an aside, it IS funny--since Child learned to draw, he's tended to use both, changing hands as one of them tires. Practical kid. But he's almost always shown a decided preference for physical activity on the left side--throwing, catching, etc.

Anyway, my sister's fiance, who DOES play baseball, was the first to note that while Child threw with his left hand best, he tended to bat from either side, but backwards--using a leftie position on the right side, and a rightie on the left. Sort of. SisterFiance thinks that part of that is observation--everyone he knows and has met and played with is right handed, so he's trying to model. It's cute. I understand this could slow him down should he pursue a professional career, but well. Cute.

Teeth hurt. Want dentist. Seriously overworked, as one of us is on vacation and another is in training. Scary numbers of people with smart questions, but several with really, really, really stupid ones. Want my mommy and a pony. Would settle for someone who loves me to write me porn.

The Yard is progressing. Unlike before, I'm plotting first because my margin of error is very, very small, and well. I'm not good at plot. It's not my natural forte. Romance, sex, love, death, that sort of thing, yay! But worldbuilding? Huh. Anyway, my apologies for being weird. I'll direct you to cool people who are not weird and who are brilliant to entertain you.

[livejournal.com profile] box_of_serial by Livia, where lives Altville, updated regularly. Oh yummy.

Okay. So. Blitzing. Sort of.

Far From Now, posted last week here, final version. Chloe/Clark. Very strange.

Somewhere I Have Never Traveled. Should be final version. Will be uploading to the SSA tomorrow. I was going to do everything tonight, but--wow, Somewhere is rather large. And fought me. Some changes, some consistency errors fixed, some spelling errors fixed, some continuity stuff adjusted. Frankly, if this is still readable, consider it a miracle and a testament to Ann's patience, and if it's not, that's because I lost the ability to edit it any further. I just couldn't manage it.

Gladly Beyond. Yes, and this is how it happened. I said in February, I'm bored! Beth, being unsympathetic, says, oh, you'll be writing a new novel by tomorrow. The scary thing is, she was right.

Anyway.

Pru, Caro, MHC, Bethy, Pearl-o, and everyone else who did the prereads, thank you. Ann and RivkaT, thanks for the beta help.

Now, to think of something that has nothing to do with this. Except Rising. Because Lex is getting fixed whether he's on board with it or not.

Per usual, feedback is adored, because, well, I'm just weird like that. *g*

Recs

Lowell County Choppers by roses. You know, it IS humorous and IS funny and IS cute, but the edge of bittersweet loss of possibility hurt, too. Beautifully written, as always by this author. *sighs*

A Step to the Left by shinan. Hmm. The thing is, while I like it, it NEEDS more. More--context, more background, more explanation of the AU possibility this is. I love the idea, and the writing is sound, so definitely should be read--but I'd love to see this author tell us more about this. Intersting.

Inversion by Lenore. Oh how cool! Reverse AUness, Alex Kent and Clark Luthor. Spooky couple of kids in so many ways. An interesting AU she should definitely revisit.

Other Things

Got this in my LJ, posted to the entry regarding video theft. For those following along in LJ, [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer discovered another idiot doing the theft of video thing. Because fandom is made of a lot of great people and then there are the morons who I would ban from fandom for all time.

See, this is when I want magical powers, dammit.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] jainieg is spearheading Access Denied.

The site is for people who have had their work and/or their bandwidth stolen by thoughtless thieves. At the heart of the site, it's a project to cut the stealing off at the source: by systematically shutting all of the participating AD sites down for 24 hours on May 19. What better way to hammer home the point about fans stealing from other fans by having the fans shut down their sites. Because we don't have to do what we do - we don't have to provide screencaps, we don't have to post our vids and art so that everyone can see them. This is an opportunity to show the thieves just how empty and dull the 'net would be without all of our contributions to the fannish community.

[livejournal.com profile] bonibaru already mentioned it, but let's get this across fandom. Mark the date on your calendars.

If I had slightly more energy, I'd probably throw the most boring fit in creation, but I just don't. I don't get the attitude and I don't get how any sane person can think this is okay. And talking to stupid brick walls, while a way to pass the time, just doesnt' make my top ten list of Things to Do. Removing my toenails with pliers ranks higher at this point.

Places to Visit

Here, [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen explains WHY stealing fan stuff is wrong, wrong, wrong.

[livejournal.com profile] selling_out is the new home of Jessica's wonderful indie!Clark AU. And if you don't know what this is, you NEED to check it out.

And I have GOT to think of something to write that won't annoy me.

Edited to correct title, because I'm a moron

Another Rec Redux, since this will remind me to add it to my webpage. I have GOT to organize my entries soon so I can find these things when I need them.

Breathing Amber by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy.

It's one of the most chilling stories I've read in any fandom. There's a slow start, this beautiful town, the lovely Lana, and the faintest sense of unease that grows slowly through the story. A strangely sick feeling of not-change, and you really don't get it until the end.

For a characterization of first season Lana, it's marvelous. The girl who wants everything to remain the same--her friends, her hometown, her life. And Smallville becomes just that--a huge, unliving monument to a world that should be gone, all held by the power of her need and one man's determination.

Frankly, in all its subtlety, it's one of the most powerful stories I've ever read, and it creeps me out EVERY time.

Other Things

I need more hours in the day.

Still reorganizing memories page and adding as I find them. I cannot find the long entry I did on Ruat Caelum or Everything's Eventual here, though I think I missed the latter just skimming.

Anyway. Ficletness. Kind of--meandering. I know where I'm going, but not entirely how to get there, if that makes any sense at all. Or maybe this will be a huge collection of loosely related episode codas.

Spoilers for Rush.

  • Obi-Wan has a sort of desperate, pathetic patience in this movie. You can just see it in his eyes: "My padawan is a psychopath, and no one will believe me; I'm barely keeping him under control and expect to wake up any night now to find him standing over my bed with a knife!"

  • Beth: god, why do i have so many beads?
Jenn: Because you are an addict.
Jenn: There are twelve step programs for this.
Beth: i dunno they'd work, might have to go straight for the electroshock.
Jenn: I'm not sure that helps with bead addiction.
Beth: i was thinking more to demagnitize my credit card.

silverkyst: though, as a sidenote, I did learn how to eviscerate a fruit fly larvae by pulling it's mouth out by it's mouthparts today.
silverkyst: I'm just nowhere near competent in the subject material to be taking it.
Jenn: I'd like to thank you for that image.

  • You know, if obi-wan had just disciplined the boy *properly* we wouldn't be having these problems. Can't you just see yoda? "Take him in hand, you must. The true Force, you must show him."
