Here is an unanticipated problem with the To-Do list that I'm using my Talk:Seperis page for. Apparently, having a place to leave myself notes on who to add (again, I remember associatively, so while adding to Trekiverse, say, I'll suddenly remember RIGHT XYZ DID THAT THING THEN) and it used to be I'd do it OMG RIGHT NOW or you know, forget.

Here's what I didn't know about 'forgetting'--this is a defense mechanism your brain uses to keep you from snapping and declaring yourself dictator for life of jennland (and various territories). A To-Do list, while really awesome, also has its drawbacks. Now if I don't do it immediately, i add it here to do later. I must be forgetting about eighty percent of everything I wanted to remember, because since starting it, it has not exactly done what sane people would call shrinking.

Link for the morbidly curious.

You will notice, to inspire myself, I split it between Completed, In Progress, and To Add. Strangely, that was far less inspiring than anticipated.

Going to go try to blink slowly and work out how I got to this point in my life.

Around LJ

Because my flist this morning was killing me.

[livejournal.com profile] mrshamill did not kill her boss, [livejournal.com profile] glitterlube finds meaning in shark alternate sexuality and reproduction, and [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn abandoned me to die alone. Due to this, [livejournal.com profile] amireal and [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic have moved up in my will and get to inherit Child and all his game stations and various books on robotics, reptiles, and human cloning. Good luck with that!
I am hungry. This is not particularly interesting in itself, which is why there will be somewhat more to this entry than merely that. I would say the thrill of fanloreing is gone, but sadly, no, it's not, when I found myself plumbing the dark and dangerous depths of google groups to locate a particular FAQ post made in alt.startrek.creative prior to 1999.

Normally, I would admit it was crazy and think it's funny. But no, this is deathly serious because I do not know if I can go on if I don't know exactly when the archive changed to Trekiverse and who staffed ASCA mod positions from founding until 2002.

So that was more than me saying I am hungry, no?

You know, I know there was something else I used to do in fandom. I know it.

(Also, still bracing myself to read House of Leaves. I've had it for months, and in all ways it still freaks me out. I can't even explain why. It just is.)

quick postscript

Postscript to the last entry.

For anyone who was in Star Trek, especially the newsgroups and the earlier mailing lists, I'm keeping a running tab of the people I've added here. Enough of you were on the usenet and lists to remember and flesh out my explanations--if you can, please do so. I'm going to theoretically aim for five people a day from the Trek Meet and Greet list, which take that one with a grain of salt, to at least get the grounding of what I remember, but honestly, a lot are just names I knew, not necessarily interacted with, and their entries need fleshing.

Especially needed is more on Macedon, Peggy Robinson, and Talking Stick/Circle, please, along with the PTFever members and ASC members who came and went. And more on the history of Trekiverse woulnd't hurt either; I was only on the archive committee for about a year or so and I need to review my email to remember what I was doing there other than helping with the voting process.

recording history

There is a part of me that wants to make a project of listing everyone here in fanlore. I have done--five. There are five million. Give or take. Just for Trek.

Dear God.

Hmm

See, the thing is, the wiki is a lot of things to many people, but it's, for me, a living memory. Which is--awesome and breathtaking and how I'm doing some of the user pages probably wont' make sense and will be erased by someone else, but I remember associatively, so I did a lot of interconnect between people and people, people and lists, people and places, which I'm not entirely sure is what the wiki wants to be. I guess it's sort of a fannish interconnection thing I'm expressing through multilinkage, that you can't really know a fandom unless you know the people, and you can't know the people unless you know who they hung out with.

I'm not sure, in other words, that I'm doing it right. I just don't want anyone forgotten. Inevitably, people will be, I suppose, but it can't hurt to try and remember and record as many as I can. I've been going back through the link above and my folders of list email eventually wil be pulled out to see people I missed and what they did, and what they wrote, and their lists and their communities and their cowriters. I listed out everyone I cowrote with on my user page so I can go back and add them in and I'm trying to remember all my betas ever which should be a hell of a lot easier, but I'm a packrat, not necessarily all that well organized.

At least I can honestly say I now have something to do when I'm bored.

H:LotS

Homicide seasons one and two abruptly went down in price and of course, that requires buying it. As one does when DVD sets go on sale.

I feel this could assist in keeping me from abruptly googling when the first Five Things challenge occurred, as I spent part of last night working out it was prior to March 2003.

God, this show is good.
I am having a crisis of fan glossary organization and Fanlore chat is closed!

I have never, in my life, felt as geeky as I did when I was writing up glossary definitions and realized that I didn't think the seealso field really fit the way I wanted to relate various terminologies in fanfiction subgenres with a suffix using -fic.

I was wrong. Reading the sentence above--yes. That makes me feel much geekier.

*stares at chat* I need answers! I may also need an intervention.
Okay, I would kill for Fanlore to be a little more clear on where to ask what kind of questions. No, I have no clue how they'd do it either; I love the talk pages. Just sometimes, I'm not sure which talk page to use.

Anyway, for those playing Whee Wiki (my drug, it is fanlore), question. I figured out how to create a template to insert Accessed Date Here, but is there something that you can use to insert date already somewhere? It's for the external links or reference links last accessed thing. Yes, I tried the triple tilde mentioned on wikipedia.

Things Accomplished

1.) Added common categories to Template:ArchiveProfile, Template:FanProfile, and Template:CommunityProfile. So now if someone uses the template, they don't have to manually add unless they need to sort (such as, by last name or not by "The" or "A", etc). This pleases me, as I am lazy and having it done automatically when I use the template is happiness. Also, if there are subcategories created for say, Archives or something, then I can just add it there and boom, all the pages using that template get it.

It's like Christmas, really.

2.) Added more people. Yay! There is dancing involved.

3.) Added a page for [livejournal.com profile] sv_inquiry, Dead Letters Challenge, [livejournal.com profile] overheardfandom, and several archives.

4.) Did not figure out how to add a second extended CommunityProfile template yet to a page. It throws the whole page off, but I don't want to dramatically change the original template, as that way leads to a.) unhappy people who already used it and have to go back and edit or b.) I have to go back and hand edit the changes in to the entries that are using them and they may not want the extension. I'd go with divs, but that's really customizing it and I want these really easy to use as I am lazy and like to cut/paste quickly.

Remember to come join and add your bit! The Stargate: Atlantis pages and character subpages are awesome. [livejournal.com profile] apple_pi, [livejournal.com profile] ratcreature, [livejournal.com profile] anatsuno, [livejournal.com profile] lcsbanana, and okay, a ton of other people are doing a fantastic job filling it in.

I feel like I'm forgetting something obvious.

ETA: On my user profile, I added quick links to some of the most commonly used templates with short explanations. You can find them here. This explanation is not official--I am not on the wiki committee--but what has worked for me. YMMV.
I know there's something I'm supposed to be doing other than editiing FanLore....

Right.

DVD Commentary Challenge

We're up to the wire now. Plz to be getting your commentaries in. You have all of today. Go at it! Go to [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary whenever you are ready.
Last one, I promise. Today.

I have added templates! I have mastered wikilanguage! Or just, you know, learned the art of copy/paste. Added Template:ArchiveProfile and Template:UsenetProfile, which are basically just extensions of Template:Site with a couple of added lines specifically for archives and usenet newsgroups. Because I am having a really fantastic time.

Crack, crack, crack, crack, crack. Also, check out the SGA page and the link to the Sheppard page. It. Is. Awesome.
I have a very strong feeling that a template for mailing lists pages and a template for archive pages are desperately needed.

*chews lip* This is going to be del.icio.us all over again, isn't it?

ETA: Did I mention the page is here and there need to be more new pages now? *hopeful*
Protip to Self: Obsessively clicking Fanlore: Recent Changes does not, in fact, speed up people adding more pages. You are just crazy.

*clicks refresh*

*clicks again*
DVD Commentary Fanlore Page - am I doing these citations correctly? If I am not, help? Are they supposed to be citations or footnotes. Why is this so complicated?

Dear God, I am having flashbacks to ENG II so hard. Any corrections, go in and for the love of God correct it.
Carefully peering out to check for more Dow crashes. Suddenly, the story about the sky falling makes so very much sense.

Accomplishments

I wrote fic about a dangerously incompetent cat-nabbing ring.

I read Prison Break fic and try to keep some kind of sanity in the face of OMG HOT.

Much More Interesting Stuff

Oh! Fanlore Wiki is open!

Now, you, too, can document fannish history in wiki form. Which is actually weirdly fun, since me and [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur emailed back and forth saying things like "Wait, when did DVD commentaries in general start?" and "Are you sure 2005?" and "OOho, but I saw one earlier I think!" So we can cite. Because this is happiness.

Um. Go, play, remember embarrassing things about fannish history to add. You totally know you want to!

And Last Stuff

2008 DVD Commentary Challenge closes at 11:59 PM tomorrow. You have all today and all tomorrow.

Now, this is where I also say, if you have started already and you know you are going to be delayed, email me or Jin ASAP. This is for indexing purposes--we don't shut down the community between challenge dates, but we don't like, check it either for indexing all that often. You can leave it here or in the latest entry at the community, but please do tell us. That way we'll both know to go look at it and add it to the master list.

And that's it for now. If today is like yesterday, perhaps we will have more Portraits of Stockbrokers in Distress.
