So I feel like I have taken some kind of weird four-steps-back thing in my fannish reading where I am using delicious for my reading needs, since it's faster than waiting for someone to fucking rec to me already and spare me pain.

(It's a sign of my current reading I keep wanting to throw out bloody for no reason, just out of context randomly, because I seriously love how it sounds. This is especially hysterical taking into account two Australian cousins who are having giggling fits every forty-five seconds or so and have no idea why. Okay, it's hysterical to me, and it involves stories of my childhood that would take years to relate, but suffice to say, it's really quite funny in my head. You really need to just trust me on this one and laugh politely. Thanks.)

Anyway, I was speaking of--right, the New and Terrifying Rec Machine that is delicious.

This is like Trekiverse all over again. I might get a summary. Probably not a good one (considering my summaries when I tag are something like "neat" and "disturbing", I still feel comfortable in judging this). Usually get a pairing. . Sometimes, get a bit more. Usually don't. Usually, I look at the number of times it's been tagged and think, ah, this must be readable.

Oh hell no. Tags lie.

I'm tempted to make a list but honestly, I love you all and that is why I feel you should fall over your own ass thinking you are going to read something about a forest or a desert or a something and get hit with like, knee-fetishes and the inappropriate use of mammals.

If I had been warned, I wouldn't have read this, and see explanation below.

Crossdressing is not my particular kink. Very much take it or leave it and leave some money on the dresser after you leave. But it's--you know, let me try it this way. I have read fic I hated and fic I liked and fic I went eh on and fic I tried to marry (and authors I sometimes stalk in my very subtle way). This is the first one I've read about six times now, both in order and out of order, and then from end to beginning (yes, I actually did). I have no idea what I think of it, to be honest. Basically, I'm reccing this one on the strength of my original WTF reaction because I accidentally started in chapter five and that's why it ended up with multiple re-reads, because I was just that confused. I've never actually believed that the sins of my nineteen year old self and that terribly interesting night tripping acid outside my best friend's not-boyfriend's dorm would come back to haunt me, but this story kind of convinced me it had for at least four chapters.

doomcanary, Merlin/Arthur, Merlin/Other (sort of?), crossdressing, D/s (sort of? I'm not kidding, acid flashback), other assorted flavors of hmm. Multiple time periods. Yes, you will get used to it, but it still feels odd for a bit.

I will say, no matter what, get to the bacchanalia.

It's a stunning piece of fanfiction, though I have to admit the premise is too much of a departure from the characters I see to really capture me. I found that I didn't understand some of the motivations that drove Merlin, and that some of Arthur's earlier reactions seemed almost too callous. I think part of the problem for me personally is that I do not, on an emotional level, get the fetishization of clothing.

But it is an interesting, fascinating story for all that. Even if I spent most of my time reading it quite confused and a little left out.

This. It's way off canon, but it's utterly fascinating. And yeah, a feeling I'm missing a huge chunk of the story.

Sooooooooooo. Merlin's that good? 'Cause I am sort of weirded out that Merlin and Arthur look young enough to me at least my nephews, if not my sons. If I had, you know, children that were not cats.

And therefore have looked askance at said fandom.

I wasn't a big Connor/Anybody fan either.

Well, if you're seeking Merlin recs, I've tagged about 60 of them here (http://delicious.com/lwdagreat/Merlin) that I really liked. I've summarized them as well, but I tend to do so tongue-in-cheek or for my own personal recall so I don't know how helpful that is or whether you've read all these or what. But there they are.

Which reminds me as you'll see Summer Country on that list - I keep meaning to be a better feedbacker, but seem to have some sort of mental block or something. So I'll just stick this in totally the wrong place so I don't forget to do it. I really loved it - Arthur as both his sweet/prattish self and as the land itself, Merlin contemplating confessing to be a sorcerer to escape the heat and confused about whether Arthur's possessed or not. It read as both a great Merlin canon story and a medieval myth and I just really loved it. :)

As D/s goes it's pretty mild compared to what I've read and more subtextual than textual (though there are implications, yes). It was only strong enough for me to note later in the story. Honestly, unless you are super sensitive to *any* power dynamic shift of any kind, it's probably at the same level of pretty much any slash story, but with a slight hint of more formality. I wouldn't have even bothered if not for literally two scenes that made me decide to go ahead and add.

Cool, that doesn't sound like what I'm worried about at all. I'll check it out!

If you need warning, I can tell you which chapters, but again, it's more formality than scene, if that makes sense, and honestly, when you get there, you will see what I mean about how its set up. This is not, if you know Xanthe, at her level of twenty-four/seven at all.

Yeah, my concern mostly extends to major headspace stuff, things where the line of consent gets blurry or there's much sublimation of self. As I recall, I had to sit Xanthe's out entirely.

No, not even close to that level. Also, Arthur and Morgana duel over Merlin at the bacchanalia, and for that alone, I'd rec this. Seriously, it's freaking *fun*. *g*

I have this WIP I will probably never continue on where Morgana and Arthur swaps bodies. It fell apart really quickly because writing Morgana's part was so much fun (she was having a blast), but Arthur was not working quite so well.

I don't know. Arthur's unearthly fascination with breasts would drive everyone nuts. And Morgana's horror at the fact he likes necklines even lower than hers.

I think the fundamental problem with me trying to write this is that I suck at funny, so you mostly get angst (with an interlude of Morgana-as-Arthur chasing Gwen around the room laughing and Merlin walking in on them kissing). I should work on that.

Back in Merlin's hometown, they go the arranged marriage way of things, and Merlin's betrothed comes of age and comes to collect her husband. JEALOUS ARTHUR.

*falls over laughing* I have a special fantasy fic idea where Arthur is betrothed to someone so much more irritating than he is and Merlin keeps trying to resign and Arthur is like I will not be abandoned to live like this. And it is very, very funny. In my head anyway.
