this is not a true story
Hypothetically.
Let's say one bought a soldering iron this weekend--being totally hypothetical--and it only works with butane, and say one thinks (or one's immediate family and friends in a three city area) that maybe one needs to get one less--volatile.
...and one's sister refuses to help because of potential for death. Which is not only hypothetical but hypocritical and hey, a little insulting, don't you think?
You know. Should one need another one that isn't powered by small canisters of butane, what would one get?
Hypothetically. With links, if possible.

Wish I could say I've used a particular brand myself but the one I tried once was electric ?

From:Fits in tool box and can go anywhere.
Separate light allows for easy visual inspection.
Great for on-the-spot small jobs.
Handles up to 18-20 gauge solder wire.
Sharp point allows for detail work.
Flat face provides greater heat transfer.
50° Angle Bevel Tip Applications
You know ... just sayin ... hypothetically and all ... :D

From:It was this one: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=21766 (I'm at work and don't have the patience to do an a-ref). It's an excellent kit and has stood me in very good stead. I bought my own stand (with sponge) for the soldering iron.
You do know how to solder, right? It's not easy, you know. My FIL (the retired engineer) taught me and it took me a long time before I could lay a neat, fine line.

From:Solder and desolder of modern electrical kit is very very small and very very fiddly, we did the bare minimum by hand, most small components are laid by machine now. Desoldering often destroys components, desolder braid is essential. You need to know if the solder is leaded or lead free, as this will dictate the heat of the tip when melting solder.
I would strongly caution against going anywhere near any important computer based circuit boards until you have practiced a great deal, both soldering and desoldering, as on modern boards many components will not have markings, and will prove very difficult to replace if destroyed.

From:I would get a Weller: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Description=weller&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20
Be sure to get a precision tip for computer work.
It's good to have a multimeter and a magnifying glass nearby, too.

From:Here is a URL for the cold solder tool. It goes to an "as seen on TV" page, but that's better than a dead link any day.
