Hypothetically.

Let's say one bought a soldering iron this weekend--being totally hypothetical--and it only works with butane, and say one thinks (or one's immediate family and friends in a three city area) that maybe one needs to get one less--volatile.

...and one's sister refuses to help because of potential for death. Which is not only hypothetical but hypocritical and hey, a little insulting, don't you think?

You know. Should one need another one that isn't powered by small canisters of butane, what would one get?

Hypothetically. With links, if possible.

ELFA has several good electrical ones. Except if they sell in US as well i don't know. They're big all over Europe though.

https://www1.elfa.se/elfa3~ex_en/b2b/init.do?shop=ELFA_EX-EN#toc=19644;

Wish I could say I've used a particular brand myself but the one I tried once was electric ?

Fits in tool box and can go anywhere.
Separate light allows for easy visual inspection.
Great for on-the-spot small jobs.
Handles up to 18-20 gauge solder wire.
Sharp point allows for detail work.
Flat face provides greater heat transfer.

Why would a Butane one be especially volatile if handled appropriately? I mean I only know them as household items as burners for food and in a camping cooker. Are soldering irons much different? (Beyond being, you know, soldering irons, which wouldn't change even if it was electrical.)

Mine is electric and fine tipped. It's designed to be used on computer equipment. Nextag carries them, and I think Newegg might as well. It came with my Belkin computer tool kit, which I ordered online. Actually, Microcenter might carry them, and they're online as well.

Don't get a butane one, please? I'd never forgive myself if you burned down your house.

Why do I get this awful feeling that I'm enabling you?

It was this one: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=21766 (I'm at work and don't have the patience to do an a-ref). It's an excellent kit and has stood me in very good stead. I bought my own stand (with sponge) for the soldering iron.

You do know how to solder, right? It's not easy, you know. My FIL (the retired engineer) taught me and it took me a long time before I could lay a neat, fine line.

I worked in electronics assembly for a decade. We used electric solder and desolder equipment, mainly Pace and Metcal (which have removable interchangeable precision tips).

Solder and desolder of modern electrical kit is very very small and very very fiddly, we did the bare minimum by hand, most small components are laid by machine now. Desoldering often destroys components, desolder braid is essential. You need to know if the solder is leaded or lead free, as this will dictate the heat of the tip when melting solder.

I would strongly caution against going anywhere near any important computer based circuit boards until you have practiced a great deal, both soldering and desoldering, as on modern boards many components will not have markings, and will prove very difficult to replace if destroyed.

I like butane because there's no wire to get tangled up in, but YMMV.

I would get a Weller: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Description=weller&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

Be sure to get a precision tip for computer work.

It's good to have a multimeter and a magnifying glass nearby, too.

Hypothetically speaking, all of the soldering irons one may have used in one's own life have been electric, either little ones (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AS28UC?tag=savechea-20) or big ones (http://josephjenkins.com/store/electric-solder-irons/).

My hypothetical experience has always been with electric ones. Butane brings to mind melting a sugar crust on top of creme brulee and I don't think that would be a desirable outcome for electronics. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

My hypothetical response would be hypothetically bust out the hypothetical butane soldering iron and remember to use hypothetical care on your hypothetical project. All the soldering irons I've ever used have been butane powered and as one who once had a shop class teacher actually weep over one of my projects (and not with joy, mind you), I think you'll be okay. Having never been in a environment that used butane (because such a scenario would have resulted in this one picking chunks of others out of her hair, given what some of those idiots did), electric soldering irons are perfectly safe, inasmuch as a metal-melting device can be. This one recommends one with a secure stand or rest (http://www.google.com/products?q=electric+soldering+iron+rest+OR+stand&hl=en&aq=f), given how easy it is to put the thing down, have one's partner jostle the cord, and end up setting fire to an instruction manual. Not that such a thing ever happened, of course.

From: [identity profile] lurkerlynne.livejournal.com Date: 2010-06-02 05:03 am (UTC)
Honestly? It's not the thought of you with a butane soldering iron that's frightening me; it's the thought of you with a soldering iron, period. Hypothetical or not, the carnage will be awesome.

From: [identity profile] lurkerlynne.livejournal.com Date: 2010-06-02 05:09 am (UTC)
Also, one should go with cold heat, yes. Not because grabbing a soldering iron by the wrong end causes interesting scars, but that it cuts down on the urge to start drawing on the nearest (and not so near) wooden surface with one's soldering iron.
