yeah, I think so.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G Tablet

Whoo-boy.

Adding: Kindle ebook reader also upgrading, though I wonder about the white background. I am kind of partial to the grey.

Ugh, I seriously HAZ a SAD, b/c I have last year's kindle, and the directly lighting thingy is... amazing. Also, TOUCH SCREEN. Jesus, that would make navigating on the AO3 so much easier. I am about to be every more of a luddite, and I'm frustrated.

I love my Fire in every single way except for being endlessly annoyed by them not actually updating the actual READER part of it and giving native collections on it. So my soul really wants to covet the new Fires, but my soul is still busy being pissy they haven't fixed that one thing that, yanno, the OLD ONES still have.

I mean I found an app to do collections with, but it's not the same as native application.

I've been scanning the news, but haven't seen any actual upgrades to the reading app to include collections, have you spotted anything about that?

I almost lost my Fire while camping. Now I'm kind of wishing I had, so I had a justification for replacing it.

(Unfortunately for my pocket book, I'll be replacing my main laptop next month, as the product on which I work, which shall remain nameless for nearly-plausible deniability, hits general availability, so justifying the new Kindles becomes harder. Except the Paperwhite. I have misplaced my Touch. Clearly, this means I need to replace it. Yes. Even though I misplaced it in the house. And will no doubt find it when I clean up.)

I'm upgrading for one big reason: bluetooth support. I can hook a keyboard to that.

Trying soooo hard to justify buying the 8.9 inch tablets over the 7 inch for the kids for Christmas/plan ride. Not sure I can justify the extra $200 (since I have to buy two)

I got so excited when I saw the paperwhite, but it looks like it has no speakers so no music or audiobooks or text to speech! Now I have to figure out how important the backlighting is to me when I have a perfectly awesome Kindle Touch 3G with a lighted cover already.

I'm trying to find out if the 3G on the new Kindle is like what they put on the touch where it only works for Amazon and Wiki, otherwise you need wifi anyway.

Lol! Such a dilemma!

Did you go with the 3G model on your preorder? Ah! Just got the confirmation from Amazon that the 3G is just like the Touch and would only work for Amazon & wiki. Preordered the wifi version today! So excited! Thanks for posting that the new versions were out!

My Kindle has started locking up more and more frequently -- I don't whether it's using too much memory on my Game of Thrones series reread, or whether all the smallish fic files are causing some sort of indexing overload, or if the damn thing is just wearing out despite having only been bought last Xmas.

Anyway. Not looking forward to the prospect of getting a new one and having to retag everything I've got on the current one when I load it all to a new one. But the old one will wear out and then I'll have to. And I'm charmed by a backlighting feature, since that's the one big thing the phone app has over the physical Kindle -- being able to lie in bed reading in the dark until I fall asleep without risking spending the night sleeping with the lights on because I didn't shut them off and set the Kindle aside in time. (The other big advantage to the phone app is being able to read it with my glasses off, which is damned useful when I'm deliberately reading until I fall asleep and don't want to risk sleeping in my glasses. Don't think I can pull that off with a full-sized Kindle, backlit or not.)

FYI. I don't know if you will agree with them, but it's something to think about.
Good luck!

I think they're saying to wait and buy the new stuff instead of anything currently available.

I'm no good at Kindle/Nook type stuff, so I don't know which are the newer ones. I was just hoping that the article might not be totally useless. Your interpretation sounds pretty good.

According to the review that I found, the Paperwhite only looks white when its light is turned on. When the light's off, the screen is apparently grey, just like the old Kindle.

What you said actualy flipped me to preorder (and even so, the backlog says delivery will be October 17th!). I think I'll probably like the backlight when I get used to it, but I need the nice grey that's easy on my eyes otherwise.

I am almost happy my Kindle keyboard broke now, hate to say it, because I love it like a lot, but God, the backlight, if it's not irritating, seems like such a great idea.

I'm so tempted by both. I already own a kindle, but the new one sounds so good.
An kindle fire looks so good, can you get BBC shows on there? or download pirated shows?

I don't know? I use my Amazon Prime membership a lot mroe than I thought I would, though, since Farscape is free and now Thor and Captain America are. Plus, I can access the movies I buy on it Amazon servers as well.

I very foolishly watched the liveblogs and i am SO TEMPTED by the Paperwhite screen, even though i am married to hardware page turn buttons (Sony don't fail me now! Make the T3 good; too late for the T1 now)

And the fire hd WANTSSSSSS. I 'm sticking to the 7 inch though as the weight really bugs me.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2012-09-09 04:58 am (UTC)
...that is my only compliant. I wans't tempted by the Kindle Touch because I love my Kindle keyboard and manual turning from both sides of the screen (that does irritate me, actually, that with the touches, you can't do it all with one finger from either hand and weirdly, I prefer reading while holding it in my left hand. I really wish they'd left the manual controls at least for page turning.

I hear you get used to the swipey-page-turniness of the KTouch quickly; I admit I didn't give it much of a chance when I bought one. I haaaated the lack of buttons and mourned the loss of my 78 ebook categories. I returned it the next day and bought the Sony T1.

Whenever I see the brilliant Paperwhite screen, I just have to remind myself that my T1 has:
- page turn buttons right where a thumb can reach (one handed reading, yay subway)
- category support, both in calibre AND bulk edit on device, which is frankly a miracle
- format support (and thank you calibre / apprenticealf for the awz3 -> epub conversion)
- page numbers (::eyerolling forever:: Really AMZ? really?)
- SD card (for my headphones/reading music)
- my own screensaver images (my dog, yes I am shallow)

I can live with a slight delay to my reading gratification since any AMZ books need to be de-DRMed for my T1, but eh, there is also a million fanfics so yay!

I am definitely thinking of saving up to upgrade to the Kindle Fire HD. I've had my Kindle Fire for 7 months now and while I absolutely adore it (SO VERY MUCH!) I just had to get a replacement sent (because it stopped charging, due to the shoddy charger port - a lot of other people have the same problem) and I am hoping this has been fixed in the HD.

I also would love more space and the camera option. I've never been one to upgrade to the new thing, because there are always new things and I am still perfectly happy with my Kindle Keyboard. The Fire HD just looks so tempting and I've absolutely loved my experience with Amazon and the Fire.
