*thoughtful* And to think there were times in my life at work where I was bored. Tentatively, I do not have that problem now. Sometimes I dream of spreadsheets, and you know what? I like it. This development is under review for incipient worry that I'm penciling in for real consideration in Julyish. Maybe early September at the latest.

In other news:

CBS casts its Sherlock Holmes and SPOILER ALERT--it's Jonny Lee Miller, which is a problem since I don't feel this interpretation will end well (in New York, even, Christ) but I would watch Miller and find it riveting television if he were watching paint dry, see the problem here? I even watched a truly hideous and terrible Mansfield Park interpretation (we shall never speak of this again) just to see him trotting around in knee breeches. Hence, you can imagine my reaction to the latest Emma (knee-breeches, horse, walking with finely muscled thighs and whatnot) has pretty much left me panting, and I am not one to pant unrequited. Again, I watched that awful Mansfield Park and that's like, one step off rabid-fan territory for me.

In really other news:

If I asked nicely, could someone direct me to The West Wing Josh/Donna fics? Yes, I read Speranza's, and that was like, only a page and hello, fangirl, I need more.

Jonny Lee Miller

From: [personal profile] legionseagle Date: 2012-02-15 03:17 pm (UTC)
I think it's a bit embarrassing, tbh. I saw Miller live on stage as Creature in Frankenstein (and in the reverse casting in the simulcast) and he was great but I think it's a bit - tacky? - casting him as the lead in a modern-day Sherlock which appears to be clinging a bit to the coat-tails of Sherlock in which his co-star and alternate in Frankenstein has made a hit. It's like, "Could they just do something to differentiate this, just a bit?"

It's a bit like that crack about doing things the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce, to be honest. Because Frankenstein really, really worked with Victor and Creature being the two halves of the same whole and the casting playing off that, and this - so much not likely to work that way.

I'm cautiously optimistic about JLM; he looks right and "House" proved, to me at least, that you can graft aspects of Holmes onto another character and...Oh, Hell! It was Hugh Laurie being misanthropic. We'll see. Seriously.

I'm actually far more upset about the New York setting than any of the casting info I've heard. I understand that they want to differentiate it in the details as much as they can without taking away any of the basics, but London is really at the heart of the whole thing, it's the 3rd main character in Sherlock anyway.

The only way I'd be interested is if they went with one of the dream castings I've seen manips of on tumblr (or something similar), which were: Jasika Nicole/John Cho and John Cho/Karl Penn for Holmes/Watson (both times in that order). You know do something actually DIFFERENT.

In response to the second part of your post, I've bookmarked 5 non-Speranza Josh/Donna fics (which is way too few, but alas, fandom didn't do its best for this pairing, I tell you what):

Coffee by krabapple, Season 7 compliant, where Josh & Donna, both on the road for their candidates, run into each other in a diner late at night. Lovely.

Necessary by [profile] little_zigzags: snapshots of their life together, post-canon, Donna POV. Gorg.

Five Women Who Told Josh To Keep His Hands Off Donna for the fat lot of good that did. By [personal profile] pocky_slash.

Sittin' In Committee by carleton97. Donna fails to rescue Josh from having to wrangle 4th-graders, and then they have completely unstoppable sex in a supply closet. Bantery goodness.

Sparks by [profile] jo_march. In which Donna realizes it will never work out with Jack because they've given each other ungodly boring Christmas presents.

Also, um, I wrote one? Back in the day when I used to write fanfic. Up against the wall porn: Sailing Off To A Warmer Country.

I saw that CBS announcement and thought: CBS? They're like Civil War surgeons! Oh, the butchering! I would bet cash money they make Holmes and Watson yanks and set it in LA or some other genius twist. What. Ev.

CBS is geared towards an audience that seems menopausal and curmudgeonly in an uninteresting way; folks who don't like to be startled by violence or boobies popping out or a thinky plot. These coots just want something familiar or hokey to watch whilst tucked into their his/hers Snuggies on the La-Z-Boy at night. Or at least that how I explain their programming to myself.

So I fear for any project CBS tackles since I can only assume it will be blandified to suit such viewers. Abandon all hope ye who enter here, etc.

THE QUESTION WE ARE ALL ASKING.

From: [identity profile] nimnod.livejournal.com Date: 2012-02-16 09:13 am (UTC)
We need MOAR SHERLOCK. Not duplicate Sherlock. It's like they got fans lots of fans lots of fans lots of fans, with the power to make their own show. Can you imagine being able to make your own show, not just on paper? When the urge to write a fic strikes you can just go no, I know what, let's film it. With sets and characters and all that. Then we can make people watch it and get our own fans and omg we can be BNFS!

But Jonny Lee Miller is FRIENDS with Benedict Cumberbatch. Perhaps it's all part of an elaborate plan to derail the American remake before it even begins? (And if Sherlock is supposed to be American in this, why would you hire someone British? Is he supposed to just be Regular British Sherlock in New York? How is that better?)

Also, please to stop BEING IN MY HEAD. For no apparent reason this morning, as I was unlocking my office door this morning, the phrase "I caaaaahn't get out" popped into my head and now I think it was your fault. (I have a complex relationship with that Mansfield Park, too.)

GOD I KNOW. I was going through the same cycle of denial-hope-utter-despair.

*hands* Mansfield Park is not like, easy to love, so complex is a word for it. It's just, like, no one should touch it without a healthy understanding of satire or a deep and meaningful relationship with alcohol to get through it.

I kind of expect the worst from the CBS version for the sole reason that I'm pretty sure they'll change either Watson or Lestrate into a female character. They have to be "different", and that's the easiest way to do it.

I am all for strong female characters, but no...not this.

Of course, it could still be I'm totally wrong. But I don't think so.

I'd LOVE a female Holmes (and the Watson can be male or female), but making Watson female while keeping Holes a white male dude? Reinforces ALL the ideas about Watson being Holmes inferior and then they can have ROMANCE!!! (because it's NOT GAY; SEEE; NO ICK!!!)

Reinforces both the superior/inferior man/woman and logic (masculine)/emotion (feminine) AND the implicit change of Watson (not Holmes!) to female for the sake of getting romance into Sherlock. It's like a goddamn fail trifecta just in concept.

I trawled YouTube for a Very Long Time to collect all the relevant snippets of 'Smith' - Jeff and Tom needed their own series, for real. A f*cked-up bromance at it's very best. But 'Plunkett and Macleane' is my go-to for serious costume porn. I wiped MP from my mind, I think, but Emma, yeah...

I don't think there is any excuse for whatever CBS think they are doing - why the heck do they feel the need?

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2012-02-15 05:44 pm (UTC)

America already had it's best version of the Sherlock series years before it existed with Zero Effect (even if that film was influenced by Nero Wolfe).

I think an Americanized version should star an American. This is less nationalism as the recent pattern of the more Holmes-like a main character, the more likely it's a British actor: House, Life, Lie To Me, The Mentalist.

Oh dear god, that Mansfield Park. I have ~~feelings about MP in general, especially in relation to P&P and Persuasion and Jane Austen's life, but I have especially complex feelings about that production. Also, Jonny Lee Miller always seems to play the male protagonists of Austen's that I don't really like, and tries to make me like them by being Jonny Lee Miller.

From: [identity profile] archaeologist-d.livejournal.com Date: 2012-02-18 01:53 pm (UTC)
They really should leave Holmes alone and let the Sherlock people do the great job that they are doing. Sigh. I'll probably watch the first episode but it will have to be brilliant if they want me to keep watching.
