meta and music

Part A

Is Grumpy Old Fic Queen by zvi on DW, in which Zvi speaks on original fic in slash archives and kind of encapsulates the awesome that is fanfiction:
I like fanfiction because it is fanfiction. Because, even if someone fails to get across in their 374 word meditation on how the light falls in character X's hair, I can go to Wikipedia and discover (a) why anyone in the world gives a damn about character X and (b) by hair the author meant swirling id vortex about to swallow all of existence, unless character C does something about it.

The rest of the entry is about original fic in fanfiction archives and makes some good points about why that's odd. I've never had any strong feelings either way, but I agree with why she doesn't care for it. I mean, I read a lot of fanfiction, but I also read a lot of fiction that is not fanfiction (or pretends it's not fanfiction, which always amuses me in a variety of ways). They are different in what expectations I bring to them (my standards for loving professional work have changed dramatically), and not just because of the word derivative being involved either; this is the only place that it's perfectly acceptable to write second person pov future perfect and people that don't have PhD's in literature think it's freaking awesome.

I actually have this entire thing on why fanfiction satisfies the part of me that loves literary risk-taking even when it fails; I might think they did it badly, but I seriously love anyone who sits down, pops out their word processing program of choice, and says, "Let us shuck the bonds of literary convention like whoa. With porn." Baby, go for it. Double second person pov sex with no gerunds in non-chronological order? Bring it.

Part B:

It's that time again; I need new writing music.

After nearly a month of searching, I have seven songs that I keep listening to because I don't actually like them--wait for it!--but I know that I will. I don't know why I will--something will click, basically--but it's the uneasy knowledge that right now they are the equivalent of nails on chalkboard and suddenly one day I will turn them on and they will work. It can take years--I'm serious, I've bought songs on the future expectation I will love them, which is why I have stories written to songs made in like, 1998 or before--but they will and I'll be grateful later.

Recent Examples of Song Bought on Expectation That Became Awesome For No Reason:

Say When, The Fray - second fastest turnover, three weeks. I hated it when I bought the album. Then it came up on rotation and boom. There.
Enough for Now, The Fray - fastest turnover, three hours. I hated it so much I almost removed it from my playlists altogether. Then I got distracted, it came up on rotation, boom. We're done.
Don't Cry Out, Shiny Toy Guns - sixteen days. See above.
In My Head, Jason Derulo - months of listening to it on the radio, hated it, loved his first single. See above.
Hum Hallelujah, Fall Out Boy - ...like, years? I heard it I don't know when and could not get into it. Then I was reading bandslash and turned it on for background music and boom.
I cannot talk about my musical relationship with My Chemical Romance, but let's just say I never had a moment where I doubted myself as much as the horrified realization I couldn't edit fic without it. It works best when in conjunction with Lady Gaga's Paparazzi and any cover of any Cyndi Lauper song. I think the beat and mood change like, does something, IDK.

Recent Acquisitions That Are Not There Yet:

I Don't Want to Be, Gavin DeGraw - I have no idea, but I was listening to the iTunes sample and going, whatever, then the chorus--did something. I don't know what. But there you go.
Closer to You, The Wallflowers - my long-lost ex-roommate lived and died on them and Counting Crows. I was very much not impressed. Then it came up in iTunes Genius and. Yeah. God, I hate this song. And yet. I won't, eventually.
Closer, Ne-Yo - actually, this one has an explanation. It's on Dance Dance Revolution 3 and for some reason, I know it will work for something. I just don't know what yet.
Breakeven, the Script - I heard it on the radio and tried to change the channel, so you know, I went to listen to it again. Basically, if I loathe it the first time I hear it, that's also a good indicator there's something there.
You and Me, Dave Matthews Band - I don't hate this. I like having it on background. I just don't feel anything specific except every once in a while, I hear something and go, oh, that. Then it's gone. Whatever.
I'll Run, The Cab - God. No idea. I just know okay?
Nutshell, Alice in Chains - ....I kind of think the intro is what keeps making me listen grimly.
Also on this list: Tantric, Course of Nature, and Parachute, who I ended up buying the album in a fit of insomnia because there is something there.

*pokes playlist* The Cab thing really is getting to me.

I hate myself for The Cab. I just--stare at it and think, what have I become? I blame Hum Hallelujah; its' like, I got drunk and woke up with like, all the Fall Out Boy albums and Cobra fucking Starship drinking up all my beer and asking for more takeout and it was supposed to be a one night stand but they won't leave.

If I end up with Academy somewhere, I'm not responsible for my actions.

FORGET THE ACADEMY (or at least their latest album & ep), go download their former guitarist's new band's free album howl (and if you like it, tell me and i'll upload you all their other stuff, which unfortunately they got poor enough they had to charge a small amount for). http://music.weareempires.com/album/howl they are amazing, nothing like the pop-punk of fall out boy and the cab and cobra starship, they're on a totally different level and i have yet to show their music to somebody who disliked it

I say 'criteria' which covers 'glomping onto songs, artists or GENRES like an obsessive freak.' For instance, it's best you never never ask me how many Bollywood soundtracks I have..and can sing...

*she said weakly*

And I have to wonder if my eclectic musical habits have to do with my father's methods of 'expose her to as much music as possible'? We spent entire afternoons with him putting on records and me just hanging out listening. Plus, my grandmother singing musicals around me all the time? So I know the words to tons of those too?

And, I know all of Bruce Springsteen's songs out of self defense, because well, THAT is one of my father's moods.

Huh. I can't listen to anything with lyrics while writing, which is why my playlist tends to be populated by things like 'BBC Emma Soundtrack' and 'Atonement Motion Picture Original Blah Blah'.

(And on one memorable occasion, for an ethics class I hated utterly, The Dark Knight.)

On the note of your musical needs, do you like Florence and the Machine or The Bird and the Bee?

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2010-04-04 10:26 pm (UTC)
..I don't know? *worried* They are?

From: [identity profile] hollyxu.livejournal.com Date: 2010-04-04 10:30 pm (UTC)
Blinding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da6bBKLPEGg) is my favourite song from Florence and the Machine, she tends to be indie/electronic.

The Bird and the Bee are an indie pop group that's been around for a while, My Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv3ZdOdjXso) seems to be an all-around favourite.

Hope you like!

I think that this sort of experimental/convention-bending narrative technique goes down a lot better in fanfiction (lord knows, I'll happily read forms and styles in fanfic that I wouldn't give the time of day elsewhere), not least because if it's fanfic, the reader has an anchor. There's only so much weird stuff the brain can process at one time, and with fanfic, you can count on the audience having a certain amount of already-installed knowledge of the world and the characters, so there's more room left over to handle something like, say, an amnesiac unreliable narrator relating events in nonchronological order.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2010-04-04 10:23 pm (UTC)
Ohhh yes; fanfiction has built-in context, so it's a lot easier to get into the rhythm of the unfamiliar.

The unreliable narrator has been done very well in professional fiction, I know, but fanfic for some reason makes it seriously amazing to get into when it's done right.

From: [identity profile] hivesofactivity.livejournal.com Date: 2010-04-05 02:31 am (UTC)
I, too love that passage of yours that malkingrey quoted.

And one of the ways it can work in original fic is, of course, when it's part of a series, which thus brings with it some of the same stated benefits of fanfic. This immediately made me think of one of the books in the Campion detective series by Margery Allingham; it isn't particularly experimental, but it does have totally different feel and a narrator so massively unreliable that it only works properly if you have read the rest and know it fits into that universe.

Pete Wentz' lyrics (when they're comprehensible) are so much like fanfic half the time I don't feel the need to look for bandom slash.

From: [identity profile] eponymousanon.livejournal.com Date: 2010-04-05 12:54 am (UTC)
So... I spent about six months alternating between The Black Parade, Infinity on High and Folie a Deux as my "wake up" music. I can understand your inability to function without MCR. I... surreptitiously obtained? The Cab a while back (after they appeared in a bandslash fic and I was like, whu? who this? lol) and I'll Run is their MOST ANNOYING song for me. I like their cover of I Want to Break Free though (don't judge me). Umm. Let's see. After a FOB concert with 4 (count it, four) openers I went and downloaded two of them legitly-- Hey Monday and All Time Low. Weightless (ATL) is a good song, I like it a lot. Paramore is a good band? I like their album Riot! and Amazon might still have their last album on sale for $5.

My latest album bought on expectation of being Awesome was Darren Hayes' This Delicate Thing We've Made. And it is. Strange, and inspired by Jules Verne and NASA? or something? but awesome.

The only other thing I can do is pimp Death Cab For Cutie, because I can never not pimp Death Cab For Cutie. Their last (full) album, Narrow Stairs, is a "grows on you" rather than a "radio-friendly" album but I love it. They are my favorite band because it's, like, the most upliftingly depressing emo music ever. Bad description, but the closest I can come to explain why songs about waiting rooms in hospitals, and being left drifting in purgatory cuz Heaven and Hell are full, are awesome and about love. And those two are just from Plans. Umm. Their earlier work I don't really listen to, because it was very much a growth process for both singing and songwriting ability for the band, but start with Transatlanticism (more emo than the other two). Plans is the album after that (I Will Follow You Into the Dark, major radio hit). Narrow Stairs (I Will Possess Your Heart was the hit off that one) is their latest, though they released a B-sides, The Open Door EP, with more songs that didn't make the final cut (but maybe should have).

TL;DR: I would recommend looking up these songs (I can upload them after I get off work in the name of pimpage if you think you want to give them a listen)
Weightless, by All Time Low
Misery Business (acoustic version), by Paramore
Casey, by Darren Hayes
The Tuning of Violins, by Darren Hayes
What Sarah Said, by Death Cab for Cutie
Crooked Teeth, by Death Cab for Cutie
Grapevine Fires, by Death Cab for Cutie
Long Division, by Death Cab for Cutie
Tiffany Blews, by Fall Out Boy
Clark Gable, by The Postal Service

and just for kicks:
Guilty Pleasure, by Cobra Starship (because it is mine)
