So about that post I had about sugar versus high fructose corn syrup soft drinks?

[livejournal.com profile] mecurtin and [livejournal.com profile] kickair8p both linked me to news of a Princeton study on the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup with some interesting conclusions.

From [livejournal.com profile] kickair8p - High Fructose Corn Syrup Causes Bigger Weight Gain in Rats from Slashdot.

From [livejournal.com profile] mecurtin - A sweet problem: Princeton researchers find that high-fructose corn syrup prompts considerably more weight gain published at News at Princeton.

Fascinating.

(This testing cycle ends tomorrow. We have a another one right on top, but I already finished my prework. My joy is very joyful.)

Joyful joy is YAY.

*cuddles you*

Writing continues, I will talk to you about it tonight.

And YES to your idea of last night. I have been considering the ways you can go about it.

What surprised me was that they counted male rats with around 500g as fat. I mean, rats vary a bit in size, but my three, still youngish (about six months) and active male rats, who naturally don't get any soda, but just a standard portion of rat food with some fresh fruit, vegetables and the occasional yogurt or egg, all weigh over 500g. And I bet they have a lot more exercise than poor lab rats kept in tiny cages, as mine are usually free to run around and play for three to five hours every day in a room where they can climb around (they have a rat climbing tree and several branches), and have a large cage with six levels for when they are locked up.

I'm allergic to corn and have had to cut it out of my diet. And in the last year or two, because of the HFCS news, a lot of manufacturers are not using it anymore. Yay! Except not, because now they're using corn grits and corn solids and corn gluten (a preservative in 'unprocessed' chicken, wth?) and all sorts of other products in stuff that didn't have corn in it before. So it's very difficult to cut out HFCS, and extraordinarily difficult to cut corn (in all of it's processed forms) out of your diet entirely. (No more dessert! Corn starch is in Confectioners Sugar.)

But I can also tell you that, due to my issues and a diabetic friend, my husband stopped drinking drinks with high fructose corn syrup, as well as strongly avoiding it in other foods; he's lost a bunch of weight, had the rest of his weight redistribute itself, and found himself eating a lot less food. (As well as craving more healthy stuff, though I can't say that's a direct things.)

So yes, while the study is not perfect, there is still something very wrong with the way corn is used in food in the US. Its hard but worth the effort to cut it out of your diet!
