Question I once asked a beta (circa The Forest People):

Is offscreen cannibalism really cannibalism?

For some reason, I find that unbelievably profound. Also, I don't know the answer. Is this like the zen question of one hand clapping?

In other words, welcome to Monday. Any other zen questions that don't involve the consumption of human flesh?

IMO about as much as any other fictional cannibalism.

Oddly enough, I once wrote a seminar paper exploring this very question. Although it was asking it about Senecan drama.

I suppose what it really depends on is whether it's left as a question for the viewer(/reader) whether said cannibalism actually occurred or not. If the actions definitely took place, offscreen or not, then they did. If it's merely implied cannibalism, however...

IAWTC.

Also, the cannibalism question is totally replacing "If a tree falls on a park ranger in the forest and no one is around to here him scream, does he really make a sound?" as my philosophical question of choice.

If a tree falls on a mime in the forest, does anybody care?

Probably not *exactly* what he had in mind...

I added you because you seem awesome, and I was hoping, I dunno, I could maybe hang around in a creepy stalker way and, like, bask in your awesomeness? Even if you reply with "AGH OMG DNW," sorry, I'm creepy, doin' it anyway.

If all that we do or seem is but a dream within a dream, is there really any point getting up in the morning?

You might find this book interesting -- it's all about the cultural impact of the concept of cannibalism:

An Intellectual History of Cannibalism, by Catalin Avramescu
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691133271

It's an awfully dense read, though -- "Guns, Germs, and Steel" this ain't, there's no effort to make this accessible to the casual reader. But it might help answer your question.
