fannish netiquette

Fannish Netiquette:

Sidebar--what wouldn't I give for a Miss Manners of fandom. I mean, for reference and also for hysteria. Can you see the questions that come in?

Dear Miss Fanmanners,
My cowriter and I have had an artistic difference in our latest wip. She says lube is optional and I said lube is necessary. We referenced minotaur and still can't agree! What do I do?
--Sleepless in SGA

Anyway. What's the etiquette on dead(or comatose) challenges? Let's say a hundred years ago someone did this awesome challenge. Do you appropriate with credit or try to track them down and ask if they are still in some kind of fandom-related activity? I'm mostly thinking of Kate Bolin's(?) Dead Letters and the ASCEML Getting to Know You. No, I don't actually want to organize them myself (though I would, seriously; Dead Letters are deeply awesome and I loved those). I kind of wish both had taken off as genres like the Five Things, to be honest. There is always a population for Dead Letters.

I was thinking that it would be nice to bring Dead Letters back, except that we actually kind of had a whole canon episode of it.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-09 11:53 pm (UTC)
*grits teeth* I am still pretending it was a Michael plot until canon forces otherwise. And I? Have a lot of denial. Smallville was *good* at teaching that.

Yes, i really want Dead Letters. I used to read those over tons of fandoms when that took off.

From: [identity profile] harriet-spy.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:00 am (UTC)
Actually, I was merely thinking of "Letters from Pegasus!"

I don't think anyone can own the idea of a kind of challenge. It might be nice to give Kate Bolin (I do think it was her, at least she ran the challenge if she didn't come up with it) a heads-up, but you don't control the general idea of a story prompt.

From: [identity profile] harriet-spy.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:01 am (UTC)
(She still has an LJ, I'm pretty sure, but I can't remember what it is.)

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:29 am (UTC)
You and your *logical episodes*. (My frustration with the season ender, let me show you it).

I'd feel a lot better getting permission first, honestly, if I can. It feels wrong to appropriate a challenge that specific.

I will say it's been used other places--I know [livejournal.com profile] hp100 did a Dead Letters Home challenge, for example, because I wrote for it. (That was, oh, five years ago? Six? GOD I HAVE BEEN HERE TOO LONG.)

From: [identity profile] tygress.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-09 11:49 pm (UTC)
I would think at least some sort of token effort to contact the orignator would be appropriate. At least through whatever contact information was easily available. :)

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-09 11:54 pm (UTC)
Hmm. I may see if I can track her down. I could swear she had an lj at one time.

I'm pretty sure Kate Bolin is still kicking around - she just moved the Silverlake archive to a new address, so. The Dead Letters thing was awesome. I also liked Challenge in a Can.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:33 am (UTC)
Oh, I remmber challenge in a can! Okay, going to track now. Thanks!

She's [livejournal.com profile] katemonkey on LJ. :)

Got it! Thank you! Email sent!

From: [identity profile] tygress.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:20 am (UTC)
*nodnods* If nothing else, you could always include a disclaimer or something in the challenge info/faq/whichever that explains where the idea came from?

From: [identity profile] tygress.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:21 am (UTC)
And on an entirely separate note, I now want to start a 'Dear Ms. Fanmanners' project... >.>

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:29 am (UTC)
Please God someone should. Teh combination of useful information and lulz could *not be beat*.

From: [identity profile] tygress.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:33 am (UTC)
oh... God. I want to. I really do. I want to see the letters and I want to do weekly guest spots to bring in writers to answer questions and there could be character challenges and...and..

Damn it. I'm doomed.

And! You could offer up a poll to see if LJ-at-large agrees with Miss Manners' answer. Then open the floor to let other people take a whack and see if they can do it any better.

Much potential for awesome.

I tracked down the stories, etc., for one of [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's old SV challenges, and I started by asking her. So I say, try to find the originator/compiler first.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:32 am (UTC)
*crosses fingers* Do you know if the Getting to Know You was person specific by any chance? You were on ASCEML when it went around, do yu remmber? Iv'e done small groups of it before for XMM and SV, but an updated panfandom version would be deeply, deeply awesome.

Isn't it kid of a problem though that the characters you'd like to see dead letters off, your really wouldn't want to think about being dead? Maybe it's just me.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:30 am (UTC)
It was, at the time, an awesome idea of the character writing a letter that's supposed to be read after their death.

*thinks of aaaaaaaalllllll the characters who could canonically write them*

*hed asplodes*

Also, I once had a strong urge to write a Dead Letter for Blake in QAF but then! Not dead :D

I say Viva La Revival (what? I just took a Spanish final, I know no french)! I'd love a link to the Dead Letters thing, it sounds cool and I have no idea what it is, and given the propensity of this fandom to be AWESOME, I figure it's even cooler than I'm picturing.

I totally think you should create a fandom Dear Abby for questions like these, if only for the lulz.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 12:31 am (UTC)
WOULD IT NOT BE AWESOME TO HAVE A FANNISH MISS MANNERS? GLEE!

From: [identity profile] thisissirius.livejournal.com Date: 2008-05-10 08:10 am (UTC)
