Livejournal will never ever...
Screw with interests.
Or.
Remove basic to offer an exciting new level of account called sponsored users. Wait, you say. Isn't that plus?
Ah, no. At least, I don't think so.
Actually, I could be wrong, because I can't read code for shit yet. But as part of trying to work out classes, I started reading LJ code to get used to the patterns.
LJ Change Log, February 27, 2008.
I was looking at this:
+##
+## Returns possible domain for choosing sponsors.
+## Sponsor domain is defined for all users, not only in class 'sponsored'
+## When choosing a sponsor, domain of sponsor and user must match
+##
+sub get_sponsor_domain {
+ my $u = shift;
+ return 'sup' if LJ::SUP->is_sup_enabled($u);
+ return '6a';
+}
+
+##
+## Is user eligible for 'sponsored' account?
+##
+sub can_be_sponsored {
+ my $u = shift;
+ # all 'paid' account types - Paid, Permanent, Sponsored can not become Sponsored
+ return 0 if $u->get_cap('paid');
+ # is sponsors of user's domain enabled?
+ my $d = $u->get_sponsor_domain;
+ return 0 unless $LJ::SPONSOR_DOMAINS{$d} && $LJ::SPONSOR_DOMAINS{$d}->{enabled};
+ return 1;
+}
+
+sub sees_sponsored_in_matrix {
+ my $u = shift;
+ # is sponsors of user's domain enabled?
+ my $d = $u->get_sponsor_domain;
+ return 0 unless $LJ::SPONSOR_DOMAINS{$d} && $LJ::SPONSOR_DOMAINS{$d}->{enabled};
+ return 1;
+}

I thought they meant communities. Not so much, since those already exist, so why bother with this?
Sponsored Accounts FAQ (coming soon)
And google search with some fascinating insights into how to go about getting oneself a sponsor. Still haven't turned up a TOS or FAQ yet, but possibly it's not yet online.
And this weird one (shows up on several of the google pages): Sponsored accounts are cool!
Okay, I am perfectly aware I could be reading the code wrong and this is actually plus with a new name. Except I don't think so. Also kind of amused if I'm reading this right that they've been working on the removal of basic accounts since October, the same time they started adding in the sponsored code.
Feel free to correct if I'm wrong; again, I'm reading for pattern, not literally, so for all I know, they're switching names around or something. It *could* be communities, but from what I can read on the classes, this isn't the community based coding. Nor is most of the stuff from google referring to communities instead of users.

From:I remember talk of sponsored accounts from as far back as last summer, although I'm annoyingly unable to put fingers to details -- it's not a renaming of paid, but a way to sell dedicated names/spaces to corporations, bands, whatev. More customization for the money, the way myspace is used by the industry. And nothing that necessarily changes normal accounts (not that I wouldn't put it past 'em.)
I thought so too--I remember the stuff on bands very vaguely from strikethrough, but this (http://www.livejournal.com/translate/editpage.bml?lang=af&items=1:6670,1:4629,1:9107,1:8899,1:8874,1:8875,1:8876,1:8877,1:8878,1:8879) seems to imply otherwise. I could be totally wrong, but again, with the way things are going, I wasn't even really surprised. How depressing.

ETA linebreaks
From:So, lets say Pepsi buys adspace from lj. Those interests are what determine what search strings will bring up their ads. Which isn't horrifying in this case, but it does suggest why LJ might not want a lot of people who's ljs show 'incest' or 'rape' as an interest.

From:I've also notice the a common thing which happens when they tweak the site, aside from comment notifications crashing, is the searches and friends pages get buggy.
If I may engage in pure speculation: this problem is rooted somewhere in the sites development history. To speculate more wildly, maybe it began when 6A started making development primarily in house, although I've read rumors, which I cannot find now, Brad was not always the best manager of this issue.

From:Of course, cross-posting is no more a perfect solution than any of the other alternatives and suggestions around - they all end up with a large portion of "watch LJ-based fandom scatter to the four winds via attrition". And, while it makes it easier for your flist to find *you*, it doesn't do much to help you find your flist. (Generic "you", of course.)
There is something that's been rumored re Brad Fitz~whatsit and one of his new projects that does give me some hope of a solution to that (you-generic finding your flist), though. Something about a new type of feed aggregator that pulls from many types of sites but displays like an LJ flist. Hopefully I don't have that wrong - I am shaky on the details due to my self-taught and semi-illiterate computer (mis)understanding, plus I haven't been following any new developments since I figure when something substantial comes down noone will be able to avoid tripping over the info.
And finally, in the unlikely but still vaguely possible - I keep hoping that SUP ends up deciding that non-Russian LJ is just too much trouble to maintain and force profits from, and they'll sell it to some beneficient LJ-addicted rich person who'll wind back time on the stupidest changes and not worry about making a profit. Unlikely but vaguely possible, right, at least partially...
*le sigh*
