Accomplished

I have updated recs! Except not all of them. Because I can't feel my fingers anymore. I have lost the fingerprint on my index finger due to the laptop's touchpad and eight to ten hours of coding and redoing the CSS for four pages on my website.

Okay, the thing is? All I was going to do was split Sheppard/McKay up from Gen and Other Pairing, because wow, that page got long. Did anyone know it got that long? How on earth was it usable? Anyway, I pulled the other and gen out and got them each their own page and thought, well, while I'm here, let's fix that thing.

Ten hours later...

(This is a dramatic bit of foreshadowing to tempt you to click the cut, expecting something fascinating. It's a total lie, though, but do tell me if it worked?)

Ten hours later, I had new style sheet and three redesigned pages (the main rec.html I seriously hate, but that's going to have to wait until I overhaul all the indexes on my site, because, hi, I'm a little OCD and it's going to drive me nuts if all the indexes don't match.

God I hate div. It's an unnatural obsession. It's like semicolons and sentences with three subjects and four predicates interspersed with verbs that I love so much; it's evil.

Then.

Then I thought, you know? I want new colors. Then I remembered the reason I like white is because I went through a black background phase and am still punishing myself for it. So I changed link colors.

Then I thought, while I'm here, let's just go ahead and update to current the gen and other pairing. That's not so much, right? You've only been obsessing over freaking em for like, five hours. No biggie.

And by the time I got done absolute positioning and trying not to open Adobe Photoshop (update those headers! And then I opened it. I just closed it an hour ago), I thought, I wonder if I can finish all of it in a single fell swoop.

In case you're curious, no. This is because I can't actually see the screen anymore, as I am actually filled with some kind of Webpage Mania and started looking at the main page and thinking, you know, this is so very 2003, how do you feel about flash, Jenn? Hmm?. I said Hell no and bookmarked five sites instead which I am totally untempted to use.

Sheppard/McKay is only half-coded, so the page that says Sheppard/McKay is still the old SGA one. If I'm lucky, tomorrow I won't be tempted to do it. But I probably will anyway.

...I really can't face counting Sheppard/McKay tonight. I tried to count earlier and realized I had to hand code all of them and that counting would be a very bad idea if I wanted to, oh, finish.

Anyway. Long winded way of saying, whee. If you go, tell me if there's anything showing up weird? My laptop is 1600/1200, so perspective is officially a problem, since it really can't do lower resolutions. All work was done in the latest version of Firefox. I will be eternally grateful if you see anything that I didn't and tell me.

I'm honestly not sure what to do about the screen problem to make it look standard for everyone and not look tiny on my laptop. I've switched between em and percentage and pixel to try and get a set size that works. I do not care what purists say--I miss tables and Jesus, what does CSS have against centering? I'm tempted to go read again about overflow and give my self some kind of heart attack, because last time I tried to advance my knowledge, I later tried to drink myself to amnesia to forget the horror.

And wasn't that a fascinating digression? I need to work in a porn shop. I would haev better stories.

I am at 1280*1024 and it looks great in flock 0.7, opera 9 and netscape 9.
In IE6 the content is confined to a narrow column down the lefthand side, with no content under the main title at all.

Weirdly, the IE6 issue doesn't occur in 800*600 - but does at 1024*768 and 1280*1024.
FF, Flock, Opera and Netscape all perform well at all three resolutions checked.

I think I fixed the IE. *crosses fingers* I can see why people get programs to do this now. THis is far too stressful.

Got here through my friendsfriends' page, and I couldn't resist clicking the cut because it looked like you were going to be documenting an epic internet battle, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Everything looks nice on my screen; I'm on Firefox at 1152x864.

And word to CSS and centering. At least with tables shit lined up. CSS is so pretty but so, so frustrating for me.

Yes! Why did they leave out so much automatic positioning for center and right? It's three commands to get something *around* center and I still haven't figured out how to work that cross browser and at most screen sizes without the text being either ridiculously small or ridiculously big and blocky.

In IE7 with widescreen, all the recs show up in a narrow column on the left side of the screen.

I too have the narrow column thing in IE7 on my laptop at 1280x800

I think it fixed when I stripped absolute positing out and gave left a couple of breaks to make it stay open.

Looks good overall, but I think something went wonky on the OT3/etc. page. You may've forgotten to close a font size and align center tag after the third story. Something went really wrong with blockquotes mixed with div. Let me look. I think I used that as a placeholder until I created a new class for quotes, but I don't remember.

OK, I see what you mean by divs. And I see the IE7 issues, too.

Some suggestions, in the brief time I have before hurtling off on expeditions related to Someone's Twelfth Birthday, OMG How Did This Happen (which I'm guessing you understand *completely*):

1. This is a job for Definitions Lists:
http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/lists.html#h-10.3
because that's the logic of each story title+description pair. Remember, the first rule of using CSS is to start with structured content, so if the CSS is stripped away the arrangment of the material still makes sense.

2. You're mixing in divs and font specifications in a way that is confusing to me. I shall detangle later. I would probably define a SPAN named "new" and use it for the NEW! notice.

3. Why do you have the "left" and "right" divs? What are you trying to accomplish here? Why not just one section for the main text, with a margin? I think this must be where that IE7 problem is creaping in.

I can look into it in more detail later (post BDay-related activities), if you like. Ironing out CSS is part of what I *do*, so not a big deal.

IE7 *shouldn't*. This is a modification of what I did for work, which works in IE6 and 7. Hmm.

And fixed with the removal of absolute positioning and giving left break commands. Well, the IE column problem.

Now your page itself has a much stronger, more logical structure -- even someone who doesn't load the css knows that everything is coming in pairs, and that everything in "Single Stories" belong together logically.

Question--can you tell me what is causing the page to scroll off right side in firefox? Ii'm at percentages and no container is a set pixel or em anymore for more liquidity. IE isn't doing it.
