In a hideously difficult decision, I am trying to decide if re-reading a fic I know I read before but do not remember counts for the tracking of my reading or not. Keep in mind I got in an ethical quandry about a story [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches described to me and I couldn't quite figure out if that counted since she gave me all the major plot points and it was just like reading, except reduced to less than forty words and without porn.

To Do List

1 hour - stare into space, claim inspiration.
30 minutes - stare into space, claim planning housework.
30 minutes - consider a course of action not staring into space.

And I got tired and gave up typing.

Actually, To-Do needs to include something like figure out why external is no longer responding. As it stopped working and I cannot get it to connect for love, money, or various pieces of Latin poetry I looked up on Wikipedia in hopes I'd accidentally hit a spell for hard drive failure. I'm not panicking even though all my media is on there. All. My. Media. And my only way to backup John II, who has shown a sudden and distressing talent for blue screening whenever I'm on youtube too long. I really have no idea what that is about, unless my mind's trying to shield me from hitting that damned vid that compiles all these horror movies like The Ring and The Grudge and The Terror or whatever (been working on repression). I keep staring at it, thinking, it won't be so bad. The thing is? I know it will be. It will take every terrifying second in each movie and condense it into a small, condensed pile and I will never sleep again and its not like I'm sleeping all that well now.

Pony

So the biggest common factor in my musical choices these days is whether someone has vidded it or not. I suspected as much earlier, but confirmation came while singing Counting Bodies Like Sheep while no where near my iPod and suddenly remembered I really used to hate that song.

So I created a playlist and went to work, pulling all songs I'd bought CDs for, downloaded, begged from friends, or got from the iTunes store. It's kind of boggling but suddenly makes sense why I get the same emotional hit from Dante's Prayer and Coming Undone by Korn on the same playlist.

The truth is--I have one playlist. I have *variations* on the playlist, but there's just one, and I add to it depending on who vidded it recently. I know this means something unhealthy, or should, but mostly, it makes an interesting argument about musical context I have neither the education nor the vocabulary to word. Suffice to say, it took me two years to find the specific version of Bolero used in an SGA vid and it moved into multiple repeat the second I found it, replacing the times I made my mother sit with me at the piano so we could play it. Some things I don't like until they have a context I can relate to, which is universally true and really doesn't need to be said.

Actually, it makes me think there must be specific mood triggers in me (everyone?) that decide like/not like in music more than actual inborn or created preference. There's a lot of music on here I listen to for context more than the music itself--ah, this one, I broke up to this one or Madelyn gave me this one after we fought! (no, this one is not real. She never gives me music after we fight. She thinks it's negative reinforcement.), and etc etc etc. I like Appalacian Spring because it was the theme song in the Coleco Vision video Game Smurfs (I miss that game so much I can't stand it) and I get tiny flashes of wandering through the woods jumping over things as a Smurf, and I loved the Smurfs.

I'm just still amused by the idea that Nezsa spent years making me listen to Rammstein and a whole host of German metal and at this point, if someone did an SGA Sheppard/McKay to it, I'd probably buy the albums and start muttering in German while testing at work. It's kind of cool.

*perks* Bolero? *grabby hands*

Also, I have 3 lists. Everything I know that's not broadway. Everything I know WITH broadway and one that combines them.

...okay I do have a smaller *OMG HIT REPEAT!!!* list. But I don't use it as much.

Actually, To-Do needs to include something like figure out why external is no longer responding.

You know, when I first read that, I thought "external" referred to your body, because the previous paragraph was all about staring into space and planning to do housework, only without any housework getting accomplished. Which is pretty much how my cleaning intentions go, and really that my To-List doesn't have a responding "external" for getting these things actually accomplished is a very apt description...

So the biggest common factor in my musical choices these days is whether someone has vidded it or not.

You're not alone. Most of the new music I collect these days seems to come from fan vids. I even have separate SGA and SPN playlists for my Ipod.

Nel's vid also inspired me to track down and buy Baz Luhrman's CD because of that Bolero version. Luckily, it has at least 3 other songs that have been featured in songvids (mainly SGA even), so it was worth it.

Where did you find it? I went through iTunes store and then ended up going inch by inch through a site listening to five thousand versions before I foudn this one.

From: [identity profile] cetpar.livejournal.com Date: 2008-01-26 10:59 pm (UTC)
I caved and ordered it from Amazon. I really, really wanted that version and couldn't find it anywhere. I also wanted I'm Losing You after seeing Mamoru's vid (http://www.viddish.org/sga.html).

Now that I think about it, that CD is probably one of the last full, physical CDs I've bought.

ETA: Go me for posting this in the wrong place. Sorry about that.

I will admit to buying songs off iTunes because they were in vids (note to RIAA: this works, stop suing) even if I wasn't overawed by the vid itself. But I will also admit to also taking songs off of Percy's default playlist because they were vidded and I can't separate the two anymore. Especially when the vid sucked.

Live by the sword, die by it, I guess.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-01-26 10:50 pm (UTC)
Huh. I wonder if I've done that with really bad vids. I don't see many, as I go by rec-only (becasue for some reason, bad vids are like badfic--it is very hard to stop).

I will admit I twitch to Bring Me Back to Life because of teh many vids I've seen. Literal twitch.

From: [identity profile] miss-porcupine.livejournal.com Date: 2008-01-26 10:55 pm (UTC)
I go by recs only with vids, too, because... yeah. But it took me a while to realize that (a) just because you trust someone for fiction doesn't mean you can trust them for vids and (b) as with fanfic, just because someone is reccing a vid in a community doesn't mean it's any good.

The truth in that statement is depressing.

Spent an embarassing amount of time on You Tube this past week (seriously, my partner and I were sitting in different rooms of the same house emailing vid recs back and forth - kinda sad), and now have songs stuck in my head that I don't even know the artists for. People, if you vid, list the song and the artist as we can find them and obsess about them. So many songs on my playlist are from vids, are potential vids, or would work for background music for a scene in a story.

Re: Rammstein - have not found a SGA video to it yet, but made a Buffy one a while ago. The urge to go back to You Tube or Kawoosh is getting strong...

I had the same problem; turned out it had something to do with overrunning the buffer -- upgrading to the most recent version of Flash solved the issue.

Once I thought I would do a post for my flist about the songs which fandom had introduced to me, because some of my f-list is not heavily in to any fandom and I thought music-as-attracting-factor could be interesting.

So I took a look at my music, and quickly realized it would take *less time* and involve *less* songs if I were to simply post the songs that DIDN'T have any kind of con/fic/story/show/movie connotation for me.

Basically, right there with you.

This is not entirely directed at you, you've just hit on a pet peeve of mine (and most of my profession), so here are some random definitions. *g*

Positive reinforcement: The immediate presentation of a reinforcing stimulus which serves to increase the likelihood of the preceding behaviour reoccurring under similar circumstances in the future. (eg: Madelyn giving you music after fighting, leading to you intentionally picking fights in the future.) It doesn't matter whether or not it's a behaviour you *should* reinforce; people misapply positive reinforcement all the time when they give a child candy to make her stop throwing a temper tantrum instead of giving her candy when she does something nice for her little brother.

Negative reinforcement: The immediate removal of a punishing stimulus which serves to increase the likelihood of the preceding behaviour reoccurring under similar circumstances in the future. (eg: Madelyn takes out your garbage after fighting, leading to you intentionally picking fights in the future.)

Positive punishment: The immediate presentation of a punishing stimulus which serves to decrease the likelihood of the preceding behaviour reoccurring under similar circumstances in the future. (eg: Madelyn giving your really awful music that you can't stand and not letting you turn it off after fighting, leading to you intentionally avoiding fights in the future.)

Negative punishment: The immediate removal of a reinforcing stimulus which serves to decrease the likelihood of the preceding behaviour reoccurring under similar circumstances in the future. (eg: Madelyn deleting your music playlist after fighting, leading to you intentionally avoiding fights in the future.)

Essentially, "reinforcement" means it increases a behaviour, "punishment" means it decreases the behaviour, while "positive" and "negative" only indicate whether something was applied or removed. Though I should note that behaviour analysts *rarely* use positive punishment, which tends to lead to further behaviour problems and emotional distress... not to mention failing to teach someone what they should *actually* do the next time, only what not to do. We're more likely to use a DRI, or Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behaviours, and reinforce behaviours that are incompatible with the behaviour we're trying to extinguish (eg: Madelyn doesn't reinforce or punish you after a fight, but instead brings over a nice cold bottle of Coke to share after you compliment her).

::puts away behaviour analyst hat::
