multifandom recs - the comfort fic collection
So I wanted some comfort fic and went to look up some old favorites. Most of these I've recced before.
Yet Another Snape Meets the Dursleys Story by rabbit and v-Jinx-v, Harry Potter, gen - totally gen h/c emotional porn. I love this story. This is one of my go-to comfort fics for the entire Snape Meets The Dursleys, Realizes How Much They Suck, Hates Them So Much, Is Generally Fucking Kick Ass and Super Competent While Dudley Turns Out to Eventually Be Awesome and Snape and Harry Bond So Much. It hits all my gen h/c kinks, with the Pathetic!Brave!Stoic! So!Goddamn!Gryffindor!Harry and Reluctantly!Admitting!Bias!Against!Harry! And!Uber!Competent!Snape and the sucky Dudsleys so very much told on child abuse and being shitty human beings and my personal favorite Personal!Growth!Dudley.
..wow, count those capital letters.
Nightblooming Heartsease by
julad fic Transfigurations (Harry Potter, Harry/Draco) which is also a favorite fic but not a comfort fic. If you've read this, you may or may not get why I love this one when I really want to feel warm and fuzzy because yeah, I know how it ends, but ending was part of the journey and the entire thing is gorgeous. The author created the prequel whole as an exploration of the lives of Snape and Neville during war that occurred before the events of Transfigurations and took great pains to not only write fully-fleshed, three dimensional characters but a fully fleshed, uncertain, gorgeous three dimensional relationship that explained how being different people didn't necessarily mean there isn't common ground to be explored and cherished. It's wartime desperation and amazing domestic sweetness and two people who work together and learn together and then fall in love together. Warning: character death. But honest to God, that's part of what makes it comfort fic.
Goodnight Moon by yahtzee, Joan of Arcadia/The Day After Tomorrow crossover, gen - it's wistful and dreamy and sad in the very best, most uplifting, most human way possible. When this hit fandom, I think everyone recced it. And it was totally worth it.
An Affair to Remember by Tira Nog, SGA, AU, John/Rodney - yes, it's a SGA version of the movie. This is emotional porn for me. I only read it once a year now so as to keep that fresh reaction of just ridiculous amounts of tear-wiping and contented purring.
Fearless, Mindless Fancy by
giddygeek, SGA, AU, John/Rodney - it's adorable and creepy and wonderful adn so much fun. John is a psychic! Rodney has a TV show about science and debunks this kind of thing! THEY THEN HUNT GHOSTS!
Benediction by
thete1 - this was one of the earliest Smallville fics written and still among my absolute favorite for being gorgeous and sweet and everything Lex and Clark could have been.
Ice by
merryish, Smallville, Clark/Lex - I love this story. There is a storm! And a barn! And Clark and Lex with no idea what the hell they're doing but going to try anyway. You know. To keep warm. Emotional intensity plus hotness can never go wrong. <--link corrected, thanks to
merrily for the link
Omiai by Rose Emily, Smallville, AU, Clark/Lex - arranged marriage fic! Secretly falling in love! Angst! God, this one is every cliche I love done briliantly well. And long, long, long.
Primary by velvetglove, Smallville, Clark/Lex - a long, slow, deliciously building relationship after many years and much heartbreak and so wallowable.
Loves Me Not by
astolat, SGA, John/Rondey - in which nothing in this not hilarious and sweet and funny and adorable and sure, Rodney loves chocolate, but kind of thinking that's not the only reason it goes this way.
If anyone wants to throw out their go-to-comfort fics? I would not like, be opposed or anything.

Comfort fic!
From:Freeport colony: a notorious den of pirates, smugglers and thieves. Wufei persuades one of its denizens, his one-time ally Duo, to help him catch a killer hiding there. Agent Chang thinks he knows what to expect, from this case, from Freeport and from Duo Maxwell. He couldn't be more wrong. (Duo/Wufei)
Always a Woman, by Arsenic Jade (Gundam Wing)
How things look from where Une is standing.
Shade of the Leaf, by Ravyn (Naruto)
Sasuke is back. Naruto has joined ANBU. Sakura is spending more time in the hospital than in the field. Team 7 struggles to redefine itself, because sometimes you don't know what you really want after all. NaruSaku. (48,294 words)
A Very Long Summer, by Calathea (I Want to Go Home!)
Mike and Rudy go back to Camp Algonkian Island... as counsellors! (37,000 words)
Cradle Robbing, by Metisket (Fullmetal Alchemist)
I don't know how to summarize this fic, so have a quote instead:
“But, dude, knock off the stalking. It’s creepy. It is my job to be creepy, and I don’t like it when upstart kids horn in on my turf.”
“I don’t do it often,” he said, shrugging. “I just…every once in a while have to check that she hasn’t gotten killed or something.”
“How fucking romantic,” Rebecca cooed. “And when I say romantic, I mean weird. Can’t you just go to the door and ask her out like a normal person?”
The look she got for that one was grim. Like, depths-of-despair type grim. “I’m too young for her,” he said. Must have been a thought that tortured him daily or something, given his expression.
But to this argument, Rebecca was inclined to reply, Yeah right. Check out those eyes, twenty going on Hohenheim. He wasn’t too young for anybody.
This was an insecurity thing, though. Rebecca knew you couldn’t attack insecurity things straight on, because they weren’t logical. So she attacked sideways.
“Hey, cradle-robbing is just one of the many things I believe her totally capable of,” she said. “So cheer up, right? You may yet get jumped by scary older women.”
Only response she got to that was a smile of enormous self-mockery. “I’m sure you’re right,” he said. And then he just wandered off, like, too sexy to wait for a response.
The gauntlet, Rebecca thought, had definitely been thrown.
LoPiverse, by AJ Hall (Harry Potter)
Harry Potter futurefic, mostly written before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Draco/Neville, and the series that got me into fanfic. ^_^
Forward Momentum, by Bracketyjack (Vorkosigan)
This Miles fanfic novel of manners is in canon to A Civil Campaign and Winterfair Gifts, but AU to Diplomatic Immunity. Besides the devil making work for idle hands, and a runaway plot-bunny that most unnaturally mated with a New Year Resolution, it's mostly a result of upending LMB's creative rule of thumb about when in doubt making the worst possible thing happen. Suppose really good things started happening, and Miles was there to run with them... (~175,000 words)

From:I know everybody loves Merry's Ice, but my all-time favorite of hers is Downtime, a sweet Jack/Daniel pre-slash that just made of cute! Long, sweet, adorable cute, with a great ending for Sam, too. *happy place*
Springwoof's Left to Fend/The Body Holographic, epic 40 years of John/Rodney angst then OMG at the end. \o/
Sabershadowkat's Haven, Clark/Lex pure h/c + emotional porn. My id's reading habits, let me show you them.
Pru's Conflicts of Interest / Visiting Hours, Clark/Lex, plus CONNOR!!! Epic <3
Speaking of Pru: In-Law, Gibbs is trying to take care of an injured Tony, but his father is upsetting the apple cart. Shorter than the above, but made of HEE!
Dira Sudis's Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive, Jack/Ianto, angst, death, confusion, happy ending. (Written before The Ep That Doesn't Exist In My World, but, you know, not a bad idea.)
Zahra's The Kingdom of the Blaggers, Merlin/Arthur modern Hollywood AU (because bonus Ari Gold makes everything better!)
Gingertart's The Fourth Deathly Hallow, Snape/Harry—Snape, Harry, and Draco transported to Sherlock Holmes' Victorian London! <3
Tira Nog's A Nick In Time / Growing Pains, Snape/Harry—Snape and Harry get kid-ified. Oops, there's my id showing again!
You're more of a Drarry girl, yes? My fave is Vorabiza's Secrets, which kind of hits all your caps above, minus Pathetic, I think; it's more in the direction of Super!Harry. But I am so totally downloading that Dursleys story! (Did you see all the Dudley recs in

From:My comfort fics... excluding things written by your good self, hmm.
At the moment, Reparations and Foundations, both H/D.
The Student Prince got me through mildly invasive eye exams today (in podfic form, that is; the link I've given goes to the text version).
Chaletian's Village!verse.
This one is not one of my comfort fics but it strikes me as something you might like: Degrees of Separation, a K/S fic which involves an emergency mindmeld, and also violence and torture (of them, by third parties), and eventually there is sex.
Robots Need Love Too, a Mythbusters space age primary-school AU.
Aaaand So Wise We Grow, a K/S kidfic (adoptive, not MPreg) epic, if that is your type of thing.

From:As for comfort fic, Omiai pretty much defines it for me. Back in the day I used to read it and Lanning's Identical stories back to back and then start over again. But I also adore punk's The Milk and Cookies War (http://home.teleport.com/~punkm/milkwar.html), because of the *yearning* and Lex's (thankfully failed) attempt to rationalize it away.
In SGA, comfort comes from ltlj's Retrograde (http://archiveofourown.org/series/455) series and the Hunting Parties (http://archiveofourown.org/series/460) series, especially the latter. I love the intertwined team dynamics in the former and the combination of outsider POV and delicious hurt/comfort in the latter. And the sly humor in both. Gentle humor is very comforting. I also love the grand/prosaic romance of Wesleysirl's On Life and the Living (http://home.comcast.net/~wesleysgirl/fanfiction/sga/life.html).
For Star Trek, you could re-read your own "You'll Get There In the End." Lord knows I do. *g* I love the flashbacks that fill in the blanks for the movie so perfectly and I love Spock's determination and logical purpose -- and the way it covers the fact that he won't admit he's jealous of his older self. (And I love, love, love the podfic version.)
Finally, a great Halloween story from the old X-Files days: The Dreaming Sea (http://members.fortunecity.com/spookyawards/dreamingsea.txt) by revely. This is (mostly) a case file that's funny and eerie and simply lovely.
Feel better soon. : )

From:Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance (http://mellacita.livejournal.com/767196.html) Because, much like the Clark/Lex dynamic, I don't believe that Arthur is owed Merlin's secrets. So I really love a story that shoves that in Arthur's face. And then they get on with the business of being awesomely destined or whatever after Arthur gets some perspective. “My father,” Merlin agreed, wiping at the skin beneath his eyes. “And he was going to help us even though Camelot ruined his life. So don't you dare point that sword that I sharpened for you at me and act like you're the only person in all of Albion who has ever been wronged or lied to or betrayed.”
When a Strawberry is Pushed to the Mountain (http://www.smallville.slashdom.net/archive/22/whena.html). I'm 100% sure you know this fic, but it's one of my favorite clex stories.
Hunger (http://epiphanyx7.dreamwidth.org/41064.html) Domestic-y (as much as you can get with Wolverine and Gambit). A relationship issue hashed out through communication (repeat parentheses). Hot p0rn (this one's probably easier to believe). That hadn't been the point at all, though, and it hits Remy deep in his gut. Logan had been looking for a place to settle down, somewhere people wouldn't treat them like shit or try and run them off. Looking for a run-down house to fix up, to put up the picket fence and paint it white, and how had Remy missed noticing that between the two of them it was Logan who was the teen-aged girl in their sadly dysfunctional relationship?

From:**It isn't DH compliant in the sense of how Snape feels towards Lily. But damn, there's a flashback that she twists his spite to suit herself. It gives me chills.
One of the many sections that never fail to make me cry and hurt with the love.
"Everyone looks very happy," Snape said, studying the wide crayoned grins the figures wore. With a long finger he pointed out the exception. "Except me."
"You're happy too," Harry said seriously. "But you don't smile with your mouth like everyone else."
Avoiding Dumbledore's gaze Snape kept his eyes on the brightly coloured picture. "How do you know I'm happy then?"
Harry pointed to a pink blob on the drawn figure Snape hadn't noticed before. "Your smile's in your heart, daddy."
