I think this could be worked around, especially in fics where magic is the whole cause of the pregnancy. In those cases I would just assume that the spine was reinforced too. But there are also the cases of women with spine-conditions carrying children to term. I'm sure they probably had problems, but it's definetely possible.

On another note, I knew that women's and men's lubar-sacral joints are different and that men should they get pregnant would have to give birth via c-section or something like it (or magic) because of the shape of their hip-bones, but I didn't know that there were additional significant differences in the reinforcement of the spine. You learn something every day. Thanks

It's pretty nifty. The curve in the lower back is spread out over 3 vertebrae (rather than 2 in men) to help weight distribution, and having the joints behind the spinal cord about 14% larger in women then men and orientated better to better brace the weight.

Which basically means that -apart from everything else- you don't tip forward from carrying 7lbs or more of baby in front of you all the time.

(And the thing is hand-wave-magic pregnancy with the lack of womb? I'm fine even though that's a much bigger thing than the back, and yet it's the back that does it in for me.)
