mmmm, movie

Took Child to see The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which was--wow. Jsut as good as I hoped. Perhaps even better. I--hmm.

It always worked for me on both levels--as a secular fairy story of sorts, and as a Christian allegory, what have you. And I'm perfectly comfortable reading it either way. Leaving out the Eternal Debates About Susan (which I honestly don't see as some strange anti-woman thing going on, but I respect the other interpretations of it), what I love about it best is that for me, it's the spirit of my religion. It's maybe a simplistic thing, but on the other hand, to me, Christianity is simple. The spirit is forgiveness, and becoming something stronger, something better despite the mistakes you make, growing beyond them, learning from them, accepting them, doing what we can to fix them and regret them, and moving the fuck *on* from them. And it's in a nutshell why I can't accept the strictures of the Christian Right in America, and it's all kind of broken down into Aslan saying, what's done is done, and everyone saying, okay. And we are done here.

I mean, if I were a missionary, I'd set everyone down with these suckers and say, read *this*. This is what we're supposed to be. Three lines in a book. That's everything you need to know about Christianity, and it's so simple, and it never ceases to blow my mind that somehow, we still manage to get *that* wrong so completely.

You can see I'm not and never have been a theologian.

I saw it today with my mom, who hadn't read the books since she was in junior high. We both enjoyed it.

Right there is everything I love about the allegorical aspects of the Chronicles of Narnia. Thank you for articulating it, because I totally couldn't.

We took my mom and Amber to see it yesterday, all of us really enjoyed the heck out of it. Amber wants to read the books which is always a very good thing. :)

Jsut as good as I hoped. Perhaps even better.

Leaves me thinking that perhaps it would, after all, be an idea to dose myself up on my painkillers to sit in the cinema with my daughter and youngest son. (Which I was put off from doing by someone saying it was not that great.)

I highly recommend it. It's not a flashy epic movie. But I think I like that about it. It's like the books, almost, in the style and storytelling, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Eternal Debates About Susan

Argh! They make me want to pull my hair out. It's not like she died and was lost forever. She was simply not ready for Heaven at that time. She had the rest of her life to find her way back. And I can see that with the Susan in the movie -- she's trying hard to be the grown-up, practical one in their mother's absence. Easy for her to go a bit overboard later on.

Very well put. I can't wait to see the movie, I'm glad to hear it was good.

One thing the movie did for me was sending me right to IMDb after I got home to see who the hell played Tumnus and why he seemed vaguely familiar. And now I have a vague urge to rewatch Children of Dune just to see lots more of him, though it's just not the same without him using his natural Scottish accent...
