So Austin is bracing itself for what appears to be the next big apocalypse--by this, I mean, there is neither bread nor water nor Ramen left at the grocery stores.

No, I'm being *literal* here. Not a loaf of bread, a container of water, or a package of Ramen Noodles, even the icky faux-creamy shrimp ones.

My family, not one to be left out of this charming semi-suburban/urban panic, stocked up on such necessities as Dr. Pepper, cheese, crackers, sausage, the ingredients for cheese dip, and a lot of English muffins. Mostly, I'm just trying to figure out what emergency will entail needing *English muffins*. Also, how we will make cheese dip should it turn out that we do lose electricity.

I'm guessing that we'll all get out our lighters and *melt* the cheese that way.

*rubs forehead*

I was just thinking about you, and wondering if you, in fact, had water and...things. And then I had this fleeting moment of oh, wow, what if the cable goes out and she misses SGA? And then I smacked myself because *hey*, more important things to worry about here.

And your family is resourceful. I have every confidence that cheese will get melted.

Um. ANYWAY. *sends good thoughts!*

You know that Jenn, she's a real little cheese melter!

You can never underestimate the power of food to provide comfort in times of tragedy. Now, more than ever before, is the time for melted cheese and English muffins!!

Though not together, because that would be disgusting and there's never a need for that.

It's the same here in Houston. Yesterday, I bartered a flashlight (which are now quite scarce) for a non-cordless phone. And batteries? Forget it. I'm just smug because I got the last triscuits in town.

One of my aunts called long distance yesterday to say: "You're all going to die horribly! The city will be wiped out! You should have fled! But stay calm."

I don't know about you, but I feel so much better after such sage counsel. *eye roll*

Girl, I am sure that you will be find, but please keep us posted on what's going on if you can (barring blackouts and refugees at your doorsteps).

And from your family's foodstock list I guess you'll be eating English muffins with melted cheese on top?

Sounds pretty good actually...

OMG! When there's a big storm scheduled here, it's the bread, cereal, milk, and chicken soup that go. I mean, not the beef noodle, or cream of broccoli, or any other kind, CHICKEN. I'd think cans of stew would be better. Or, you know, variety?

English muffins? LOL that is so something out of a Douglas Adams novel.
"Shouldn't we put a paper bag over our heads or something?"
"You can if you like."
"Will it help?"
"No."
Bagels have more calories anyway. And fiber, if you get the whole wheat kind.

English muffins.

Huh.

I got nothing, I'm only thinking those things taste pretty bad if not toasted.

Heh. I know. I wish I had my camera so I could have taken some pictures of the empty soup and bread isle. *snerk* This is the most bizarre thing I have ever experienced. And it hasn't even started raining yet!

As a sidenote, peanut butter and canned tuna fish are also good disaster supplies, along with candles. Heck, if you felt like it, you could get a cheap camp stove. Probably meant to be used outdoors though. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-8/qid=1127501316/ref=sr_1_8/602-5249123-1775040?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B0008FV0OC

I always wonder what people do with all of the extra bread they stockpile. I mean, I know that it takes me so long to eat a loaf of bread that I keep my bread in the fridge so it won't get moldy before I can eat it all!

Two years ago in a hurricane, I ended up surviving on Fruit20 - fruit flavored no-calorie water product, because when I went to the store there was no more water for sale.

Flushing the toilet with the bathtub water was pretty cool, though.

Hope you stay safe!

Fondu, anyone?? You can chop up the English muffins and toast them on the flames, then dip.

Good luck! Stay safe!

English muffins are pretty bad untoasted and don't keep well either. Maybe they are akin to Pratchett's dwarf bread - inedible so you never run out and therefore can't be starving. Plus the staler they get the better their offensive capabilities - they're already pretty aerodynamic.

The ramen seems counterintuitive too. If the electricity goes out people can still eat cold soup from a can. But, gnawing on a block of freeze-dried ramen with the "flavor" pack dusted on for taste? That's just wrong.

Growing up, milk and bread always disappeared from the shelves when ice storms threatened (South Carolina). Power was almost assured to go out, so better stock up on perishables. Yep. That there is some strategery. : >

I'm in austin too. It's funny how the grocery stores are running out of WATER.

God I wish are stores were still open in houston... i've been craving peanut butter on saltines.

Stay safe.

Do you have a blowtorch for making the crust on creme brulee? You could melt the cheese with that.

My family has enough food in our garage to survive at least a week. This is after the power's gone down and we've eaten the contents of the TWO refrigerators with packed freezers to beat spoilage. My sister might get twitchy at the lack of milk but I think she'd endure.

Where I live, it's approaching snowstorms that sell out the grocery stores. I remember one time, I got there late and felt like I was wandering through the aisles of communist-era Moscow. Nothing edible was on the shelves.

Oh, get this, Greg was shopping last night and he saw someone carting off thirty pounds of ground beef.

Thirty pounds. OF MEAT. Even if the guy got it cooked before he lost power, I don't think a family of eight could eat that much beef before it turned.

(We have water, bread, peanut butter, apples, honey-roasted peanuts and tuna. Oh, and a whopping big can of pork n' beans that I'm eyeing with distrust. What can I say, our power blips in a middling-bad thunderstorm.)
