ST: TNG - did not remember this, how did I not remember this????

Season 7:
Holy mother of fuck, Dr. Soong built an android based on his wife????? Also, he never told her she was an android. He built her because his wife was killed and she has his wife's memories (from engram scannning????) and she has no idea. What kind of wtf is this?

...and she left him. Okay, then, I am shook and also creeped and also wtf and also touched? and still wtf creeped.

I don't know how I would feel in android-wife's place. I might actually be okay with that. If he'd messed with my memories or personality or body shape or something, that would be a separate issue, but just finding out I was a copy wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, I think.

But then, I am the type of person who would definitely choose to upload my consciousness into some kind of sci-fi future internet a la Zoe from Caprica if my only alternative was death, so... That might be more a question of having my wishes anticipated rather than having my whole identity and world-view overthrown.

You know, I agree.

Thinking about it, I think my dealbreaker is that he didn't tell her what he planned either when she was human--and I think he could have, if I remember correctly--or at least when she awoke as an android*. In that case, it would be more about her than him, and it gave her a choice (aka if she disagreed, not to do it). This felt more exploitative; it was about him, not her.

* I reserve the right to say that if she took it very badly, he would erase the memory of telling her and letting the lie continue. In that case, because that would be in her best interest, if that makes sense. In other words, all possible ways of her choice being respected should be in place.
