I am rewatching Venom and for the life of me, I can't figure out what they thought they were making or if they knew all along it was a romcom.

I thought people were exaggerating, and no, not even a little.

The director states that they were referencing a body sharing scene from All of Me, so definitely making a romcom/black comedy. We generally don't care what TPTB think, but that's still kinda great.

I'm pretty sure they must have intentionally merged romcom into their monster movie. I don't think you can hit this many genre beats without noticing, even if you are doing it to get a humor effect or whatever, and they did release that romcom DVD trailer.

I kind of think they knew? At least, it's not like the romance element is entirely absent from the source comics, especially recent-ish ones (as opposed to very early on, not like "last week"). (I was *thrilled*.)

Apparently it was marketed completely differently for the Chinese market, highlighting those romcom elements.

Unsurprisingly, it did marvelously well there.

I ... THINK they knew, but the studio might not have known? OTOH it could be a total fluke, like Hancock, where a good movie is accidentally made despite all efforts.

It really is the feelgood romcom of the year, tho
