Okay.

I can't be the only one watching the slow meltdown of TWOP over on fandom_wank with a level of hyptonitzed car-wreck fascination, can I? I mean, you think it's over, adn then, boom, new entry. And with links!

I'm not even sure I have an opinion except for, wow.

So. Yeah. Wow.

a must-read

Link snitched from [livejournal.com profile] wrenlet.

Colors in the Dark (To the Choir), by C.M. Decarnin.

What [livejournal.com profile] wrenlet said about it:

a lovely, erudite, roll-around-in-the-pretty-pretty-words comparison of slash to the phenomenon of "women's only" cultures through history. It begs the question, what of men who participate in slash? And I think that's a valid query... but when you get right down to it, women built this, and I don't believe acknowledging that fact pushes slash-loving men aside.

"Who built that building?" "Women." "Who lives there now?" "Anyone who wants to."

She knows how to summarize. Go read.
I won't sing, 'cause me doing it should be a federal offense, so.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TE!

Watch for mosquitoes though.

Birthday present en route. Er, I think.

Bought shoes. Red ones. Yes, that kind of shocked me, too, but they're cute. Don't match anything except denim, but hey. Shoes! Bought egrerious amounts of food to cook in bizarre ways.

And hi to new LJ friends! *waves*

Safe by Elizabeth. The author of the unforgettable (I) Forget, the single creepiest Lex fic in creation, this one introduces Supergirl and yes, it's creepy and sad and disturbing and strangely hot. Read now. Now nownownownow.

Getting Into the Swing of Things by Karen Colohan. Hot PWP hammocky things. Oh yes. Delicious. *fanning self*

Burned by Karen Colohan. And another hot one. Clark is sweetly and concernedly and determinedly Clark, trying to bring back Lex from all that nasty non-passion. And well, hot. Yes.

Choices by rosees. OOh. Mean and hot and strangely believable. At least, now the last few eps make SENSE. A lovely and hot and bittersweet moment in a Ferrari.

One of These Days by chelle. Helen's life as Lex's wife. I can see this. Wonderful view of Helen and her ability to be completely blind to what she doesn't want to see. Or believe.

Kryptobiology by meret. Oh. My. God. I haven't laughed this hard in SO damn long! *still choking* Read it and simply love. Love love love!

I am full of the love today. More later as I am catching up on my reading now.

[livejournal.com profile] selling_out - where Jessica and Co are writing so much good Indy!Verse Clark it is just unreal. If you aren't reading it, you SHOULD be. Happiness! Also, that rare animal, a likeable, in-character Clark. Lovely.

[livejournal.com profile] latxcvi is taking about courtesey in spoilers here. Very highly suggested reading. As someone who is militantly anti-spoiler, but perfectly willing to let everyoen spoil themselves silly, it was a very balanced post. Besides, I've finally--FINALLY!--worked out who and who doesn't get spoiled, so as to very very carefully skim their LJs before reading, just to be safe.

Other Things

Being home, and bored, and kinda sad, because I LIKE work, I am contemplating how I need something to do. Three WiPs are posted and out of the way. Webpage updated. Working on Jessica's Indyverse page, but I need a few more pics to play with. Generally annoying myself with my lack of ability to be entertaining.

Anyone doing anything interesting? *hopeful* I'm stuck at home and I am bored. Bored, bored, bored. Fic, links, anything. ANYTHING here, people.

And if you're really, really bored, email me, as I have this really--well, it's a stupid story idea, but unfortunately, not one I can manage to just, you know, stop writing on. Would like someone's opinion that has never seen it before and never heard about it. *sighs* And yes, before you ask, it looks kind of long. But! Not futurefic. Had no idea current SV would make me want to write if it didn't involve dirtywrongLucasincest.

boring entry #1254634747-3

[livejournal.com profile] blackfall explains...

How To Avoid Being Lynched Or Shunned By Your Friends List
( or, Nine Steps To Being Less Of An Lj Tool)

5. Do not post while intoxicated, unless you have a firm grasp on your psyche. Drunks are funny in person because they fall over spill things on themselves. Poor typing, unfocused thoughts and unrestrained maudlin rambling are not funny. Next time you're six sheets to the wind and think it might be fun to update your journal, go vandalize something or fuck a stranger instead. It's better for everyone this way.

Adore.

*g*

I also started getting mightily nervous when I realized that I *HAVE* devoted two entire entries to the trials and tribulations of sock event horizons and black holes, so I guess my third entry, which was going to detail my theory on the conspiracy between socks, manufacturers, and Reticulan Liver-Eating Alien Overlords, is now trashed.

YOU all will never know of my enlightment on the true reason your sock is missing. Blame [livejournal.com profile] blackfall

Am in training all this week. It's interesting. I like to call it the cliff notes version of How Bureaucracy Works, Really, but the scary part is, my notebook officially has a thousand pages of this. No, I'm not kidding. The computer manual is separate. And to think I may apply for the next up, where I will be learning the stuff the Cliff Notes are based on.

*shudders*

Dearest God. If anyone's violently interested, ask me how many acronyms I now know. I can have entire conversations without actually ever using a single standard English word. Okay, almost. It's a very close thing.

I LISTENED to myself ask a question today, and dear God, I'm speaking the language of bureaucracy. Quite bizarre.

Smallville still annoys me, but [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi did a lovely entry which, while did not completely reconcile me to the fact that the producers seem to be on crack, did act comfortingly indeed.

[livejournal.com profile] bonibaru was talking about SV being overall more disappointing than last season. I'm trying to work out if I believe that or not. Heat, Red, Ryan, Lineage, Insurgence, and Prodigal, actually, for me, DO make up for a lot of stupidity. Rosetta on the scale came out pretty well, though the astrophysics still frustrates me because I'm stupid like that.

So--hmm. I LIKED season one better overall--it was more varied, more fun, cleaner, and kept the plotlines at a somewhat better balance. But when I name my top ten, the six above, adding Hourglass, Jitters, Rogue, and Zero--I come out ahead in season two for individuals. Just this season, they unbalanced with some really bad episodes, some of which had the potential to be great except they just didn't make it work. Whereas season one had some bad eps, but I can cut more slack for a first season.

Eh. See. I already violated rule 6: If you don't think anyone will be interested in a particular entry, don't post it.

Love Blackfall. *hugs*

The site is for people who have had their work and/or their bandwidth stolen by thoughtless thieves. At the heart of the site, it's a project to cut the stealing off at the source: by systematically shutting all of the participating AD sites down for 24 hours on May 19. What better way to hammer home the point about fans stealing from other fans by having the fans shut down their sites. Because we don't have to do what we do - we don't have to provide screencaps, we don't have to post our vids and art so that everyone can see them. This is an opportunity to show the thieves just how empty and dull the 'net would be without all of our contributions to the fannish community.

[livejournal.com profile] bonibaru already mentioned it, but let's get this across fandom. Mark the date on your calendars.

Whoa.

A welcome to [livejournal.com profile] tightropegirl, new and thoughtful denizen of LJland, with some fascinating posts regarding fanfic and original fic, serial numbers, and the art of writing. This journal is a must-read for all of us, be you fan-only, fan-and-pro, or just pro. She gives us perspective. And is also way cool. *g*

I'm easy to make happy here, kay?

[livejournal.com profile] keelywolfe links up to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. Wow. That is--so cool. Thanks for posting that link!

And (thinking) I'll try and finish answering comments tonight, though I'm--cheered? relieved--by the number of people who are speaking out all over LJland, especially those who usually don't. Policing our own borders, public reaction to utter blatant malice, and well--I never thought I'd say this, but if hostile group social pressure is going to be what has to happen to keep people from acting out in ways destructive to fandom--count me in.

I've griped about pack mentality before and probably will again, but the group enforcement of simple rules by the community is something we can no longer treat as a luxury, and I can't put it in the same category. In our fandoms, with our actions, we not only should be examples of good fannish behavior, we should also require at least minimal standards of behavior from others and we SHOULD react when something like this happens. By silence we may not exactly encourage, but nor do we discourage.

From what I've read today in LJland, fandom in general, and the Firefly fandom in specific, is a great deal poorer by the loss of some of the greatest vidders on the net. These people entertained and fascinated many in that fandom and had the potential to entertain in many others. And we've lost that. We've also lost potentials, people who might have chosen to do it themselves, but seeing what's happened, may no longer want to. And they've lost security on the net, which is the most frightening thing of all.

Simple rule breakdown.

Artists on the web should be asked permission before the appropriation and/or alteration of any of their work. And if they say no? Don't do it. Wow, and here I thought this would be hard.

By artists, I define vidders, website creators and maintainers, archivists, graphic manipulators, meta-writers, authors, recappers, critiquers, list and board administrators, and feedbackers, and any and all creators/maintainers of fannish endeavors, should the terms above not cover the particular niche. Those who create and entertain us in any form should not be excluded from basic courtesy and protection. And if we don't want someone outside to do it for us, we'd better damn well do it ourselves.

We're not entitled to their work, we never have been, we never will be. And I don't think any of us want for this to happen again, *keep* happening, or we're right back to the password-protection, hidden lists, and hidden webpages of early fandom--or option two, we're going to have almost nothing at all.
Okay, much territory to cover here.

First, because my LJ, my rules...

Third, thanks to everyone for answering my LJ question regarding multifandomness and LJ.

And have to answer [livejournal.com profile] davissh here. I have no idea when I'm going to get to comments today, I'm running seriously behind, so.

Answering my own question, as posed by user above.

Has LJ led you to be more multifandom/multipairing/more open in your writing and reading tastes? Or just your writing? Or just your reading? Or is it that multifandom/multipairing/more open people were already attracted to LJ for that very multifandom vibe? Chicken or the egg, chicken or the egg, lalala.

Mindfuck Edition

Respire by [livejournal.com profile] martianhousecat. I pimped the LJ version, double pimping the SSA one, finalized and posted. I read--a LOT. I don't get hit like this very often. This hit and it hurt and it made me think. Because Clark's secrets aren't just dangerous in knowing them. They're just as dangerous in the not-knowing, too. Very, very, very highly recommended.

Sunburn by lj user="penelope_z">. When you have a style and you use like a razor to cut, when the creepiness is all in what isn't said, and when the descriptors are what make you shiver--again, these people are the reason I love fanfic. Amazing, horrifying, and so subtle and so blatant at the same time. Penelope does it again and dammit, this is good.

After reading the above? Trust me, you'll NEED these.

Apolgoies and Promies by [livejournal.com profile] tstar78 Oh yes. Happy, lovely, wonderful Lex and Martha chat. Relationships and love and lunch. Totally will make your day bright.

Curator of the Life and Death Museum by Punk AU first seaon, post-Pilot, fascinating Lex and Clark. I can see this so easily and it could have happened. Another wonderful fic by a great author.

That--doesn't even put a dent in my list. *sighs* Got to CATCH UP already.

First off, recs of happiness. *g* Yay yay yay!

Three Fairy Tales of Smallville by the amazing [livejournal.com profile] koimistress Three stories in the style of the "Five Things That Aren't True", with three AUs, each very different from the last. I adored the first, loved the second, but the third creeped me out and whoa, that was good. Read.

To get some of Koi's thoughts on her story, its genesis, etc, go here. Interesting , and damn, she rocks.

The Test by [livejournal.com profile] paperbkryter, missing scene--explains some things about Lex's shirt. *g* This is SO cute.

Untitled Lillian fic by [livejournal.com profile] martianhousecat. Lillian fic is rare as hell, and this one just about makes up for it. Lillian growing up, short and bittersweet. I'd give a LOT for this author to extend this, because this is both extremely good and a fascinating view into Lillian Luthor, before and after marriage.

Incurable by [livejournal.com profile] bexless. Hee! Clark and Lex and poetry! And more than that, but really, it's BEX, you don't need more to want to read. Lovely, per always.

Pretty Pics

Kat sent two of the loveliest covers I've ever seen--one for the Spaces series! I didn't even know anyone READ that in, well--er, forever? And one for Only Sometimes that, frankly, is absolutely gorgeous. Whoa.

*hugs Kat* Absolutely beautiful, chica. Thank you SO much. Dear God, it amazes me what people can do with pictures.

Places to Go

[livejournal.com profile] paperbkryter unveils WB's latest series idea, an amazing look at geriatric Superman and Lex Luthor in the retirement home for the Unusually Powerful.

The pilot features an action packed wheelchair race through the hallways of Shady Oaks as Clark makes off with Lex's dentures in a fit of pique.

*dying on the floor* Well, I'm ALL for this one.

And I read this--days ago? I can't remember, but just--heee! [livejournal.com profile] martianhousecat reveals The Rules for Writing Lex Luthor.

Special attention to these.

6. Thou shalt not have him cry unless he's had a limb removed, relived the death of his mother, or is having a very bad acid trip. Lex Luthor doesn't cry over failed love affairs, he gets even. Over and over and over.

7. Thou shalt not have him utter the word 'can't' in reference to himself. Lex can do anything. Or so he believes. He is also unaware of the meaning of the term 'no'.

*giggling* Oh yes.

I tend to love people who make me spit coffee on my keyboard. This poor, poor keyboard suffers, but you know, for a good cause. Read and enjoy them all.

Other Things

Someone, please, write me Lex/Lucas? Please? Come on. It's only fair. Lex has been slashed with EVERYONE, including some inanimate objects and not a few characters that don't even exist in the same comics continuum. *grins* Okay, he hasn't officially been slashed with Pete Ross yet, but I realy, really tried really hard and surely someone else has gotten around to it. Right? Right?

There was Lucas-half-nakedness (whoo) and tattoos and good hair and some serious, serious issues floating around here. And tension and daddy-issues. And did anyone notice the rainy-Lexness? The story will practically write itself!

*looks puppyish* Come on. Dirty wrongness? Like [livejournal.com profile] bientot said, and I quote, because this is a Very Wise Statement.

Taken from comments on episode in my LJ.

Well, I may be a little prejudiced, but I can't imagine Lex being less than pretty with anyone. And his only-mildly-a-little half-brother (hardly incest at all, when you really think about it) is almost as physically attractive as he is morally dubious.

See? It's barely even actual incest. BARELY. See? She agrees with me! *love* So damn wise. Doncha think?

Yes, that's me, trying to enable anything that moves in my line of sight.

Okay, am going to get some actual editing done, since I won't have time tomorrow.

LJLand is INTERESTING today.

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn metas beautifully in Quit Fucking With Lex! The Grovelfic Rant. *Grins* It rocks. Read the comments. Yes, I participated and enjoyed it. *happy sigh* Love Liv.

[livejournal.com profile] hwmitzy pops up with Ten Little Thoughts on a Show Called Smallville. Read the list. Think about the Lionel/Lana pairing. Giggle hysterically.

Bethy makes me smile.

Now, on Livia's rant.

One of the things that struck me while I was answering some comments was that, while grovelfic annoys me, when I'm not in the right mood for it, I tend to be a lot more annoyed by other kinds of fic to a far greater degree when the characterization is off, which makes me think that a lot could be that readers expectations are coming into a sharp collision with writer intent.

Or basically, readers need to know what they're looking at.

To me, grovelfic is basically the PWP of pain in some instances. Like writing a single sex scene for a fic, or writing a introspective character study, it is a genre all on it's own and can't be judged by the standards of another genre entirely. The demarcation line is blurry sometimes--or a lot, actually--but that holds true for most stories.

You don't open a PWP and expect great character. You open and read it because Clark and Lex (Clark and Chloe, Lex and Chloe, Clark and Whitney, Lex and Whitney, you see a pattern?) are nailing each other and that's what you want to see. Characterizations or other factors can take it from simple PWP kink to a story you might love and treasure, or one that surpasses genre, but that's a different field of kryptonite altogether. I'm perfectly willing to admit I indulge my PWP tendencies with a great deal of frequency, because dammit, they dont' get it on screen and it's my duty to make sure they get it off. Um. Off-SCREEN, that is.

In any case.

Honestly, this could be a personal thing, because I just love SV fic in general, and probably sixty or so percent of the CLex slash that comes through I enjoy, for various reasons including the kink factor or the trainwreck fascination thing. But I also am always aware of WHAT I'm reading. I can't judge every story by Past Grief, Demarcation, Immortality, Mercy, Identical, Prophets of Eden or The Fifth Season (I could actually go on for a LONG time on Fics I Just Adore, but I have a rec page if you wnat to see a larger listing) in terms of plot, style, character, etc. I'm not even sure I would LIKE a constant stream of fics like this (though doesn't it sound like the most ideal fnadom EVER if it happened?), because much as I love engaging my mind and as much as I hold these as among the best the Smallville fandom has achieved, I also like to just GO with it and disengage active thinking and flow along for the ride.

But again, this is kind of something I had to work out for myself in how I choose to read. I'm a compartmentalizer by nature. I can read a fic where Clark is merrily tortured in an underground lab by a truly psychotic Lex Luthor involving pliers and kryptonite saws and enjoy it for what it is--nice, cathartic grovelfic/torturefic/yougettheideahere. I don't expect it to be something it's not and I either like or hate it knowing what its limits are.

Maybe we need to give it an official genre like the PWP. The CGF (cathartic grovel fic)? Er, no. Sounds like a branch of the government.

But anyway. Livia's rant hits some key points in the Lex and Clark discussions and fic that has gone around and is highly recommended for reading and mulling, as are several commenters.

In other news, dirtywrongbizarrefic is refusing to be short and this is getting just ridiculous. *kicks story* Go AWAY.
