Poll. Because they are there and I can't think of a reason not to. Also because I discovered a fascinating fact; I am going to die before I finish this story that was already finished before [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn says "I think you skimmed some of this" which is why it went from a healthy 29K to an unfinished 45K that, due to cleverly deleting what you had before, now requires a rewrite that you suspect will only end with your life. Which is somehow ironic, considering the premise.

...right. Poll! Here!

So if the laptop didn't fuss at me & grind a bit, I would routinely be in the 21-50 range. Well that and if I had the second monitor. 'Cause when I had that, I had lots of different windows/tabs open & several AIM conversations too.

All of which makes my hubby a bit sick. He hates watching me surf the 'net.

121 - I just kept moving stuff I meant to deal with into a bookmark folder and finally dealt with it when I had time again. Every time I opened the folder it attempted to crash my computer. The Youtube tabs were the worst because every time I opened the folder they would all start playing and I'd be hit with a bunch of noise that took forever to stop. Solution: turn off speakers, then open the tabs.

Also, I just checked. My current 'to deal with' folder has 261 bookmarks. I have a feeling that one's going to succeed in crashing my computer when I open it. :)

Regularly I'm probably between ten and twenty at any given time, but sometimes there are a lot of stories or episode reaction posts or something that I want to read, so it can go up to 40 or 50 when that happens. Before I disabled the Tab Mix extension, they would all be in neat rows, so I could see them all at once, too, which is nice.

I regularly have no more open than will fit across the screen without scrolling, which is about nine or ten.

However, I have at times opened up more in order to do something, usually editing. Like, I just a few moments ago had probably 25-30 tags open. The nine I have open right now, which are, at least for the moment, semi-permanent, plus I had just added a bunch of comics to BookMooch and needed to edit the condition fields for all of them, so rather than opening them each up, editing, then moving on, I opened them all, edited, and closed as I finished.

That sort of thing is not unusual for me, but it's always only if they're going to be closed immediately. I can't stand having more than a few open permanently.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-12-17 06:06 am (UTC)
I have two permanent, and three that I open regularly. It's the load time and resources I worry about; Firefox gets huge fast.

The editing thing is a really good idea. I keep not thinking to do that when I'm working on my webpage or editing something online. *makes note*

I start the week reading my flist and opening all the fic written/mentioned/recced into a tab. And then I try to close them all by the end of the day Friday.

If my browser crashes, then I figure if the stories were really all that good, I'll see them recced again.

But then sometimes there are people on my friendslist *squints* who mention badfic. And then by the time I get to that tab, I have forgotten whether it was recced seriously or mockingly - and then I'll also have forgotten which person I should blame for this travesty. Just saying...

The windows have 27, 73, 37, 25, and 4 tabs. For me, that's actually a relatively low number; usually I have at least one window with more than 100 tabs. I've been trying to use delicious more... I have an "unread" folder. but that still doesn't help me with Google Reader and all the tabs that end up being opened as a result... or Google News.

Then there's a separate browser window for each page of LJ that I got behind on (with accompanying tabs) oh, and Facebook and Flickr.

Finally iTunes and MahJong are also open.

I use Safari, where you really don't have to think about how many tabs you have open. My regular number is 10-15, but eBay-browsing can raise it to a hundred at times. Of cource screen capping wouldn't proove this since anything over something like thirty will be hidden from the tab view...

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-12-17 06:39 am (UTC)

I picked 21-50, but that was because I thought you wanted how many I *usually* have open, not the greatest number I've *ever* had open (slight difference there.) I have 31 open right now, and that's about average. Mostly fic and rec pages, a few websites I want to go back to and check out.

Over the years, my cat, Scully, has done many bizarre and horrible things to my computer with inopportune landings on my keyboard from on high, but one of the strangest things she ever did (and I still don't know how she did it) was when I refused to give her any cat treats and went away to the bathroom, and when I got back, it seems she had somehow opened about 800 tabs with her butt in revenge. Just by sitting on my keyboard. No idea what key does that, but she managed it. Since I didn't want to close down and start afresh/lose my legit tabs, I had to close 750+ tabs one at a time. Every one of them was the same Mozilla Firefox Add-on page.

From: [identity profile] thecomfychair.livejournal.com Date: 2008-12-17 06:52 am (UTC)
Right now I have like 20? It has been a slow day on Livejournal. And 10 of those are permatabbed, so I've got 10 against me every time I start, and it just...quickly builds from there.

From: [identity profile] firesprite1105.livejournal.com Date: 2008-12-17 07:01 am (UTC)
I have had so many tabs open that I've crashed the damn browser, and more than once. Sadly, I have no idea whether it was 100+, but I know for sure that it's been over 50! But this works really well for when *&%^$# Time Warner decides to suck, like, say, most of the last 24 hours! If you have tons of fanfic open in tabs, you'll never completely lose your mind without internet access. ;D

From: [identity profile] carnadosa.livejournal.com Date: 2008-12-17 07:03 am (UTC)
I mostly leave it at 15-20, but if I'm checking the WIPs I'm following (which I think is about 95 right now) I definitively hit over 50 (though I tend to only check 2/3s of the list with any sort of regularity). I have a desktop. I can have three adobe products, itunes, word and firefox open and not have too much of a appreciable difference in processing time. If I open Google Earth after that things get a little hairy.)
