seperis | tuesday has never been quite so exciting

During a break outside, two girls one cup curiosity suddenly manifested in the conversation beside me; my knee-jerk reaction of "Oh my God don't look" suddenly led to meme jokes.

Now, here's the thing--being part of and recognizing internet culture does not, as a rule, lead to understanding how much it's invaded my vocabulary until everyone except one guy (whom earlier this year I'd heard talking about DragonCon) had gone and I realized I hadn't spoken a word of understandable English in about fifteen minutes.

However, this is unexplored territory. As much as IRL names are sacrosanct trusts on the internetz, it occurred to me the same holds true for online names IRL, which is an entirely different kind of privacy issue.

There's also the fact I suspect he's SASS or at least a 4chan lurker; he also could be conservative. I'm not sure which one bothers me more. However, did point him toward the NYTimes article on internet trolls which he didn't seem to know about, so this argues maybe not so much.

Anyone who is going to be watching the returns and wants to chat, I'll be around after 9 PM CST for group obsessing.

Oh, god, so true. I hate telling RL friends my online screen name (and, in fact, actively try not to do so). Like, I don't mind letting them know that I know about the internet, but most of my friends are guys so I don't talk to them about fandom (I have a grand total of three RL friends, all female, who know my ElJay and fandom interests).

PS: SASS and regular 4chan lurkers are losers. :(

Though, last weekend while bussing somewhere for dinner with friends, we ended up playing 20 questions (with no question limit, hah). Except that we got bored of regular stuff (we started with CS terms, like ternary and recursion), so B chose "pedophiles", and then it somehow degenerated into an internetfest -- S chose Tacgnol and "A cat is fine too", and then I chose guro because at some point someone else had started in on the "really weird porn" category...

Yeah. Yeeeeah.

it is a little infectious, isn't it? And not just "internet culture" monolithically - many of my friends who would get a 4chan or icanhaz reference, don't always know what I'm talking about, meme-wise - and vice versa (they certainly knew what rickrolling was before I did.)

realized yesterday, about fifteen minutes after I'd done it, that calling my friend Mike "the prettiest princess" in our group of friends might not mean the same thing to him that it does to me. :) Luckily he and his wife agreed that it was an appropriate descriptor, even if they didn't have this image (http://pentapus.livejournal.com/14571.html) in mind.
