Life, Work, Fire

I came into work today with no expectation that anything in my remaining tests would be fixed. I was pleasantly surprised to realize I hadn't overestimated the situation--in other words, while no, it's not better, wow, it hasn't gotten worse!

I was a fool.

Two hours into this morning, I stood over Thomas in his office telling him "KILL IT WITH FIRE", which only sounds like an overreaction if you haven't been testing the same program fix about ten times and no one appreciates when you explain that this job has become the definition of insanity--to wit, doing the exact same thing over and over with the idea that the results will change. I think kill it with fire gets the idea across nicely.

Later, my boss eyed me warily. I have attempted to tell him that should I need to light my hard drive on fire, a.) I need more than a lighter; I need to call my son and have him mix me up a good accelerant out of common household chemicals and b.) I will take it outside, as one does.

This will end well, one way or another.

Anthrax watch has ended; I am sure we can all breathe easier knowing whatever that mysterious powder was in the bathroom it was either a.) not anthrax or b.) was anthrax but badly manufactured.

When written out, my job sounds far more interesting than it actually is.

Thoughts from VVC

During the panel on the expansion of vids and whatnot, the idea was broached that up to now, at the intersection of vidding and writing, it tends to be writing --> inspires vid. I was curious--and still am curious--if anyone would be interested in doing the opposite, or rather, pick out a vid, any vid, and write a story based on it. Not merely the constructed reality ones (though wow, could that go some interesting places) but also thematic or mood specific or whatever floats your boat. I'm curious if the writing would end up as much commentary--ie "this is how I see this"--as fic. Would anyone want to participate in that? I mean, basically, you will watch a vid and then write a fic about it. I mean, it's a hard job, but I'm pretty sure most of us would bite the bullet and carefully examine Dean's ass frame by frame, you know?

?

Yeah, this part is just because I wanted a third section.

Yes, but do we get enough good shots of Dean's ass to work with? He wears those untucked shirts and jackets, which have merits of their own, no doubt. But if you have screencaps, I will gird myself for the task.

Seriously, I think this is a fascinating idea, and I'd definitely be willing to try to write fic for vids.

Perception of seeing Dean's ass can count as the reality of seeing Dean's ass, even if the ass itself is not necessarily, as far as source goes, Dean's ass, but a constructed ass.

A metaphorical ass, even.

And whee! This is not an untenable idea!

I think it's a great idea; I've been influenced by fan art more than once and I'd love to try it with vids.

*nod* Me too, though rarely so directly that I can cite backward. I think it would be interesting to see what we *would* make of something either thematic or even non-linear or multiple source.

Writing a story based on a vid could be cool. And in any case, there are definitely some vids that have changed how I look at the source text. (I saw here's luck's "People Get Ready" before I ever watched Heroes, and I still like the show in her vid better.)

*g* I've had that reaction with certain vids compared to source. SV for example. *sighs*

[livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow did a challenge last fall where people picked a vid to write a story about. There wasn't a lot of participation, but I don't remember seeing it pimped far and wide either.

Someone mentioned they thought it had been done but weren't sure if it was specific fandom or what. Excellent.

Yes!

I've had a story in my head for [livejournal.com profile] heresluck's "Out Here" vid since the first time I watched it. The narrative I saw in it was so strong and so compelling that I could write the story easily IF I were more versed in Due South canon. That's on my list of Things To Do: Go back and re-watch the show, since I haven't seen it since it first aired.

Anyway. The twist to this is that the narrative that took over my brain is a complete misinterpretation of the narrative that's actually IN the vid, which I only realized after the first 25 or so times I watched it. I don't even know what to do with that. It's... interesting?

I also earn a great, big fail for not telling [livejournal.com profile] heresluck this, in feedback. I'm just never sure what to say. "Hello, I *love* the vid I *thought* you made. Oh, and also, the one you actually did."

I got an idea for a John/Ronon fic after watching [livejournal.com profile] sol_se's vid "Red Moon". The vid made me *see* the 'ship in a way I hadn't before. Still haven't written the fic, but it's fairly high on my list of things I want to do this year.

Huh. I'd be interested in that writing a story off a vid thing.

I would be interested to know not just where the intersection of inspiration is but the intersection of what ideas get put into which form, for people who both vid and write.

There's a vid I will make someday, if I can ever face the damn source long enough, that is basically me sharing my fanwank that makes the second and third Star Wars prequels -- okay, not less hideous because nothing can do that, but at least make *sense*. (The songcall would be Hey There, Delilah. Yes, the creepy stalker song. As pretty as it is musically, I personally find it as creepy or creepier than Every Breath You Take and that's saying something.)

The thing that's interesting to me is that I think it would probably be *easier* to write it as the vid involves an unreliable narrator and I think that it is probably easier to get everything across in writing, but I don't think it would be as *good* or nearly as effective.

That's a totally neat idea about the fic/vids exchange. I just finished doing a vid for [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang, it'd be interesting to see it in reverse.

I can't write, but I'd offer my vids up to have fic written about...

From: [identity profile] counteragent.livejournal.com Date: 2008-08-23 10:37 pm (UTC)
I'm all for a reverse fic challenge! I don't write, but I'd beta. And if anyone needed help "reading" a vid, i'd be happy to help.
