the comms you keep

Many Communities, Little Time

[livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang is still recruiting for het and alternate slash writers and artists. If you've been mulling your Damn Big SGA novel or thinking on some Damn Big SGA Art and think, I totally want to try! You should. Really.

....I still have no idea what to do for Big Bang. I mean, I have like, ten ideas, but two of them are exhausting and one is--I don't know. And [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches keeps saying "SOULBOND YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO" and you know what? I totally do. I just don't know how well that goes with large scale massacres. I need to think. I don't want to rewrite Jus Ad Bellum, but--I'm not sure that story said everything I wanted to say about prejudice and choice, because I didn't know then what I know now about it.

*****

[livejournal.com profile] shakydismount has been started by [livejournal.com profile] cereta, and I don't even know how to describe my utter joy at the idea of a comm for fannish feminist parents. Have you people seen some of the other lj parenting comms? Oh my God, no. But this? This is perfect. Pulled from the intro post in [livejournal.com profile] cereta's lj:

[livejournal.com profile] shakydismount is a community for fannish feminist (mostly) parents. The purpose of this community is for fans to discuss media, books, comics, and other sundries with an eye not just towards gender representation, but also with an eye towards how the depictions of gender and gender roles affect our daughters and sons. While aimed primarily at parents, stepparents, and those who are or have been actively involved in raising children, the community welcomes aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents, cousins, teachers, or just anyone concerned about how the next generation of fans is seeing (or not seeing) women and men depicted in our beloved sources.

[livejournal.com profile] shakydismount is a place to:

* Share books, tv shows, movies, comics, etc that you see as particularly positive in their depiction of gender and gender roles.
* Seek recommendations for books, movies, etc.
* Share outrage over some particularly problematic depiction (or lack thereof) of gender and gender roles.
* Discuss strategies for instilling awareness of these issues in our kids.

More info can be found in the userinfo of the comm--if you're interested, check it out. If you're curious, also check it out. This is an excellent and needed resource, I think, for fanparents. I'm literally bouncing a little in anticipation.

...seriously. A comm for fanparents. Awesome. And so much the time has come.

It appeals to me both as a parent raising a boy and as the aunt of two girls and future aunt of another boy. I want someplace to double check what I'm teaching him (and them), and think seriously about what I say before I say it.

I love this.

Babies

*dies a really lot*

I think there have been some comms for fannish parents before, but we really wanted one for this specific issue. Because man, it's hard, loving all these shows and yet wincing at what your kid might be thinking from them.
My niece is adorable.

Taking controversial stands today, eh?
*grins* I have a weakness for babies. Triply so when I'm blood related but don't have to care for them 24/7.
*points to icon*

Speaking of which, I've been meaning to say, this icon of yours is SUPER GORGEOUS. I don't know if I will ever be over my fictional ex-boyfriend if he insists on being this hot all the time!
I was going to ask who the baby was. I love the expression.

John will never stop making me stare blankly and wish this were Battlestar Galactica and there are many, many copies. Many.

::drive-by happy preen from the maker of the mentioned icon::

Not that the baby in yours doesn't have the PERFECT expression for any and all fandom discussions.
Nice work!

I like to think that wee Mr. Finn is just practicing until he learns how to type (he already knows how to bang on a keyboard with glee, boy howdy, does he!).

I know. I know. I mean, there were hints of that in your SPN crossover, big big hints that made me want a) a sequel or b) missing scenes so we could see more of John and Rodney's huge, obsessive, turning-people-to-ash doomed love. So you know I am behind you 100% if you do something like that again. :D

I'll be here if you ever need someone to cheerlead you along.

jus ad bellum is one of like a handful of different stories in all my fandoms I regularly reread (like Ghosts and Lovers and ...) It's just marvelous, though I still haven't forgiven you for the ending :)

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2008-03-11 10:39 pm (UTC)
I wrote a couple of extendeds later, but the ending, it felt right. Either she went back to the other universe or she died for something she believed in more than her own life; everything I tried took something away from it. So much of my fic was about that final choice you make and what it makes you, even if I don't know it when I write it, but this one and Dust both were the opposite sides of the same coin, deciding who you are and making the choice to live by it. It's odd how differently they worked out, but in a weird way the same. Lex was as true to himself as Rogue was in the end, in what they were, they could be, and what they wanted to be. I'm not sure I could put Sheppard in that position in canon--he does know himself. It's other people he's not so sure of. Rodney now--now that would be interesting to see, and I'm not sure how far he can define himself without his benchmarks even now.

Though I do prefer that they didn't find her body, and that she went home. Somehow. *G*

Oh yes. I agree on Sheppard so much!

Then again, if you'd put him through the wringer enough? Or rather, the trusting others thing, yes!!!

And yes, aesthetically and structurally I got it. But emotionally? *cries*

Soulbonds? Dystopias? Healing sex? Prejudice and choice? Large-scale massacres? Political fic?

*swoons*

Yes I'm swooning at all of them! I'm easy when it comes to your fic.*g*

I have a concepty thing that insists on being written, but a)it really needs that thing called, what is it again, oh right, PLOT; and hm, yeah, really, a).:)

Hesitantly dipping a toe in here (hi Jenn! Love your stories, only owe you about forty-seven pieces of feedback. Moving swiftly on...) but when you say 'soulbond' and 'I just don't know how well that goes with large scale massacres', well, I'm not seeing the disjunct. I mean, yes, maybe the passionate Crimes-Against-Humanity love is running away with me here but those two just ... go together. Like puppies 'n' kittens! Only more with the blood and screaming.

The soulbond wouldn't have to *cause* the massacres, after all. ('Scuse me, just have to wander off for a CAH moment now.)
