So this one surprised me, because I opened it as a re-read and apparently missed the entire last section the first time around.

Intimacy of Man by [livejournal.com profile] samdonne, Sheppard and a history of sex in five sections. It's funny and powerful and interesting, and I have things I've vaguely wanted to say about how they hook together, but I mostly got hit slightly harder than sideways by the last section that was completely unexpected, and also, apparently, the people of the forest moon of Endor are fanfic writers.

You really, really, really need to read this right now. Sheppard/m, Sheppard/f, Sheppard/m/f, Sheppard/Atlantis and the last is unclassifiable and deeply, deeply hilarious.

No, really. This story, right now. I have no words for how deeply I feel we all connect with the wonderful people of Endor. And the Sheppard/Atlantis is startlingly raw and painful--I expected it, but it was still a surprise.

Frankly, I wondered how many readers would get the meta-ness of the final section. *g* Sometimes fandom is rather less introspective than one wishes it were....

*grins* Which part? The catalytical reasoning or porn-as-retelling? That it makes a good metaphor for fandom is deeply true, but it also makes an interesting metaphor for why we do it, in some ways.

This is one of the few times I really *wish* for a meta community for reading and thinking on fanfic. While lit class left me cold, fanfic doesn't in the search for not only what the writer was saying, but what we took away from it. In fandom more than anywhere else, the latter is so powerful and varied in that.

Plus, right now, I'm contemplating Endorian versions of Trinity and penance blowjobs and laughing my ass off at the wonder of it. Just--the utter sheer glee.

This is one of the few times I really *wish* for a meta community for reading and thinking on fanfic.

Once, long long ago, I created [livejournal.com profile] meta_salon for this very purpose. Then I blanked on ideas for meta to get things going. Then meta_salon got caught in the backwash of a metablog wank thingee (f_w seemed to think that m_s was a wholy owned subsidiary of mb or something?!). And things kinda died out; occasionally somebody will make a post there. Very occasionally, like once a year. *sigh*

Of course, if a popular LJ-er were to post a fun discussion topic, things might perk up. ::innocent look:: I'm just sayin'....

ps Happy happy happy birthday birthday birthday!!! (belatedly)

I've not had anyone pick up on all the meta elements; it's mostly been read as parody. But like Jenn says, this isn't lit class. ;)
