It's midnight, so my lj will let me post.

I feel like an infomercial. God.

Waffles

For those new, Waffles is my rabbit.

Due to drama and circumstance, Waffles has been restricted to his cage or his playpen outside. It's a long story that involves pneumonia and etc. Anyway, I took him out today, put him in his playpen, spread out some cut grass for him to chew or destroy, whichever, some water, his green castle, and left him to do his thing.

I came out about an hour later to see the pen kind of bent, and the dog staring at something on the ground.

Wait. I *remember* this.

Anyway, here is what has to hae happened. Dog got into pen, took out rabbit (I seriously have no idea how else it could have happened--the rabbit does not have wings and the pen is now permanetly closed on all sides). Chased rabbit. Rabbit played dead.

My week, in other words, just about almost got even worse.

Ran to rescue, cuddled him for about an hour, which was nice, since Waffles kind of hates me and hates life. Then after cuddling adn generally acting loving, he bit me lovingly in the stomach and stared up at me until I took him, with all due ceremony, back to his cage. He nodded thoughtfully and promptly returned to eating his apple.

I really need a pet that likes me. Oh, wait, I have Thumper.

No, I am talking about the cactus-rabbit, not the stuffed rabbit. Yes, I know. I know.

I--he came to me in a box. It's hard to explain. But I love him. And sadly, he does beat Waffles for cuddliness.

Fandom Notes

Collected from everywhere. Like I said. Informercial. But after tomorrow, hopefully one with good hair. As I will get my hair recolored.

Posted by [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth today:

Now, for the update: we have mostly hammered out the structure of the organization and are lining up legal help. On Monday, I will be posting a couple of long and complicated posts (sorry!) outlining the structure and recruiting specifically for the first board and committee chairs. I would ask all of you to please try and invite as many people as you can to join
this community from your own circles, especially if you don't see a lot of representative people on our membership list yet, and also to forward those posts to any appropriate fannish mailing lists that you might be on, or to other fannish people who might not be on LJ. We've gotten a lot of generous offers of help in comments both to the original post and many of the posts here. I haven't had time to reply to all of these, but if that includes you, THANK YOU, and rest assured we will soon be showing up on your doorstep hat in hand. :D

The post collecting volunteers will be up shortly, as will the summary post. If you did not post on the original thread and would like to volunteer, you can drop emyrys a note to be added.

Volunteer post is here.

If you haven't joined, yes, I'll say it, go do so. Our archive. I mean, without you? The rest of us might vote to do blue text on a pink background*. Do you want to be responsible for that while reading your Methos/Green Lantern crossover porn? Do you?

(*this is for dramatic effect. I don't think anyone there is actually evil.)

Please, feel free to spread the word.

II. [livejournal.com profile] thecaelum asked me to post this:

I don't have the energy or the focus right now to make [livejournal.com profile] canon_sidekicks or [livejournal.com profile] social_meta into the kinds of communities that I know they can be. These are both good ideas, and self-sustaining communities that need just a little attention to become relevant, useful, and vibrant little corners of fandom.

Because I'm lacking in what is necessary to run these communities, I'd like to give them over to someone or someones who would be willing to take these ideas and run with them. No strings, no catches. Full ownership of the community would be yours, to do with as you see fit. I would not be involved at all.

If any of you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested, please let me know.

Please drop a line at to [livejournal.com profile] thecaelum at mizrudy at yahoo.com or in her post here.

III. Strikethrough 2007

For those still mulling Strikethrough 2007 (I seriously love this name), [livejournal.com profile] stewardess has posted "How SixApart's Greed Allied Them with Neo-Nazis". This offers an intriguing possibility on what led to the purge that led to Fandom Harmony We Are All One. Interesting and cynical implications for what we can expect in the future.

IV. [livejournal.com profile] 3daychallenge

[livejournal.com profile] amireal has a new challenge here.

Topic: International 'What did you say about my mama?' Day Challenge!

This special edition DVD challege is a week-long event! And by that I mean, a week of porn. Please. Bring us porn.

Random

I was curious, so I went looking for livejournal statistics. Because we all know that my favorite thing in the world is random math.

Pulled from Livejournal Statistics.

How many users, and how many of those are active?

Total accounts: 13056367
... active in some way: 1783402
... that have ever updated: 8237102
... updating in last 30 days: 1017235
... updating in last 7 days: 585470
... updating in past 24 hours: 182223

I'd commit many horrible acts to get a breakdown between user accounts and commmunity accounts, and types of accounts (permanent, paid, early adopter, plus, and basic).

*wistful* I'd get to play with numbers for weeks.

ETA contributed by [livejournal.com profile] shusu - [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick does math.

Ooohhh yeah. That's what I'm talking about.

Okay, done. LJ, it is after midnight. Plz post. Kthx.

[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<i\>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

So the rabbit's okay, how's his owner? God knows my cats recover faster than <i>I<i\> do when there's mishaps- I still get twitchy when remembering an incident involving the youngest cat, a foxtail (pointy seedpod thing) and his left eye. Pooter was lucky, the only damage was to my equilibrium.

Yes, my cats are The Pooter (formerly Ajax, since he'd done battle with every chair leg in the house by the end of his first week; they kicked his ass, btw) and Jo/Jojo/Jo-cat/BitchKitty. We lost Spazmo/Spaz/TurdbuttCat two years ago. RIP, buddy. We still see you in every black cat that crosses our path. ::leaves lasagna and ham offerings::

Maths continued with disclaimer- Math is not my strong point, pls feel free to comment if I am making up ridiculous things.

Do we know if they were actually making money with just what users pay for (without the advertising)? Or enough money to be more than self-sustaining?

I'm pretty sure I believe fandom contributes more than other users, but where is the big money? Is it from this small percentage of users or is it from advertising to a large number of users.

So let's see without any advertising and without taking into accout permanent accounts.

A paid account is 20$ a year. (9,198 - see above- X 20 = roughly 200.000)
1.6% (see above) of 13.000.000=208.000(208.000 X 2O$ =4.160.000$) -

4M$ on paid accounts alone - that's impressive
200.000$ is about 5% of that 4M - not bad

But what is the advertising income they have??????? Is it more important or less important than that income?

From: [identity profile] shusu.livejournal.com Date: 2007-06-02 10:19 am (UTC)
Well it's not a complete answer, because it's hard to say how a corporate body works unless you're in it (like... if my hand scratches my butt, I can say my whole body benefits but what about the hand?). But this is how things looked when 6A acquired LJ:

headcount of paid

From: [identity profile] shusu.livejournal.com Date: 2007-06-02 10:28 am (UTC)
This is less statistically solid than a random sampling, btw. But still significant:

http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=993886&mode=enter

From: [identity profile] iphi1.livejournal.com Date: 2007-06-02 10:43 am (UTC)
thanks! that was interesting.

So I should revise-

1.6% of current active accounts = 160,000 X 20 = 3.2M$
200.000$ is about 6.25% of 3.2M% (even better)

However, again, this means nothing if we don't know ad revenue.

From: [identity profile] shusu.livejournal.com Date: 2007-06-02 10:58 am (UTC)
Another gray area is how much our activity and presence generates ad revenue.

It's kind of like the Matrix, where all those warm bodies produce energy.....

Oh man, thank God Waffles is okay!

That post from [livejournal.com profile] stewardess was very interesting. I would love to see LJ's business plan. Do they at the moment make more money from their users or from advertising? Who are the possible investors they target? What is the competition planning (e.g. GreatestJournal)? And most importantly - What are the new markets out there to explore if not fen? Who are they really targeting?

If LJuser is mostly fen then to me the picture is quite simple, even with an IPO.
If LJuser = Mostly fen
Insult Fen = less users
(I believe that if some key persons and communities leave, LJ could bleed out very quickly, as there are alternatives available)
Less users = less money, whether it is from individual users or from advertising. The same is true for the IPO, less users = less attractive for investors.

If they have done their market research, they should know who their primary users are. If it's fandom, I don't think investors will care about the contents, just about the numbers. I don't know if it is fandom, I would kill for a good way to find out.

Glad to hear that Waffles is okay, and from my experience (admittedly not with rabbits but with my rats who aren't *too* keen on being cuddled either) there's still hope for more cuddles once they become elderly. I don't mean that they can't really fight you anymore once they're getting infirm (though that is true too, but you can't be really happy about it at that point), but even before that, they seem to get more mellow with age and tolerant of cuddles. I mean, by now my oldest rat Ben even comes to me to snuggle and groom me, even though he employed escape & evade tactics whenever I tried the cuddling thing while he was young.

Hey, thanks. :D It's so hard to stumble into other fandoms to get the word out effectively, so I really appreciate it. I've been in SGA fandom for like two months and only as a lurker, really, so I feel shy.

How twisted is it to know your rabbit is okay when it bites you on the stomach? [strenuously not looking at the clawmarks on own arm from the post Claw Clip Incident Cuddle session.]

[livejournal.com profile] stewardess makes some very astute observations.

Math makes my eyes cross, but those are some verrry interesting computations here in the comments and over at [livejournal.com profile] twisted_chick's journal. I really, really want every fan to go to basic status over this, now. Okay, I did before, but between the IPO thing and the math, I feel less like a histrionic freakshow now.

Also...

Have you caught the expanded version, now with more links! and detail! at Greatestjournal? The distributed denial of service that is reducing LJ to tattered tin cans off and on for the last three days triggered it:

From: [identity profile] giogio.livejournal.com Date: 2007-06-02 03:37 pm (UTC)
If Six Apart want to go public, they're going to be a while. I did a quick check of SEC filings and this (http://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001306246&owner=include&count=40) is Six Apart's rather sparse contribution (assuming this is the same Six Apart--the address doesn't match their filing (http://kepler.ss.ca.gov/corpdata/ShowAllList?QueryCorpNumber=C2536475) with the State of California, but the name is a match, and the state doesn't allow the same registration name for 2 corporations afaik). Nowhere near the amount of financial info that would usually be filed well in advance of an IPO, and the last filing was more than a year ago, suggesting that they're not really actively pursuing going public at this time. Similarly, their website lacks any kind of investor information (quarterly financials, annual reports, corporate bylaws, etc.) you would expect to see from a company planning to go public.

Hi! I just got done spending most of today reading a ton of fic off of your SGA rec list that was given to me by someone else. I just wanted to say great job on the list! Also your summery for Planet Megalodon Wraith Defense Force by Pentapus was wonderful! I live in New Braunfels so it was very odd to see Schlitterbaun suddenly mentioned on a SGA fic rec list, but I had to read it right away, because if it is as good as Schlitterbaun then it has to be great...and it was!

On fandomcounts - I've just spent a few minutes poking through my flist, and of the first five active-account fannish people I checked on, only one is a member of fandomcounts. I'm wondering what this means as far as the total number of people who are on LJ primarily for fannishness is concerned. Do you have any sense of this?

Oh, poor Waffles! So glad he was okay!

And I tend to zone out when I see numbers (unless my money or grades are involved), but I think I got the point that fandom is quite potential a large enough chunk of the LJ financial underpinnings to make management sit up and take notice if we demonstrate it to them. But I don't wanna give up my icons to help make the point.
