Organizing del.icio.us tags has to be the equivalent of organizing your pantry in alphabetical order. I mean, I'm like, refining tags, staring at them to see if they should be more detailed or less detailed or--something.

Currently.

*thoughtful*

Part of it is to jog my memory, part of it is organization, but most of it is this weird, weird glee. Siren-dean! Own tag! mckay-genderswitch! own tag! Wait, in one the descriptor is first, then the name, in the other, the name is first! Must fix! MUST MAKE IT PERFECT!

Seriously. This is like OCD level stuff. God this is fun.

Please tell me everyone else does this. Lie if you have to.

*laughs* I do it too. (I'm needfire on del.icio.us).

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 07:24 pm (UTC)
It's *fun*. And all--like, I'm always thinking, how do I make *sure* this is accurate? Really accurate? And easy to read? AND COVERS EVERY POSSIBLE VARIATION EVER.

Uh ... yeah ... sure ... I do this too ...

*backs away from the crazy person* :-)

Actually, I've no real clue what del.icio.us is but now that I've seen your tag list I'm gonna have to go find out! Are you *trying* to make sure I never have time to find a job??? :-)

oooh. http://del.icio.us. It's a bookmarking site, so you can store your bookmarks there--WITH TAGS! TAGS!

It is like chocolate. Really good chocolate.

*whispers* I admit it, I do it too. It's an addiction. I don't know why. Though most of my tags are for recipes, because I love food.

Hey, you know, the bundle feature is really useful. You could create a bundle called "authors" or "fandom" and then just stick all the tags under those--they're like folders. Very useful.

(I'm faitel on del.icio.us. Though I haven't really gotten around to organizing all my fandom stuff yet, so they're all just strewn wildly about.)

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 07:37 pm (UTC)
OOh, I was wondering what the bundles were! thank you!

I don't refine my delicious tags much.

But I've been trying to tag and retag all my lj posts ever since they added the tag feature.

And I spent *years* refining the tags on the database-driven index of my personal fanfic stash. I think I've finally got them to the point where they're practically perfect.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 07:45 pm (UTC)
So much *fun*. *grins* You have a database for your fanfic stash? That is *awesome*.

Yes. I am a programming geek with OCD. *g*

I've thought about sharing the code, but it has to be run on a server with php installed. It would require actual customer support for most people. :-/

I haven't even gotten to adding tags about content! But it's so fun to tag. :D I don't have 'author-' in front of my author tags though, since i bundle them together. :D

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 07:51 pm (UTC)
I am so looking forward to testing the bundling. So. Much.

From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 08:15 pm (UTC)
Bundling is AWESOME. All tagging systems should have file directories!

(You're like me, aren't you. Walking into Office Depot or The Container Store or getting a catalog from Hold Everything or Solutions is just heaven... THINGS! THINGS TO PUT OTHER THINGS IN! WITH LABELS!)

Now I feel all ashamed. My account is currently looking like my sock drawer -- a lot of stuff tossed in with a cursory attempt at organization (i.e., they've got a tag), but really just chaotic and I'm always surprised by what I find in there when I do a straight perusal of the list.

And, hey, I've got double tags on your list! :)

I have an account, but I haven't added anything yet. I'm afraid that once I start transferring bookmarks (hell, I've got eight (8) folders with 350 SGA fics each in my memories already), I won't be able to stop.

Oh, yes. I need to retag! I do not have author tags, and I think I should, and --*flails* yes. I have a very rudimentary tagging system in place, but as soon as I get my website up to date, I am redoing my del.icio.us tags and they will be glorious, Jenn, GLORIOUS.

(My spice cabinet is not in alphabetical order, but it *is* sorted into several groups by function. As are the contents of my freezer. I might be just a touch obsessive.)

I haven't added much fannish content at ALL because I am afraid I would never ever stop. Ever.

I can't get on LJ at work, so the closest I can get to fic is being on del.icio.us. ALL DAY. Sometimes I refine my tags, sometimes I just search for whatever I'm craving and then sigh over the results because I can't GET to them. (This is not painting me in a good light, is it?)

I've seen a few others use the author-xxxx format, but when you start to have upwards of five hundred authors? a little wearisome, and not so many others use it. If you're into the social aspect.

I'll regularly repost links I find on sgastoryfinders, because there's always an interesting category to add that maybe I didn't think of the first, second or third time around.

From: [identity profile] elsmoka.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 10:18 pm (UTC)
I did re-order my tags but then I am not sure about some of mine. Like I have a tag for fandoms SV or SPN for example. But when I tag something as RPS do I add the fandom it's from? Or not? I could spend hours musing over the tags and never be satisfied....

From: [identity profile] cetpar.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 10:51 pm (UTC)
But when I tag something as RPS do I add the fandom it's from?

I do. Mainly becaouse then I can use the 'related tag' feature that comes up to search by fandom within RPS to find things faster. I love the tag system!

I could spend hours musing over the tags and never be satisfied....

Yeah. I refuse to look too closely at my tags right now. Otherwise I'd reorganize tags and not study. Of course, right now I'm on LJ instead of studying. . .

From: [identity profile] elsmoka.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 10:56 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I do add the fandom, too. Sadly I didn't do that from the beginning. But as you said, if I think about that too much right now it would make me dive into my tags for hours and there are more important things. :)

I discovered del.icio.us just as I was getting into SGA, so mine is about 65% SGA fic. I love the bundles though. So useful! I don't need to reorder my tags so much as I need to fix the notes for a lot of the fics I have tagged. I was rather slapdash about that when I first started.

From: [identity profile] chasethecat.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 10:51 pm (UTC)
Oh, man. My problem is that I keep thinking of new category tags I should add, or refine, or whatever, but I already have *hundreds* of fics tagged. So I'm going to have to go back through all of them and re-tag so they're all pretty.

From: [identity profile] cold-poet.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-23 10:55 pm (UTC)
I'm in the process of doing it myself, right now. I am SO OCD about my tags it's not even funny. But I hate not being able to find things and I LOVE to cross-reference.

Hell I was thrilled to see this post, I immeadiately though "Yaye! For I am not the ONLY ONE!"

From: [personal profile] ratcreature Date: 2007-02-23 11:41 pm (UTC)
Bah, you don't even have your tags bundled yet to keep track of them. That's nowhere near OCD yet. See, I sometimes get twitchy because I'm not consistent wrt to first or lastname usage when combining different descriptor and name or in different pairings... Also you know, I have a tag in my LJ called "indexing" to easily find the posts in which I ramble about indexing stuff.

From: [identity profile] thepouncer.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-24 01:05 am (UTC)
Damn you. I'm reorganizing my bookmarks RIGHT NOW.

From: [identity profile] daydreamer.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-24 01:40 am (UTC)
My tags are kind of haphazard, but I'm fanatical about finding the absolute perfect quote to use as the description, so links stay under "tagthis" for weeks while I reread and try to decide. Also, last night I added "desertedisland" for the 10 fics I would keep with me if I were stranded indefinitely, because, y'know. You never know when that will come in handy?

From: [identity profile] volari.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-24 03:52 am (UTC)
You should see my bookmarks. One day I'll get around to getting a delicio, just because that'd be easier, and I'll already have all my tags. Oh! And folders on the computer! With multiple layers of sub-folders!

From: [identity profile] djinanna.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-24 06:21 am (UTC)
I have had a del.icio.us account for, like, a couple years.

I'm afraid to start actually posting links there for fear of getting into the same exact OCD-level labeling frenzy.

Don't even ask what I've been doing with the files and shortcuts on my hard drive the past few day. Or the grabby-flaily hands I've been making at my Firefox bookmarks.

My LJ tags are ... I've gone off LJ tags because any given tag seems to have an upper limit of 100 tagged items, so they've been sort of abandoned.

And we will not even talk about my LJ memories, okay? Nothing to see there, miss, just move along.

From: [identity profile] luthien.livejournal.com Date: 2007-02-24 06:39 am (UTC)
I used to write hierarchical classification schemes for a living. This is both a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to organising tags. *g*

*after my computer froze up, I come to comment.

My tags tend to be kept to one or two words, just so I can keep up with them easier. However I do use the bundle feature quiet liberally. Which makes it easier for me to find. YMMV.
