Hey, is anyone recapping/reviewing House? Send me to people.

So far, I've got [livejournal.com profile] shrift, [livejournal.com profile] serrico, and [livejournal.com profile] sisabet for commentary and plot points, and [livejournal.com profile] thete1 had some great thoughts on many of the eps. I just feel this insane need to run about and read, like, a billion reactions/thoughts.

Was about to say "will whore for House" when I realized, wow, I'm actually being literal there. God, this show makes me happy.

I do a 'reaction as I watch' thing - I don't analyse so much as a squee ;D Of course I won't be able to see the latest ep until tonight...sigh.

Ooh! And i read those too. i jsut didn't see them yet. Which is logical, as you have not seen it yet.

Could you give me a time you'll be posting? *checks watch eagerly*

This is ridiculous. I am *so excited* about this show. *happy twirling*

Hehehe. Um, it depends what time they let me out of work. Definitely by 8pm my time.

I know [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen, [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh and [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza have been discussing House pretty regularly in their journals. See this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tzikeh/171849.html) particularly interesting post on Sexism with regard the the show.

That was an interesting post. My ability to spot sexism is--well. *frowns*. I'm not good at it. so that post was a really intersting read. Thank you.

[livejournal.com profile] moonlash_cc has been doing ep reactions and a LOT of meta, though not yet for tonight (she's usually delayed a little).

I watch weekly, but I try to avoid actually, y'know, talking about it. I've come to the conclusion my level of fannish squee is in direct inverse relation to the amount of time I spend talking about it. Go figure. ;)

Speaking of, my torrent finally d/led. *SQUEE*

Deep, insightful analysis has never been my strong suit, but I can squee like the best of all blonde cheerleaders!

Plus, Hugh Laurie? Please. I'm a squeeing blonde fangirl from waaaay back.
In addition to [livejournal.com profile] shrift and [livejournal.com profile] thete1 I've got [livejournal.com profile] pun, [livejournal.com profile] linzeems and the ever so lovely [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy does a hilarious running commentary/dialog quote thing that I often read *before* I watch an ep. Her commentaries don't give away *anything* but make the show that much more amusing when you see what she's quoted in context.

I feel so nostalgic. There are so many ([livejournal.com profile] thete1, [livejournal.com profile] shrift) Mulder/Krycek authors into House. That alone just has me all SQUEE!
Ooh, you were X-Files? *grin* must be nice to see familiar faces. I'mkind of excited that so many of my flist have fallen into it, too.
XF was my first fandom. Seeing everyone again in House is just... It's like coming home!

I'm out beating the drum for this show too *G*. I'm partial to House/Wilson, myself, but am still at the "will read anything to get a fix" stage of a new fandom.

From: [identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com Date: 2005-03-17 05:23 am (UTC)
*giggle* Oh yeah, I remember reading--well, I will never admit what I used to read in SV to get a fix but *coughClarkLanacoughhorrorcought* but isn't it just *cool* that so many are into it? it's like a fangirlathon.

Whee! thankyou!
Someone's probably said all this already somewhere, but I tend to see House-love all over my flist, so I'm going to chime in as a dissenting voice.

I'm going to be in the minority here, but I'd slash House more as an act of retaliation than love. He's such an unbelievable misogynist. I think his fear/discomfort/hatred of women comes across pretty clearly. Can one read his reaction to those of us with vaginas as gay? Maybe. But it's not necessary for gay men to hate us in order to express their homosexuality. I'm on a homophobe kick, so maybe I can read it as homophobia. He resists his sexuality, so he tries to pass for straight; therefore, he's a jerk to most guys. But he resists women, so he behaves worse toward them, making the work place tough at his least offensive, and sexually harrassing them at his most offensive.

Beyond that, I see no one holding him accountable for his actions. I read this as a throwback to the kind of patriarchy we used to get in the workplace all the time, with men behaving in the worst possible ways, and women indulging them with a "boys will be boys" attitude. I see the resistance put up by the female characters in the show as token. This guy always wins, always gets his way, and the women keep trying, but they look so defeated, so *out of place* in their high-power jobs, as if they don't belong. As if it takes a *real man* to hold a position of authority in a high stress environment. The executive/patient last night sent that message with her bulimia and her cutting. And I mean, what's with undermining a woman's attempt to address her gender-based tendancy to defer to male authority by reading a self-help book? "Read less. Watch more t.v." !!! What a "Yellow Wallpaper" line. Don't think, dear. You'll hurt yourself. Women get trained from birth to accomodate others. We have to unlearn that behavior. Books help.

It's a dodgy show for me. I don't like the messages it sends me about myself. At least on SV we get extremely competant Chloe, and we get male characters who take her seriously/respect her judgment.

I've wanted to jump on another show's bandwagon because I see us losing SV soon, but I don't think I can go with this one.

I want to jump fandoms with all my favorite writers. I wish I could love this show. I just don't think I can get past the misogyny.
All very true. That business in the pilot, when House says it's unusual for a beautiful woman to go to medical school, and assumes that "rewards" like self-respect, knowledge, power, and achievement are *not* things women generally want... that was pretty ugly. The extent to which the show presents House as a hero (which it of course *does*) makes me uncomfortable.

I have to watch a little more to decide how I feel about it, but yeah, you make *lots* of good points.
Thanks for saying that. I admit I haven't watched all the eps. I've watched two straight through, and I've watched scenes here and there. But I haven't wanted to watch. I get offended by these messages about women and change channels.

I'm open to the possibility I haven't watched enough of it to understand the show. Not sure. But last night really bothered me. So did the first ep I watched. Maybe it was the pilot. I don't remember the plot -- don't remember much past anger the first time I saw it. I remember last night just fine.
I think I will possibly never learn to spell "competent" correctly, and will therefore sound incompetent every time I use the word. Somebody kick me, please.

At least I looked it up, right? Shit.

*kicks self, hard*
We are definitely going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Though this:

This guy always wins, always gets his way, and the women keep trying, but they look so defeated, so *out of place* in their high-power jobs, as if they don't belong. As if it takes a *real man* to hold a position of authority in a high stress environment. The executive/patient last night sent that message with her bulimia and her cutting.

For me--and to clarify, I rarely if ever examine for sexism unless I notice something specific, so I could be just not seeing--I didn't read it that way. Or even close on the executive. The only pattern I've noted that was of any interest was how hard the show is on controlling personalities, male or female, in creating their own problems, from the father with leprosy, to the baseball player, both males in relative positions of power. The majority of the epsiodes, to me, deal with House coming up against people his equal in either power or will. With the exec--I really just don't see it. *shrug* Each to their own.

And I mean, what's with undermining a woman's attempt to address her gender-based tendancy to defer to male authority by reading a self-help book? "Read less. Watch more t.v." !!! What a "Yellow Wallpaper" line.

I was more offended by the use of blatant manipulation. It was an interesting plot point that she felt she needed to resort to manipulation to be listened to, but I've never seen the three junior doctors interact as anything but equal rivals. *shrug* We could be reading this totally different.

I defer to you on your greater knowledge on the subject of sexism, though. I just don't see it as an overreaching flaw in the show itself.
I've only seen two eps, so you have the full read of the show to my admittedly limited experience with it. I'm sure I'll keep trying as I see House fandom grow, but I doubt I'll change my mind about the misogyny. I think it's there. I hope I'm wrong, though. I'd like to be wrong.

I'm pretty good at agreeing to disagree, actually. No kerfuffle worries from me, k?

*hardest hugs*
*laughS* No, I totlaly see what you were looking at. And for this, I really do defer to you. I don't--let me try to put this right, becuase it comes off as bitchy ad re-reading, it *does* look bitchy. I don't see sexism at *all*, unless it is Ally Mcbeal level blatant. Does that make sense? Otherwise, I won't see it until it goes to that level (shudders) or unless someone else reads it and shows me. My job is almost exclusively in teh world of women--eighty percent of the people in my office? Are women. And most of my clients are women. I can go a week without having any direct discussion or work with anyone wiht a penis. Sexism and sexual harrassment in the workplace have *never come up* in my current job, except as a sideline of stories from others, so I don't have any practical experience. I wear heels to work, and very low shirts sometimes, just because I really like Express to a really scary degree, so--yeah. I dont' and honestly probably won't see it, because I do not experience it. So I tend to read tv shows through that. The cutting thing actually was teh only thing that threw me--instead of the 'omgtheevilpsychologicalhorrorandsickness', the acknowledgement that it works like an antidepressive for some people, which was really interesting and probably the one thing I latched on to for food for thought.

And I'd as soon kerfuffle with you as pull my fingernails out. *hugs back*

Oh - [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke and [livejournal.com profile] astolat have both written some really nice stories. [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords is working on a story (yay)!

[livejournal.com profile] vagabondage is talking about eps as they air, [livejournal.com profile] cereta is also watching (we all got pimped in one glorious weekend!)

[livejournal.com profile] marzilla has fallen and can't get up! [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh has pimped high and pimped low. [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen has a terminal case and I'll stop now, I swear.

Man, I think this is just the tip of the iceberg, too as there were many conversions at Escapade. I'll keep better track of it, but dude, my Flist has exploded with House.

And there is also [livejournal.com profile] housefic.

I'm fascinated by the characters and situations, and the medical errors (MAJOR ones) make my hair stand on end. It's certainly not going to keep me from watching, of course. I'll stick by it 'til it goes the way of all shows I love...but I DO wish they'd check some of their medical details.

Botox(tm) doesn't 'tighten' anything. It paralyzes the tiny muscles in the face that cause wrinkles to appear when they contract.

Bulemia is rarely a choice, but more of a compulsion -- not something that can be turned around by a teary, 'I want to live.'

And transplantation is most definitely not a happily-ever-after solution. The recipient will never be 'normal', living on a constantly juggling diet of pills to suppress rejection and pills to control as much as possible the effects of immunosupression and more pills for lots of other things, with the threat of rejection always looming. It drives me mad when tv presents a heart transplant as a one-time, make-it-all-better occurrence. A transplant is a life style, not an operation.

That said, I also found it irritating that Cameron was so blatant in her manipulation. She'd be better at it than that.

[ /rant ]

Sigh.

I love this show.
