I'm just going to say it--nothing makes your bad day look infinitely better than watching the first episode of season six BtVS. I mean *nothing*. Anytime your consciousness *doesn't* start with clawing your way out of your own grave already loses for Bad Days.
And--just from curiosity--am I the only one that *loved* season six as possbily my favorite season ever? This has multiple reasonings behind it, not the least of which is the general misery of everyone. It kept *acting* like things were getting better, then they didn't, then got *worse*, then lightened--no, wait. Worse again. It's not just the angstwhore in me. It's that sometimes, you don't have bad days or even bad weeks, but bad *years*.
Though I have yet to see season seven, so maybe I'll like that better. Hmm.
And nothing on earth cheers me up as much as the musical. I originally saw this using an *antenna* wrapped with foil that I was *holding* the entire time. It brings back blissful memories of pre-sattelite days. You know, when Rabbit Ears were The Thing.
Rural life does not have a lot of compensations for that one, I have to tell you.
Anyway, stayed home from work today and yesterday. There was this--thing. Session where we aired our problems and complaints, and I started giggling during the middle of this recitation of problems in our office. So. Monday will be bad, but Monday is very far away. And I am armed with a new suede skirt that day.
So. This is a general question. Comfort Christmas Cookies. The book I have is *really bad*. Me and my mother both tend to make notes in cookbooks of what works for us and what doesn't, and looking, I found maybe three recipes that we both liked. So, right now I have Peanut Blossoms, Divinity, and those things that are stiff egg whites mixed with chocolate chips and baked hard, which are *really good*. Any favorites anyone wants to share? I was thinking Christmas Candy this year but then I remembered The Year of the Fondant and the Fire Alarms and so, no, not so much with that. So. Chocolate, almond, mint, go for it. Tell me what deliciousness I should perpetrate on my family this year.
Anyone?

From:My favourite season is probably S3 for Faith. And oh-so-wimpy Wes. And Cordy! And Oz. (Although I'd kinda miss Tara. A lot.) And the general cuteness that was the high-school scoobie gang.
But the musical ep? Best episode that season, and... oh, pretty damn close to one of the best episodes ever. Of any show. Everybody singing and emoting, and managing to be really entertaining while also dealing with the underlying deceit of their lives? What's not to love?

From:Dawn only bothered me during the beginning of season five. She still annoys me, but at the same level practially any character does at some point. Plus, I like her melodrama. It's cute. Xander is the one I always had problems with. Which is something I try never, ever to admit in mixed company, because, *man*.
*happy sigh* I always love Buffy, though. Love, love, love.

*nod* I miss Oz and Tara both, desperately.
I--didn't like Faith until Angel, I don't think. I mean, I didn't hate her, but she didn't click for me as a *person* until she started being a sociopath and then started reforming from that. I'm still utterly enraptured with the ep where Wesley goes to tell her in prison about Angel reverting and she just breaks out. Just wow.

Oh God yes. There is *nothing* I don't love about that episode, start to finish, which is more than I can say for just about anything ever written for television. It just never stops being funny or heartbreaking or intense or cool all the way through. It's the only ep I can watch over and over and not get tired of.
Plus, nothing makes me giggle faster than that guy outside, singing how they got the mustard out of his shirt. *happy place*

From:S6 is my second favorite season (s3 is my first) and I always feel so alone in that. I adore the season. Except for Willow's magic addiction, I pretty much adore most of this season from top to bottom.
And! I also love Buffy. Buffy the person, and it so often feels like a minority opinion.
And! Yesterday I was listening to the musical (the cd) at work and getting nothing done because I kept singing along and getting up and dancing a little and yes.
Okay, I also love Xander, but really, having someone else say all the things I say (and normally to deafening silence) just makes my day.

From:Yeah, that addiction thing was--*weird*. But I go with it.
And! I also love Buffy. Buffy the person, and it so often feels like a minority opinion.
After season five, the one time I dipped my toes tentatively into the fandom side of Buffy, I *never* went near it again. I love Buffy. I love her even when she's an idiot. Just love her.
And! Yesterday I was listening to the musical (the cd) at work and getting nothing done because I kept singing along and getting up and dancing a little and yes.
*grins* I sing along. I sound as bad as James Marsters, too. It's so sad. Yet that entire fire sequence *demands* I emote at the top of my lungs. It so does.
Okay, I also love Xander, but really, having someone else say all the things I say (and normally to deafening silence) just makes my day.
*thinks* I don't hate him. It's just, of all of them, he tends to hit me wrong most. BtVS never had a character I genuinely wanted to disappear from my screen. Except Riley. Who deserves a post all on his own on how much he *annoyed me to death*. Even when I don't think he meant to.

From:I also love Buffy. I love her from beginning to the very end. She's not perfect or the greatest hero with no flaws, she's Buffy. And after leaving through some opinions about her after s7 or even s6, I just have to hold my tongue and keep repeating that, because she is still Buffy and I still love her.
I don't hate anyone in Buffy land and really only hate one character from Angel (waves to Eve the useless), so I've always felt a little in the minority of the fandom. Even Riley, frankly. :)

From:Yes, exactly. *g* She's just... such a teenager.
Xander is the one I always had problems with. Which is something I try never, ever to admit in mixed company, because, *man*.
See, I have the same trouble with Xander, Willow and Buffy, actually. I love the characters to death, really I do, but I can also find them extremely annoying/impractical/plain silly at times. I have a feeling that out of the main cast, Giles is the only one who I constantly love, even when he does wrong.
Plus, nothing makes me giggle faster than that guy outside, singing how they got the mustard out of his shirt. *happy place*

i think that hydrant wasn't there
*grins* I'm also amused, endlessly, by Giles saying "I examined the body while the police were taking witness arias."
*giggles and giggles* Everything is in the details. Right up to the fire trucks slamming behind the five of them during the fire song.
*happy*
I need to watch again. I don't *yet* have it memorized.

From:The musical, though - I will never grow tired of it! We got a new bulb for our projector the other night, and that was the first thing I told the SO to put in for us to watch. I just think that episode was brilliantly put together. They covered so many very important, deep topics that probably would have made for a real downer of an episode. But they were able to keep it funny and happy and gorgeous along with the pain. I really don't think there could have been a more effective way to bring out all of the secrets everyone was harboring at that time.
Besides, I still remember my full-on squee at the end when Buffy and Spike kissed! Hee!!

The thing with Spike--confused me. A lot. I think I need to see season seven straight through to see if they were doing what I think they were.

God, yes. Exactly. They did it *gorgeously*, and so much fun.

I couldn't believe it. Literally. I sat there, staring, thinking, I will never try to predict Joss again. I will never even *try*, because he never does anything like anyone else.
Of course, then there was Smashed, and I still think of that moment we all heard teh zipper go down, thinking, he is NOT. He is NOT. OMG he is! They are! Right there!

From:And I loved Season Six. I have Anya's song downloaded and I have been known to dance around singing "Mrs. Anya lame-ass, made up maiden name-Harris" and twirling about some. And I really liked Season Seven. Especially at the beginning. It's utterly violent and depressing and then Faith comes back and--yeah. I think you'd like it. A lot.

From:Immortal Fantasy Fudge
(as posted to alt.tv.highlander)
You'll need:
4 1/2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 large can of evaporated milk (I forget how many oz. that is; I like to use Milnot) [Note: it's about a cup]
24 oz. of Hershey's milk chocolate (this is about 18 regular size candy bars)
a small bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
a jar of marshmallow cream (the short one, not the tall one) [Note: this is a pint; I checked]
4 cups of coarsely chopped nuts (I prefer pecans)
First thing is you need to do a little preparation. Break the candy bars up into little pieces and put them in one bowl, and chop the nuts and put them into another bowl (don't mix them up). Have the marshmallow cream (and a spoon to get it out of the jar) and the chocolate chips ready to go. At the end of this recipe you'll need to work fast and you need to have things close at hand.
Butter the pans you're going to put the fudge into. I use a 9"x13" baking pan and a 7"x11" dish (this recipe makes 5 pounds of fudge, but that's OK because it freezes well).
Now, combine the sugar, butter, and evaporated milk in a large, heavy pan. Heat it up over medium-high heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Let it come to a rolling boil, and then cook it (at a boil) for 5 more minutes. Not 4 minutes. Not 6 minutes. 5 minutes.
[Note: at this point, this stuff is **really** hot; handle with extreme care.]
Take it off the heat and add (in this order):
Marshmallow cream
Chocolate (candy bar pieces and chocolate chips)
Nuts
You need to have the marshmallow cream and the chocolate *completely* melted and mixed in *before* you add the nuts, because the nuts will cool the mixture down really fast and it won't be hot enough to melt the chocolate. You'll also need to work fast, for the same reason. The mixture gets a little hard to stir by the time you get the nuts mixed in.
Pour (shovel) the mixture into the buttered dishes and smooth it out. Let it sit in a cool place until it's firm, and then cut into squares.
Ta-daaa.

From:Thought that might grab your attention.
Basically, they're little cookie puffs that you sandwich together when, cooled, with tinted buttercream frosting. You use a shotglass to cut them out. They're decadent and full of sugar, butter, and all those good things that make cookies good. If you'd like the recipe, I'll email it on Monday. Let me know. (I'm sure they'd be great with chocolate buttercream, too...maybe a ganache?)
As to Buffy, et al: I liked S6, but I think I was always a bit disappointed because it changed homes (UPN vs WB) and tone. But I heart The Musical. All the random secondary songs/dancing/acting going on in the background is always so much fun to watch! The drycleaning chorus always cracks me up.
My first apartment had rabbit ears, and I had to move the antennas every time I wanted to change channels. I am a huge fan of cable now that I can afford it!

From:Bonbon Cookies
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 tablespoon vanilla
Few drops food color, if desired
1.5 cups Gold Medal all-purpose flour (not self-rising flour)
1/8 teaspoon salt
Filling material -- dates, nuts, semisweet chocolate chips, cherries, Hershey's Kisses or Hugs, whatever
Glaze (below)
Heat oven to 350. Mix powdered sugar, margarine, vanilla and food color. Work in flour and salt until dough holds together. (If dough is dry, mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons milk,.) For each cookie, shape dough by tablespoonful around filling material to form ball. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until set but not brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Cool and dip tops of cookies into glaze. Decorate with coconut, nuts, colored sugar, or sprinkles if desired. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
Glaze
Beat 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon plus 1.5 teaspoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth and of desired consistency. Tint with few drops food color if desired.
On a personal note, these things get eaten like candy and I wound up making huge batches. And also, color-coding dough and glaze to identify different filling materials -- Kisses in one color scheme, Hugs in another, butterscotch chips in a third, etc.

From:I thought I was the only one!!! Angst squared! Or maybe cubed. I really loved Buffy when she was suicidally depressed, and Willow when she was homicidally depressed, and Dawn when she was criminally depressed, and Anya when she was demonically depressed and....OK I'll stop. Plus Spike and Buffy have stunningly violent, abusive sex (yum!). There's my all time favorite 2 ep sequence in Buffy: Once More With Feeling and Tabula Rasa. Best moment: when Giles cracks up after hearing that Buffy is sleeping with Spike. Hated the nerd trio, but otherwise a perfect season.

From:Zen Cookies (adapted from Will Shetterly's Finest-Kind Cookies)
¾ cup butter, softened
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ cup honey
1 egg
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon guava nectar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon coconut extract
3 cups uncooked rolled oats
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon dried orange peel
¼ teaspoon dried lemon peel
½ cup coconut
6 ounces each semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate and butterscotch chips
1 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 F. Beat the butter, brown sugar, honey, egg, juice, and extracts together until creamy. Add the oats, flour, and seasonings until well blended. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Shape dough into 1- inch balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. (You may need to wash your hands frequently during this step as the dough is rather sticky.) Bake for 10 to 12 minutes and remove immediately to a wire rack to cool. Makes about 8 dozen.

3 Tbs. lemon juice
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 can (18 oz.) unsweetened pineapple juice (2 1/4 cups)

In large saucepan, heat cider and one cinnamon stick to boiling; reduce heat. Cover; simmer 5 minutes. Uncover; stire in remaining ingredients except Orange Stars and cinnamon sticks and simmer 5 minutes longer. Serve in punch bowl; float Orange Stars in bowl. Use cinnamon sticks as individual stirrers. Makes about 8 cups.

2-12 oz. bags semi-sweet chocolate chips

peanuts (or, if you loathe peanuts like I do, pecans or almonds or chopped walnuts or...you get the idea)
Melt chips together (I usually stick them in a big glass bowl, cook them for three minutes, pull them out and stir them, then cook and stir in two minute increments. You want to make sure they don't scorch.)
Add remaining ingredients. Mix well.
Drop from spoon onto waxed paper. Cool. Eat.
