(no subject)

Went shopping. Huge mistake. Suddenly became obsessed with buying denim skirt. Found at old stand-by, Gap. Of course.

I admit it--I'm a huge Gap girl. There's a reason for this. I can pretty much buy any shirt/bottom combination and it will usually go together. Being fashion-impaired, I appreciate this immensely. I'm a huge fan of their long-sleeve t-shirts in grey and black and white--the go with everything! A while back, I daringly bought a red stretch long-sleeve rib shirt and a three quarters sleeve navy shirt there. They, too, go with almost everything and are my only real concession to teh concept that once in awhile, one should wear colors.

Once in awhile. *Grins* I got this red sheathe ribbed cotton dress from my grandmother--tea length with a little jacket of the same material over it. No ironing required, just hangs there. I managed to shock everyone at work--colors! Voluntary! Jenn out of grey and brown and beige and black! Wow!

Scary I've worked there three and a half months and they know me THAT well.

Anyway, found my OTS (One True Skirt), knee length, denim, so pretty. But wait! What's this?

Size, apparently.

Now, my weight fluctuates, it always has, but has always stayed in a general spectrum of eight to ten pretty much, with the bizarre six that sneaks in for some kinds of long skirt. So I got a ten and an eight to try on, and watched in horror as they slipped off my hips and pooled at my feet.

Oh, this can't be good, thinks me, watching in a kind of fascinated horror. This would be a cry for help for someone to feed me lots of sandwiches.

Sent hot salesboy for a six. Better, but still sitting on my hips, and no, it wasn't the kind of skirt that was supposed to do that. Scared, I told him to get a four, and he trots back, hands it over, and woo, we have a fit. A tiny bit loose, but it still has to be washed and I don't like very tight clothes anyway.

But a fucking FOUR?

So, I had my sister try on a few things.

Now, my sisters are what some might call slim ,others might call scary--the youngest is too thin to fit into a normal size zero, and my other sister just makes a two-four if she's bloated. Think about that one. Hip huggers were very happy things for both of them, btw, since for the first time, they could find the right length and size, but I digress. We watched in a kind fo facination as a one, theoretically the smallest in the store, slipped right off her and decided that Gap must just have bizarre sizes, not that I was apparently on the edge of imminent starvation.

I'm five ten. There is no way in a normal world that I would fit into a four and not have to be carried around due to sheer lack of energy due to starvation.

But, ego boost. And it's a cool skirt. Got cotton shirt to match, ignoring my hatred of the iron, because it's soo cute. Huge sale on Nine West shoes that I resisted, but damn, now that I think about it, they had the cutest sandles on sale that would have been fabulous with my skirt.

Gah and gah.

Also, bath products--waht was I supposed to do? They were buy one get one free at the mall! Scent is red currant and thyme tea. I dare anyone to resist buying the entire set at those prices!

Aren't I just FASCINATING? *Grins*

Still vaguely obsessed over amazon.com. That stupid free shipping over twenty-five dollar thing. Grrr. Must hide check card. Tonight. Somewhere I can't find it.

Also must find bathing suit for upcoming trip to beach, but damned if I was going to be that masochistic today.

More later. I'm working on my feedback for [livejournal.com profile] the_treasury tonight so as not to be late again.

Ah, I see you have not witnessed the bizarre phenomenon of the Gap size zero. It commands a sort of morbid fascination... (A friend in high school wore that size at five foot two and ninety pounds...)

It's the only place I really have to try on clothes every damn time. I mean, my jeans? Same size since I was around fifteen-sixteen, I think, in Levi's, pretty easy. But Gap--I mean, some larges are way too big, and some mediums are way too big, and then it just--yes. Very strange.

It's like the clothing twilight zone. *grins* I wonder what magical number system they are using?

I shop a lot at the Gap. It has the basic stuff you have to dig like a hedgehog to find at department stores. I like denim skirts. I've got two of them, one knee length that I got at Target, the other midtheigh with cargo pockets that I got at Wet Seal. As for colors, I think I overcompensate when I do buy them. This is how I have magenta strech jeans.

Gap sizes fluctuate a lot. I have a skirt from there that's a size 6, a pair of shorts that's size 10, and another pair of shorts that's a size 8. They all fit, although the 8s are for some reason looser than the 10s. I'm about a 6 now, normally I'm an 8. I think. I also don't normally wear womens (I wear juniors, the odd sizes) clothes, but Gap makes things to fit teen bodies more than adult ones, usually. I say usually. There's just a lot of different sizing going on there. I have a pair of size eight pants from there that just fit me wrong, so they're too loose at my butt and too tight at my waist. This is how womens clothes usually fit (me).
I would say I'm almost always a size nine, but I recently got a pair of size nine shorts thinking that, and they slip a little further down my hips than I think they're supposed to. I think. The stuff they sell in the juniors department can be, um. Interesting. Apparently tank tops with breasts already in them were popular for awhile. The extra lining is for support. Right . That's why they're padded and shaped? That's not comfortable. Let's not get into how short the shorts are.

So. Well. Womens clothing sizes suck. We need real numbers, like mens have. Numbers that represent inches, or some actual measurement.

Yes, exactly. Basic, comfortable clothing that matches everything. I really am a huge fan of their long-sleeve t-shirts--they go with everything, you can wear them alone or under anything, and they're comfortable as hell.

*grins* Magenta? Wow.

YES. I have this one pair of beige pants I love, but I ended up getting a size too big and they're still too short, which annoys me endlessly. For hte longest ones, the size was WAY too big.

That--scares me. A LOT.

I did find a bra today that came with breasts in it--this thick, soft, gel-feeling stuff. It was surreal.

Hee! Short-shorts? Double as underwear. I've seen, I've worn, I fear.

So. Well. Womens clothing sizes suck. We need real numbers, like mens have. Numbers that represent inches, or some actual measurement.

Mmm. Wishes were horses....

*thinks* I'm guessing American sizes aren't the same as Australian, because in that case... I'd be able to wrap my two hands around your thinnest sister's waist.

The Gap sounds a lot like Target, which is invariably where I shop. Relatively cheap clothes, a range of basic styles and colours, and generally made out of cotton.

Well--my youngest sister IS very thin--and at this point, it's not even that she's unhealthy or doesn't eat--she just burns out calories FAST. Oru mother's side of the family metabolism has been good to us all, but God, she always looks so damn THIN. My other sister has done a little better, especially after her pregnancy, but she's still really thin as well.

Genetics are weird, weird, weird.

Hee! And Gap rocketh. All yoru basics and all so damn comfy and all matching mostly. I have thing for it. I think there's an online store if you ever want to go look. I recommend them simply because they are easiest for casual work clothes for me and again, the matching thing. Which those of us who are incapable of making fashion decisions? Godsend.

God, I miss the grunge era.

Gap is very odd. Two years ago - and about v10 pounds heavier - I bought some size 6 Gap trousers (AKA pants) which fitted quite well, maybe a little loose even.

I bought some more size 6 in a sale a year later - did not try them on - they were waty too small, even though the original Gap size 6s were still fitting.

I have lost weight - now the 'too small' size six are enormous on me.

I haven't gone back to try a size 4. It seems so random.

I only had US size clothes, so I have no clue what UK size I am now.

Throwing in my two Gapcents just to make you feel more sane (we all need that, don't we?).

[livejournal.com profile] shaggirl introduced me to the incomparable loveliness that is the Gap when she was visiting. Being fashionably challenged myself, I'm also very grateful for their high-matchworthiness clothing and plethora of tanks without shelf bras sewn in (I'm just not into the uniboob look).

Anyway, I'm a 10 (hee hee, I love saying that), and the 10s I bought there were just a little roomy when I tried them on. I figured they'd shrink, as all jeans do. Well, they did, but not enough. I haven't worn an 8 since high school, but Gap's 8 fits me perfectly.

Thing is, to be honest, even though I know the sizes are off, it makes me feel great to try on clothes that should be too small for me and aren't!! After hovering in the size 14/16 range after I had my son, I'm exstatic to step into single-digits again.

Gap/Old Navy sizes are on crack. Like you I fit into their size 4's but every where else is anywhere between a six and a 9/10. But hell, I'm a sucker for cheap (yay Old Navy!) basic clothes to round out my closet -- half my wardrobe is now from ON but the great thing is that you really can't tell.

My fave item this past winter were the light gauge wool v-neck sweaters I got at Old Navy for $20. Dude, twenty bucks for a wool sweater? One that I can wear from October thru to March/April? So fucking there! Oh, and yay for color too, they've got the best "whorish red" on the planet. :)

At least it's not like Abercrombie or Jordache, in which I (a size 8-10 generally) can't fit myself into a size sixteen without a crowbar and some lube. I think it's pressure toward anorexia as a lifestyle. Oh, God, I'm bulbous! I'm an eighteen at Abercrombie! Bring on the Slimfast and the personal trainer!
