Rosso Relativo by zarah5. Two things really worked for me. The stuttered break-up of the scenes, and Clark, who is the king of being freakily inconsistent. Ah, Smallville writers, how we love thee. Anyway. Most interesting is what he doesn't quite understand about limits, and the Clark and Lex interaction is fascinating. Bonus: interesting discussion in commentary about the story, which I recommend reading.

Underneath by zarah5. Jonathan POV, watching Clark and Lex and some very subtle pre-CLexness going on. Same as above--quick, short scenes, beautiful style, and some interesting things going on in Jonathan's head.

You know? Finding fic I've never read by an author I haven't read? It's turning out to be a good, good week.

Oh, zarah is one of my favorite writers. I'm not sure quite how much Smallville she'll be writing, but I hope she'll write more. Though I don't want her to leave LotR RPS for it. Sounds very effective. However, what, exactly, are your criterias? I mean, you can't just randomly choose people out of some fandom. What you need is some sort of system. The ones already in fandoms like Roswell are probably more likely to get sucked into Smallville, so you might want to concentrate on them.

In my reading, usually, Lex doesn't refuse Clark. When he does, he does it for the usual reasons--too young, too dangerous to the friendship, Lex-feels-unworthy, Clark-has-secrets, or there's someone else, you get the idea.

I haven't seen it done like this very often, where Lex refuses on he grounds that he can't trust Clark, whereas usually, it's that Lex doesn't trust himself with Clark.

The entire discussion of limits, at first, threw me--I wasn't entirely sure how you were going to wrap that together. But to me, it seemed very Lexian--it was more than the value of the friendship, more than Lex not trusting himself with Clark or not trusting Clark, but a simple acknowledgement that Clark isn't capable of being consistent enough and strong enough to take this kind of risk with, because it's doomed to failure the second it starts. As a friend, he's frighteningly callous at times, which is already a strain on most of his friendships, if not all. As a lover, it would be disasterous. Friendship can forgive or overlook things that would never be acceptable from a significant other, and that includes Clark's secrets to a certain extent. In all, it was an interesting way to bring it all together in one package of Lex saying no.

I'm not even sure by the end of the story that Clark really gets all of Lex's reasoning, or if he did, he'd understand the whys. I'm guessing he doesn't.

God, I worded that badly. And I could be completely off-base, so feel free to tell me so.

Oh gods, yes. As has already been discussed in the comments of the story, Clark is really not your ideal friend. I still can't quite get over the fact how he tends to blow Lex off one minute, then call him best friend the next one. Lex let's Clark get away with a whole damn lot of things, I agree that he's not the kind of guy who'd let a lover do the same.

Sometimes, I wonder about the drug snorting habits of the script writers.
