Satanic Temple seeks Hobby Lobby-style exemption from anti-abortion laws

Thank you, yahoo news; I can state with perfect honesty that I didn't see this coming.

I am really enjoying the legal responses of the Satanists. They're also trying to get a lovely family-friendly statue put up on public land in Oklahoma.

I don't quite understand. The people who are most vulnerable to misinformation are probably not the people who would benefit from an exemption like this, because in order to know about the exception and request it, they would have to have been previously informed about the nature of misinformation they were about to receive.

It's not a lawsuit to actually exempt Satanists or other women from receiving the information - it's a challenge designed to undermine and ridicule the Hobby Lobby ruling (which basically states that the religious beliefs of the employer, whether scientifically based or not, is more relevant than the healthcare of an individual employee.) The Satanist Temple attack religious-based law all over the US when it's unequally applied.

At no time did I think I'd support a legal action from Satanists, and yet... I kind of love the idea of religious rights for all. It's a bit nuts, but it's a weirdly fair type of madness.

Read their faq - they're not "really" Satanists - or rather, they're Satanists in the Mark Twain vein, where Satan stands for rational thought in the face of superstitious thinking. It's a long American tradition, actually, to ally behind Satan--think of things like Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary.

Interesting. I didn't know there was a tradition behind it.

On the one hand, it's a good way of fighting religious fire with religious fire...

but on the other hand, now abortion is officially aligned with Satan? Fox News must love that /o\

I did; it's the logical conclusion. (The outright Fox News types will miss the actual point, but that's to be expected too.)

Bet the Supremes didn't see that coming, either. There are days I truly adore the Law of Unintended Consequences.

The friend who shared that story on Facebook mentioned his opinion that Satanism is less a religion than a form of performance art. I can't argue with the supposition.
