From:I don't really like the explanation for what happened with the beach scene? I do think it's at least partly a case of laziness and letting the audience's knowledge of the future tell the story instead of the actual, you know, story and characters as you've established them tell the story. but I also don't think it's entirely implausible, given the story and characters. I definitely agree that neither Erik nor Raven knew the extent of the damage and that's exactly how Charles wanted it, but I don't see a mind-whammy as being necessary to explain anyone's actions. I find them all to be fairly satisfactory even if they don't make me happy, strictly speaking. I mean, Erik is pretty prone to extreme responses; that's how he's lived his entire life. he's not a middle of the road kind of dude. so he certainly could have stuck around and tried to reconcile his viewpoint with Charles' (or, I guess, waited for A BETTER TIME to reconcile it), but. I'm not sure he knows how? I think it's very important that he completely forgot about the missiles when Charles was hit — do you think this is a man who has ever put down a weapon once he's found a direction for it? (including Erik himself.) I'm not sure how much more of that he had in him.
as for Raven, she was very angry with Charles. loved him, sure, but there was a lot of resentment there, and by the end of the film she's very aware of how he's failed her. despite that, I do think she was prepared to stay. we see from her POV briefly, and she is walking towards them as though making a choice, and I think she makes the choice to stay with Charles. just as it's important to acknowledge that Erik lets the missiles fall, it's important that she makes that choice first.
but basically I agree with you that they completely screwed themselves for a sequel. McAvoy has said that he hopes they don't start off the next one with Charles and Erik completely working against each other, but I think that's going to be difficult.
