Wow.

Interview with Anton Nosik, the director of the blog division of SUP corporations, translated by [livejournal.com profile] russianswinga, posted by [livejournal.com profile] darkrosetiger. Original article is here.

Brief quote:

Reporter: Users that are unhappy about the fact that the right to a base account is reserved only for bloggers that registered before the 12th of march, are calling for a boycott of your resource. How massive do you expect this boycott to be?

Nosik: I don't know any of LJ posters familiar to me, those I have friended and commented, that would want to join said boycott. I honestly don't know any people that would seriously take up that initiative. So I am presuming such an idea to be marginal at best. Something like calling all the advertisers in the American section of livejournal and calling on them to cancel their ads

Reporter: Have they actually called them?

Nosik: Of course not. Where will you find such idiots that will call serious companies? It's one thing - to call a newspaper in hope that they will give you 15 minutes of fame on their page. But a proper firm? The first thing you'll get asked is "so who exactly are you trying to reach? What is this about and why the hell should we care?"

Read the rest. Charming. Really.
I'd like to thank weird sounds for waking me up, giving me an adrenaline rush, and tehn leaving me awake. Very awake. Hence, I have to do something.

I am totally behind in my Anonymous-gazing. Luckily, it's no longer all that hard to find what you missed. And for those new here wondering what the hell, my continuing fascination with what appears to be--almost--a live action meme.

As we all know, February 10 was the first IRL protest by Anonymous of Scientology, followed by a March 15 turnout called The Ides of March. Many of us watched in bemusement. Because really. Who saw this coming? (At least the first one. The second one--yeah, saw that one coming. Deeply curious about April now).

The Road to February 10th - a video documenting from the release of the Tom Cruise video to the first IRL protest. Really good. Really really good. Really really interesting. Did I mention good?

Radar Online

Cult Friction in Radar Online, really fantastic, if brief, overview of the current--er, conflict. Pre March 15th information.

Briefly:

After an embarrassing string of high-profile defection and leaked videos, Scientology is under attack from a faceless cabal of online activists. Has America's most controversial religion finally met its match?

Okay, cutting for space.

The thing that makes me sad is that too much time spent at Dramatica has introduced butthurt into common conversation with people (people who are at work), and spellcheck and I keep arguing about the spelling of moar.

Right, moving on.

And my personal favorite--well, I'm a fangirl. Combine vidding with social activism and I'm there.

Next date: Operation Reconnect on April 12

The only thing that vaguely surprises me is that AFAIK, only Journalfen, Facebook and MySpace have Anonymous hubs among the social network world. At least, I haven't foudn one yet on IJ or LJ.

Earlier vaguely coherent entries available under the tag a versus s
Environments are in read-only for mass updates. I wish I could explain what that actually is, because it's deceivingly nothing like what those words mean according to the dictionary, but I really can't. I know it's a mass, and it's an update, and while yes, it is, no, it's really not. And it sucks.

However, this rare morning, it gives me a short, brilliant moment to surf friendsfriends.

Sarah T on the lower numbers of John/Ronon in SGA.

Actually, I've kind of vaguely wondered about that, but--the thing is, my first fandom was Star Trek and I came out of that physically incapable of not having a header (though sometimes I break conditioning and remove it) and a taste for random internet drama. I also came out of it unable to believe Kirk was heterosexual and it would still be a year before I stared blankly at my first slash OTP (Pyro/Iceman, in case you were curious).

(Sidenote: I was on there watching or posting actively 1999 -2001--wow. Just. Yeah. This is why flamewars rarely scare me and why I don't often participate; I know some fandoms have been far wankier for far longer and with greater populations and drama, but I'm not sure any fandom post-usenet can hit that same deeply terrifying intensity where there were no prisoners taken and occasionally you realized the ground was being sown with salt. Deeply awesome. Even when you had no idea what Treksmut university was and kept freaking out every time your inbox pinged.)

Right. Moving on. The OTP even in Voyager was Kirk/Spock. I mean, that's an exaggeration, but not much of one. ASCEM(L) was like, KS Central. And I know this because I didnt' read slash and contextually knew at the time the plotlines to three of the winning GO stories.

Now, my question--are there any fandoms who have had more than one major pairing of the same type at the same time? As in, more than one major slash and more than one major het?

Since Trek, I've never been involved in a fandom that did, so I'm curious. And I'm not sure my memories of Trek are accurate, as this was 1999/2000 and I spent about half that time going, oh my God this is the best thing in the world! And um, writing Paris/Seven post-Paris/Torres breakup porn. Because I didn't like Seven and that's how I deal with dislike. It felt like Janeway/Chakotay and Paris/Torres had similiarly strong followings, though J/C was a bit older and larger, and Chakotay/Paris and Paris/Kim seemed relatively even (in retrospect, the locked archives actually skew it even more; I never even *knew* about some of them before Smallville).

I'd ask what everyone thinks influences a pairing to be written, but the answers will be, invariably:
a.) Lots of feedback! OR Feedback doesn't matter! Etc. Etc. Etc.
b.) BNFs! OR BNFs turn me off pairings! Etc. Etc. Etc.
c.) Big Pairings are sheep! OR Rare pairing are boring! Etc. Etc. Wait, didn't we do this recently?
d.) Blah. Blah. Blah. Blah. (insert here)

I always wondered if it was just a moment of fannish--unity, if you will, like when a mob forms. Like, remember when you went to cheer at a football game and suddenly in the third quarter and while you've never been the perkiest cheerleader and kinda quiet, you're suddenly filled with bloodlust and helping to lead the crowd in screaming BEAT THE WATERPIGS and lost your voice for a day? (They were hippos. Yes, we got in some much trouble for that one. So very much worth it.) (My algebra teacher was louder than all of us together, though.)(I don't miss being a cheerleader. I do, however, miss controlling crowds with five inches of thigh and some belled shoes. Seriously. I still marvel at that.)

Yes, I'm going to be this incoherent all day; I had no sleep. Also trying to get my John/Ronon recs together, since I kind of think I should feedback the authors and then give the fic their own page.

sup speaks at lj_2008

[livejournal.com profile] lj_2008 has posted an apology and some future possibilities for Livejournal here. I'm--

Hmm. I'm cynical, I admit it. I'm lazy; I admit that too. I'm really, really lazy. But more than those two things, I'm situationally cynical; this is why it is really creepily easy to have a semi-flamewar with me and a week later I will like, talk about your awesome because you posted a picture of John in boxers New. Best. Friend. I like low-stress and prefer not to worry until forced into the situation. I also have no memory to speak of--that is why sometimes entries have weird details sometimes. It's how I keep a context memory.

my navel-gazing, let me show it to you )

So. I think watching and waiting is a sensible idea. There is stuff on there that makes me wary, but with the advertising, as long as it stays out of the venue of the paid, and I mean, completely out of the venue of the paid, I'm cool with that.

But this bit.

* Revenue sharing - Should users be rewarded for their content and contributions?
* Advertising – What are the best ways of integrating commercial opportunities (for both users and brands) into LiveJournal?
* Subscriptions – Should moderators be able to charge for access to closed communities?

A. If by revenue sharing, they mean, giving access to invite codes/equivalent for basic or paid accounts? I wouldn't actually be opposed. I don't feel comfortable at all with the money side, but blogging for extra icons or gifts of paid accounts doesn't hit my uncomfortable place. I don't think. I reserve the right to change my answer after more thinking and/or other views.

B. No, not so much.

C. Hmm. Okay, that one--I don't know what to make of it. I think I'd contribute, for example, as a member of Community of Awesome to get it paid status or permanent or for perks for it, but for that community. Other than that, I'm kind of confused. But I'm also aware that the comms I am enthusiastic in are fannish and have totally different content. Maybe there are comms that would use/benefit/like this kind of thing? No idea.

Um. YMMV, per usual. Still mulling. I really wish we had a metafandom equivalent for lj where all the lj meta is collected for reading and mulling. And no, I cannot imagine how huge that project would be, but if anyone starts one, I'd be happy to volunteer on it. Or is there one of those already? *curious*
