From:My answer: I can't find anyone who has actually asked that (except you) and I've never done it, and my criteria for a yes or no requires one of those two are met (preferably both). So I went backward and checked the drives I use and both specifically mention they run on Windows (a lot of versions) and don't mention macs.
So this is probably a drive compatibility issue, not a firmware or flashing one, but I have yet to meet an optical drive that wasn't OS agnostic, or couldn't easily be made agnostic with minimal work. I run my drives on ubuntu and windows interchangeably; I did the flash in Windows but teh drive still acted the same when hooked up to my linux machine (tested with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Mint Cinnamon now). My guess is, if the drive will run on your mac fine before the firmware flash, it will after; the only thing the flash is doing is changing to an older version of the firmware that was made by the company, not anything Windows specific.
I've googled and read around, and as yet, I can't find anything that suggests there would be a problem, but honestly, I can't find a refernce to the issue at all and that would have come up somewhere. And I really can't think of a reason it would be a problem.
