Wow. That was scary. Lex is like Jesus in the desert.
-- pricklyelf, on why Lex goes bad
LJ - Obi-Wan has a sort of desperate, pathetic patience in this movie. You can just see it in his eyes: "My padawan is a psychopath, and no one will believe me; I'm barely keeping him under control and expect to wake up any night now to find him standing over my bed with a knife!"
-- Teague, reviewing "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones"

Beth: i was thinking more to demagnitize my credit card.

From:on the ribbon there's a single button that changes everything to All Caps or All Lower or All Something Else, did y'all know about that?
Yes, I did. It's kind of wonderful -- although these days I work so much in Excel that I tend to use the =LOWER/UPPER/PROPER formulas to do that work for me.
Mostly, I know it because I've done those basic computing courses, In 98, I was finishing high school and for some reason, they were offering free short technical courses to families on welfare -- so I spent a saturday learning about Excel, and another one on Word, and Powerpoint. And then a few years later, I was doing 18 months work experience as part of my degree, and was offered an business admin apprenticeship. (In hindsight, it meant that if I completed the course, my employer got a $4K grant -- hence the suggestion.) But it was a fairly easy 6 month course with monthly meetings and while some of it wasn't needed (like professional ways to answer a phone call, or how to maintain a filing system), the basics of Excel and Word were good to have. Especially things like MailMerge, which are so useful but not something you need often.
I mean, if you had a gun to my head and told me to relive my childhood RIGHT NOW I remember 'pen pals' and 'encyclopedias' and 'microfiche searches of multiple libraries to find this book I really wanted when I was in my teens'.
Yes, I remember microfiche and encyclopedias (mostly because I read Wikipedia the way I used to read encyclopedias -- look something up, read about it, and then look up the "read more" types and find yourself reading about somethign completely random half an hour later), but fandom has been email and mailing lists since I was 16.
it was like eeevverryyone but me had PhD's in Computer Shit and the Internet Thing
You know what? It did feel like everyone else knew the Computer Magic. Personally, apart from a brief stint with Geocities, I was quite happy not to drill down too much into that widardry and just accept whatever other people could share for setting up pages. Honestly, the best part of AO3 becoming a huge thing was no longer having to do the html coding to maintain a (very lousy) site.
