She-Ra, Princess of Power

I have been super wary ever since I saw She-Ra was available at Amazon, because it's She-Ra and I would not have its awesomeness diminished by no longer being pre-pubescent. Then my niece craftily slipped it into the X-Box and suddenly I was watching the first week-long beginning and it is still awesome. Secret twin sister! Moral ambiguity! Flying unicorn companion which hello, not only is Adora able to capture He-Man before she was She-Ra, when she's She-Ra, she can do everything He-Man can do while wearing awesome heels and rides a flying unicorn.

Let me just say this again. She rides a flying unicorn. Just. I cannot imagine how this show could be more awesome.

Noted, however: I now get why Adam and Adora have different mantra to become their superpowered (WITH MAGICAL FLYING UNICORN!) selves; Adam was raised a price, lazy, a little self-centered, and maybe a little spoiled (and considered by some quite useless), so he calls on power; Adora was raised and trained by the Hoarde and was instrumental in some of their conquests and enslavement of Etheria's races; honor would be more important to her.

It was like seeing old friends; the Sorceress and Teela and Glimmer and Angella and Catra of the awesome eyeshadow and Shadow Weaver, who really needs her own evil army because Hordak is just not very great at it, and Bo and some other random villains and soforth.

And Spirit the flying unicorn. Just. Yes.

*hands* Happy.

ETA: Tygress links to gorgeous She-Ra artwork here by nebezial. Holy God, yes.

SHE-RA!!!

I had She-Ra with her unicorn and awesome sword and my big brother had He-Man and Skeletor. Pfft. I so had the better deal. *g*

I remember having recorded an episode or two that I would watch when I was sick. I was so pissed when brother taped over it!

I watched that while it was airing and my sister and I had as many of the toys as we could get bought for us, but then I outgrew it. A few years back, my sister got back into it in a major way -- like, one of her tattoos is a little rainbow creature that shows up in the background of every episode, apparently, and she's got a bunch of the toys that she rebought via eBay (sometimes from foreign countries) and I think she got the series itself off Amazon recently, too.

I bought the series as soon as it came out, and have been introducing [personal profile] katarik to it ever since.

I love your meta re: Adam and Adora, and why they call power differently.

...damnit still need to make She-Ra icon.

I remember my parents explaining why He-Man and She-Ra could never get married.

Nothing beats an "incest is wrong and illegal and WRONG!" discussion with your parents at 9 years of age.

I watched that when I was VERY wee. OMG. As in - I remember my father doing the VOICES..and have the vaguest recollection of the actual cartoon. And um. yeah, there is a story about Skeletor that I should tell you...

Oh, God, I remember one of my friend's younger sister getting lost in K-Mart, going to Customer Service, like she was told to do if she got lost, and identifying herself only as She-Ra!!! Her mother about died when paged, but knew where her daughter was, after 10 minutes of frantic searching. We still razz the sister about this, and her 14 year old daughter has joined us. Go She Ra!!!

I'm exactly the same, but it's good to know I can breathe a sigh of relief and be certain that it's precisely as awesome as I remember it being.

When my 30 days of female characters meme asked me for my favourite female character from my childhood, there was no question that I would pick She-Ra. :D

I'm moderating a panel at Wiscon with this description:
She-Ra, Pirates of Dark Water, and Gargoyles all feature issues of revolution, resistance to the state/corporation, and environmentalism in the context of the show. Are we watching creative fantasies that we'll never realize or do the fantastical elements somehow make these utopian ideals seem achievable?

despite never having seen any of those cartoons. This is supposed to be okay, because the panelists are there to talk and I am just there to direct conversational traffic, but last year I freelance moderated a panel where two panelists didn't show up and the other two weren't very interested in talking and it was.... I never, ever want to do that again. So I'm kind of franticly doing the background research.

Can you suggest any particular episodes or plot arcs of She-Ra I should familiarize myself with?

I had a She-Ra doll. I used to make her ride the My Little Ponies, though that would sometimes make her legs snap off.

I had--three? And two Bo's. Oh man, mine rode the My Little Ponies and sometimes were hitched to a prairie wagon. I miss them. *wistful*

It's available streaming on Netflix and I watched a few episodes. It's more hilarious and yet somehow less cracktastic than I remember it being.

Also, I kind of died a little in the first episode when there's the shot of Adam and Bow sharing a horse ride, Bow with his heart emblem and Adam in his pink finery holding on from behind...

All in all, though, it didn't make me weep for my childhood the way, say, revisiting 21 Jump Street did.

..I've been tempted to go check it out. But yeah, something makes me nervous about it.

I forgot how interesting the storylines were. I can't wait to meet Sea Hawk again. I also forgot how weird Bo's voice is. It's not--what is that accent?

Man, I loved She-Ra when I was a little girl. He-Man too, but She-Ra and Jem were the only two 'girly cartoons' I allowed myself. (I was determined not to be Girly.)

I need to watch He-Man again to see if it still looks the same as it did when I was a kid. Because when I was little I was utterly convinced in a that's-so-obvious way that Skeletor and the Sorceress had once been Together, possibly before he turned to evil. My theory in my little-kid brain was that NOBODY could hate each other that much unless they'd spent a lot of time together.

I couldn't figure out how they kissed when he didn't have lips, though.

It's a reasonable theory! I am vaguely partial to the Man at Arms/Sorceress potential. *speculative* And possibly Adam/Glimmer, IDK.

She-Ra. Oh, the hearts. (MY MOTHER SENT THE BOOKS TO OXFAM. I HAD TO SCOUR EBAY.)

Or as I put it, first 99.9% gay cartoon for kids. And yeah, Adora was competent to *begin with*. And suffers no fools. But is not afraid to go 'oh, that's adorable'
