ljarchive

Okay, those who know: ljarchive off sourceforge. If you have used it, post here? I used it a *long* time ago but haven't since and close friend needs help.

Also, for anyone: it can never hurt to do a backup.

ETA:

For Macs, two programs were mentioned in [livejournal.com profile] catrinella's lj here and here.

Thanks for the link: I was just wondering how to backup an LJ.

This really, really sucks.

P.S. I just used it. Very easy and worked like a charm. Requires username and password, though.

What did your friend need help with? I use & have LJArchive on my PC.

I don't even have any idea how to set it up. Basically, I got linked to this: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=143280&package_id=157384&release_id=403625

Now what? Do I download all that stuff? And then what? *feels very stupid*

[identity profile] cetpar.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I just DL and used it. It was pretty painless.

I have a Windows PC, so I just DL the 4th file down--the one with the .exe extenstion. It's a self extracting installation so just double click and follow the instructions. Once installed do file-->new archive (I think--it tells you). It will ask for your username and password & where to store the archive, and that's it.

download the windows ready
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<a [...] file</a>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

download the windows ready <a href="http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ljarchive/ljArchive-0.9.7.exe?modtime=1143049932&big_mirror=0"exe file</a> then double click on it to install the software. then run ljA, and give it the details it needs to archive your journal.

I see that [livejournal.com profile] kheryn42 already commented, but here's more instructions if anyone needed it:

1. Download ljArchive-0.9.7.exe (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=143280&package_id=157384&release_id=403625).
2. Install & run.
3. File > New Archive. Indicate where you want to save it > Next. Type in your login info. If you want to backup a community, after you've type in your login info, check "I want to archive the following community" under Community and it'll listed communities you have access to. Click Next > Finish.
4. ljArchive will then automatically sync your journal and anytime you login with ljArchive. If you want to manually sync it later, go to Tools > Sync.
5. To backup your journal (instead of just saving it as a ljArchive file), go to File > Export and depending on which format you want to backup it in, choose HTML Journal Writer or XML Writer (if you want to import your entries to another blog like WordPress). Indicate where you want to save your backup and how you want to split your entries (by month, date, etc.). Click okay and ljArchive should have your entries saved where you indicated it.

ljArchive also has some other great features if you want to explore it.

Thank you, that is really great! I'll try it out in more detail when I have a little more time, but this is more than enough to get started. :-)

It's telling me that I need to auto-convert something which is a field I remember *used* to be on the edit profile page but I can't find any more. Anyone know where it went?

Related: I've only just tried ljArchive (trying to be productive instead of panicking right now), and it works fine-- but only archived the last five years of my journal (only Jun 2002 -> present; I'd forgotten how long I'd been here.)

Does anyone know of any alternative software that also doesn't limit like this, or can tell me how to get around this using ljArchive?

Hee. The download history for the LJbackup files show a huge jump today, up from below 10/hour over the past week.

I've been using ljarchive for quite a while, with no complaints. I really like that it also backs up comments, in addition to entries.

I made sure to do a backup yesterday, just in case.

*sigh*

ljarchive & Comments

[identity profile] taverymate.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind that if you're a community member, NOT a moderator, then you can only backup the community posts, NOT comments. So it's a good idea to gently remind the moderators of your favorite LJ communities to do official backups, and not rely on member backups which will be incomplete.

Thanks very much, I have just backed up without any hassle. I also linked to it in my post on the issue.

thanks for the link to the Mac program !

also, I found two other programs for Win users, in case you would like alternatives:

http://ljbook.com/
A LJ Book is a book with all your entries extracted from your LiveJournal, DeadJournal or AboutMyLife.
It's a PDF Document ready to print. It's produced in about 3-4 minutes.
The high quality PDF is produced by LaTeX.

http://www.win32utils.com/alj/
ALJ is a program for exporting complete user's journal including all comments into plain files. Once journal is downloaded, program can check if new entries are available, download them and add to plain file.

Thank you for providing this information! It worked beautifully. I have my fic stored on at least two computers and several archiving sites, but it was my comments I was worried about. I am so relieved now. Thank you, thank you! :)
