happiness is apparently science

I've been kind of tense the last few days.

So back two months ago, I went in for an interview at a place near my work. I was nervous and worried and kept thinking I was saying the wrong thing all the time, and Nick sat with me and tried to pretend he didn't know me while chatting with the interviewer. And they said, we'll call you May 15th and tell you, and I said sure, and yesterday they didn't call.

Today, they did.

The interview wasn't for a job, it was for my son to attend the Harmony Science Academy Charter School, elementary level, which is new in Austin and starts its first semester this year. It's lottery, which means only a set number of kids are accepted and it's random. And I put in Nick's app like, the first day the webpage showed that they were opening an elementary branch in Austin. But once he's in, he's good, I think, through high school in the Harmony system.

So today, they called, and today, he was accepted, and today, I nearly bit through my lip and almost broke Nick's ribs when I ran out to tell him.

He's going to have to wear a *uniform*. It's so cute!

I am so--I have no idea. I think happy so does not cut it. This is a triple espresso kind of thing.

Also, because this amuses me, my manager is hiring three new people and I applied for one of the jobs. The amusing part is I was also the one screening the applications. And dear God, do a lot of people have better qualifications than I do. And you know what? I do not *care*.

(also, I split the apps innto three groups: Best, Less than a Year Experience, and Are You Kidding Me? On post-its. You have to wonder sometimes how he gets through the day when he's at meetings adn remembers I have a key to his file cabinets.)

Congratulations! You will have to give me the lowdown. I got some of their promotional stuff in the mail a few weeks ago and I wondered what it was like.

[identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
So far, it looks interesting, and I like the emphasis on science and math and the extracurricular activities look inntersting.

Will totally keep lj updated on it.

Thanks!

Yay on getting hm into the school you wanted! Wheee!

So what makes this place the best of the best? (besides the uniform?)

I'm starting the research that may eventually lead me to homeschooling Rei. After working in the Elementary school for a year and a half, I have decided that I really don't want her going through fourth and fifth grade there.

So.

I am not sure what will happen next, But I have a year to decide. Third grade is the Nirvana grade at our school. All the best teachers!

:-)

[identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's public but charter, so it has different rules than AISD does. It has a very strong science program and it's--God. The extracurricular activites, the emphasis on acadmics, the--wait. You are on AIM. Iw ill tell you there.

That anonymous comment that you are screening? Yeah - that was from me.

Yay! for you & Child.
i love your organizational system, btw
and for goodness sakes, yes, apply! they may or may not have better qualifications, but none of them have quite your worldview

Great! The right school makes all the difference. And may I say (as a mother who sent her daughter to a Catholic girls school) uniforms ROCK. The kids don't have to worry about what to put on each morning, and there is no competition about who has the better clothes, shoes, etc.

Congratulations on your son being excepted to the school!! And good luck with the position, hey go for it, I've seen people with qualifications up the ying yang not get jobs and others get them, you've got the history with them so your name should go to the top of the list.

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great
Little kids in uniform are so Cute especially on their first day (is he going to be able to keep his socks pulled up??)

And your early mother's day pressie from the other day? Is it framed already? If not it should be!

Hey, congrats to you both! It sounds like a great program.

*reads over all the 'uniform love' and just...shudders*

My daughter's school went to uniforms last fall and she is 'STILL' ranting about the unfairness of it. She has progressed from fairly reasonable complaints (in a letter to the school board -and- to the local newspaper) to declaring her school a 'facist state' (the mind boggles) intent on not only stifling her creativity but on totally squashing any spark of individuality she has and ultimately destroying her 'soul'.

(all her words...not mine...sigh - she is only 11...I doubt I will survive her teenage years)

Oh, a tip. Buy his uniforms early. The closer to school the more insane the shopping and trying to find the right sizes becomes. ;)

I'm so happy for your son! A friend just got her boy into the Math/Science Magnet School--LBJ? And she's torn between worrying that he won't be able to keep up with the workload and relieved that she can finally save for collge, as he's been going to St. Paul Lutheran since he was in kindergargten.

I'm going to MediaWest--let me know if you want anything in particular. You won't have to worry about shipping, since I live in Austin too.
