I wait to hear Scott's commanding voice. A noise. Interference. Anything.

If you're looking for good XMM fic, try His Terrible Swift Sword (http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/brackets/bracketfic/SwordIntro.htm) by Yahtzee. I don't read much XMM these days, but this was recommended to me, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot. It's an incredible story. Highly, highly recommended.
