Bestiality Law? Florida Takes Another Shot At Passing Bill

As everyone who has ever reported this story will tell you, "Florida is one of only a dozen or so states that don't have a law against bestiality on the books." So, Democratic State Senator Nan Rich is taking her second shot at getting a law passed that would criminalize this sort of thing. This past Monday, the State Senate, by unanimous vote, passed a law that would make this sort of thing "a first-degree misdemeanor... with a penalty of up to a year in jail." It now goes to the State House, where a similar measure spurred by Rich and passed by the Florida State Senate last year failed to pass, despite the fact that it was pretty clear about how it was about people in Florida copulating with dogs and goats and whatnot

I'll be honest. This is not a law I would think anyone would really like, need to debate that much. Should you or should you not have sex with Fluffy the Hamster or Polly the Pig? That is not what I'd call a difficult question, okay?

My argument: because classics are classics because they are old and stylistically sometimes pretty goddamn boring.

Long version is like, five pages long and I removed it because apparently, I am surprisingly adamant on like, why literacy is not the same as reading and teaching one does not bestow understanding the second with an intersection into classism in literature, which is just kind of weirdly unsettling to read now. With anecdotes, even.

I will leave with this--kid's version of Moby Dick? Not better than the long version, but so much shorter.

While I'm against harming animals, I'm also against legislating what people do... well, I was going to say in their bedrooms, but..., but my point stands.

Also, it's really, well, let's go with interesting, what the internet turns out when you even only peek under the surface (nobody will be surprised at this and it's my own fault, but I couldn't look away (I do mean look, there is video, let me tell you.) Also, accounts of sex with dolphins and wiki articles on zoophilia and maybe I should have resisted my curiosity (that is also what compelled me to surf that side on body-mods and I had NOT known the things people could do) but this is not why I'm here, except maybe to say, that while I'm not going to be going arround lobbying for people to be allowed to have sex with animals, I'm also not comfortable with simply laughing at "those weirdoes". (Ehm, sorry for any amout of TMI, sometimes I curse my curiosity too, this does not help me stay away most of the time, sadly.)

I guess my main point (excuse my rambling) would actually be the question of: Is this kind of behaviour so frequent (and frequently observed) that we need to make laws about it? How often has anybody who lives where such laws existactually been sued for something like this?
Of course there need to be laws to protect animals from harm, but I'm somewhat doubtful that this is the best way to go about it.

Someone a few years ago on the MS Gulf Coast somewhere, got arrested and his horses taken away when they found he was... yeah.

So maybe that's a common thing?

And speaking of wikipedia, don't dolphins find people attractive? Does that count if the dolphin starts it? *ponders*

The article has specific links to incidents in Florida, but yeah, sex with animals isn't that rare; most recently there was a movie, I think, about a man who has sex with his horse and gets a perforated colon, based on a true story.

It's depressing to think about it, but it may indeed be something that has to be addressed.

Nice (or better not so nice) thing with the horses... I just sometimes can't help wondering whether the horses actually minded at all, because considering size issues, they maybe barely noticed... Not that I'd recommend such activities. I just wonder how much we have and enforce these kinds of laws because we're worried about the animals (which I find legit) and how much it's just about the UHHHHHGGGGGHH ICKY!!!! (which I'm not for).

I think it's protecting animals since by nature, we tend to have a hard line about sex being consensual in general, and there's no possible way it can ever be between animals and humans.

Even if someone or some animal displays sexual interest, a woman flirting or a dog humping your leg until they can say "yes" no sexual intercourse should take place. Ever. And if we don't have laws in place like this, people will continue to do it knowing there is no consequence for there actions.

I see your point. I don't think that women (passed out ot not) and horses are interchangable, but I can understand where you're coming from.
I've not been meaning to say that I'm for sex with animals, as especially domesticated ones are dependent upon humans, but I don't think that the people who experience these desires should be laughed about (because mocking is rarely helpful).

Sweden does in fact not have a law against bestiality (WHY THE HELL NOT, I ASK), and there's this youtube clip from the last time the debate was up of the debate in parliament when the then-current minister of health (oh I wish I was kidding) commented that the boundaries would be hard to set: "Would it in fact be wrong to smear something on your sex that smells good to your dog and let them lick it off? Would it be wrong to caress the teats of your sow?"

I have SO MANY FEELINGS for the topic, ON BOTH SIDES.

Cause, the thing is, I kind of hate a lot of the classics but also feel BAD about hating classics. I don't actually see anything wrong with works being derivative as long as they find something new or emotionally resonant in whatever they're taking from. (My problem with the HECK movie is more that all the reviews I read were lukewarm-to-negative enough that I ended up not getting the book, while PERFECTLY GOOD NOVELS are being ignored.)
