Modern lit criticism . . . between the Death of the Author and the simultaneously-existing tendency to treat the work and the author as the same thing with regard to the author's real or even perceived bad behavior (how this is supposed to work if the author is dead, I haven't figured out yet), all I can say is that I'm glad that I got my degree in medieval literature, where all of our authors were safely and genuinely dead and most of them were anonymous.
