The sober-companion gimmick may be part of this, but even though they're starting to play up Liu's interest in cases, they're not showing her joy enough. And that's one of the things that's great about ACD's Watson, to me, one of the things that absolutely makes the character: Watson *loves* seeing Holmes do what Holmes does. He really enjoys it, tries his hand at it on occasion. But I don't get that sense from Liu's Watson yet.

That part yes, but that part makes sense--and this is just me--that she's not that Watson yet. In this case, because of where they started, I like the idea of her developing into that because of meeting Sherlock and getting into the mystery. A Watsonian arc, instead of a hero's arc, if you will. It almost feels like a very weird version of the Young Sherlock Holmes and Young Watson, when he's less put together and a lot less Sherlock and they're meeting then,, with both of them at the same level. I can see how it wouldn't work for a lot of people, though; I'm just a huge fan of origin stories where you see the steps that get people to where they're going, or are going to be.

The addict thing I did not think about, and I should have. That would be a very interesting backstory.
