Agree so much re everyone on the Enterprise being crazy smart. Starfleet officers who get assigned to the Federation flagship are the best of the best of the best, how do people not understand that??

(and to a lesser extent DS9, though DS9 had a much higher proportion of alien, and I wasn't a regular watcher, they could have been much more diverse and I just don't remember; I watched for Sisko and Jadzia, basically)

DS9 had Sisko, Jake, and Bashir for regular cast, then Worf (if we count actors of colour playing aliens). Also Keiko (and Molly and Kirayoshi) O'Brien and Kassidy Yates for recurring characters. But IMO the real hero of DS9 re casting diversity was Avery Brooks, who fought to get actors of colour for guest roles, to keep Sisko from being white-washed or the writers from perpetuating stereotypes. I've never seen anything Brooks did besides DS9, but I fell in love with him as a human being just from watching Penny Johnson (Kassidy) and Cirroc Lofton (Jake) talk about him in the DVD interviews :D
