It's an interesting choice. She's very conservative down the line (which is good for McCain) but she has no real experience- she's a first term governor of Alaska and has only been in office for 1.5 years. Also, she's probably going to be under indictment soon for firing her former brother-in-law.
But on a personal note, I feel kind of bad for her. She just had a kid a few months ago, and trying to campaign and care for him (and I think he has Downs Syndrome) isn't going to be a good time.
I've heard that too, but my initial understanding was that she instructed the aide. My info might be wrong- it was from a political blog, not a traditional news source...
The rumors floating around are that she had the aide press Monegan, then Public Safety Commissioner, to fire Wooten. When it didn't happen, Monegan was asked to resign. The Legislature has a special prosecutor investigating. The trooper, who had a long history of serious infractions (http://www.adn.com/politics/story/476430.html), has since quit, and the aide has been fired.
From everything I've heard, it sounds like the guy is a violent ass who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a police station except in handcuffs. It would still be inappropriate if she did try to use her position to get him fired, let alone drag Moneghan else into the middle of it (which is entirely unproven), but you know, if I *knew* a guy was a violent, child-abusing bastard who'd threatened members of my family, I think the temptation to try to use all the powers at my disposal remove him from a position of power would be pretty nearly overwhelming. It sounds a whole lot worse to say "She tried to use her position to have her sister's ex-husband fired" than "She tried to use her position to fire a trooper who terrorized his ex-wife and tasered an 11-year-old."
My foul. I could have sworn I read something about him quitting, buried in another recent article, but I can't find it. As for what you wrote above: exactly. Couldn't have said it better.
