For me, who knows nothing about acting, the best I can do with whether or not TV acting is "good" is
1) if I bought what just happened or was thrown out of the story (for example, Daniel Jackson's actor has several times thrown me out of the story), and
2) whether or not I'd want to see him in something else (for example, I saw Hewlett in cube and had no trouble with the line between McKay and Worth. Of course, I can't watch Methos' actor in anything but Highlander, and I loved him as Methos.)
I can't really judge Flanigan's acting very well since it's become John for me. Though I remember just, wow, being aware of really liking him in Phantoms as an actor, which had never happened before. This makes me think of what samdonne said about voice control, since I often find the delivery of his lines a little odd, but I loved his expressions. (Of course, all of that oddness has become Sheppard for me. :D )
Interesting point about the flamboyant actors! I think it's a lot easier to notice that, "Hey! He's acting!"
