Actually, if you want to do dev work for AO3, you don't necessarily need Ruby on your laptop, they're providing hosted dev environments on a linux box. OR if you like virtualbox, you can run a virtual ubuntu box and do dev work on there.

Ruby works well on linux but not the package ruby, which is my 1 exception to the rule, rvm rocks my socks....I know these things...I could go on for a while.
