So I wanted some comfort fic and went to look up some old favorites. Most of these I've recced before.

Yet Another Snape Meets the Dursleys Story by rabbit and v-Jinx-v, Harry Potter, gen - totally gen h/c emotional porn. I love this story. This is one of my go-to comfort fics for the entire Snape Meets The Dursleys, Realizes How Much They Suck, Hates Them So Much, Is Generally Fucking Kick Ass and Super Competent While Dudley Turns Out to Eventually Be Awesome and Snape and Harry Bond So Much. It hits all my gen h/c kinks, with the Pathetic!Brave!Stoic! So!Goddamn!Gryffindor!Harry and Reluctantly!Admitting!Bias!Against!Harry! And!Uber!Competent!Snape and the sucky Dudsleys so very much told on child abuse and being shitty human beings and my personal favorite Personal!Growth!Dudley.

..wow, count those capital letters.

Nightblooming Heartsease by [livejournal.com profile] julad fic Transfigurations (Harry Potter, Harry/Draco) which is also a favorite fic but not a comfort fic. If you've read this, you may or may not get why I love this one when I really want to feel warm and fuzzy because yeah, I know how it ends, but ending was part of the journey and the entire thing is gorgeous. The author created the prequel whole as an exploration of the lives of Snape and Neville during war that occurred before the events of Transfigurations and took great pains to not only write fully-fleshed, three dimensional characters but a fully fleshed, uncertain, gorgeous three dimensional relationship that explained how being different people didn't necessarily mean there isn't common ground to be explored and cherished. It's wartime desperation and amazing domestic sweetness and two people who work together and learn together and then fall in love together. Warning: character death. But honest to God, that's part of what makes it comfort fic.

Goodnight Moon by yahtzee, Joan of Arcadia/The Day After Tomorrow crossover, gen - it's wistful and dreamy and sad in the very best, most uplifting, most human way possible. When this hit fandom, I think everyone recced it. And it was totally worth it.

An Affair to Remember by Tira Nog, SGA, AU, John/Rodney - yes, it's a SGA version of the movie. This is emotional porn for me. I only read it once a year now so as to keep that fresh reaction of just ridiculous amounts of tear-wiping and contented purring.

Fearless, Mindless Fancy by [personal profile] giddygeek, SGA, AU, John/Rodney - it's adorable and creepy and wonderful adn so much fun. John is a psychic! Rodney has a TV show about science and debunks this kind of thing! THEY THEN HUNT GHOSTS!

Benediction by [livejournal.com profile] thete1 - this was one of the earliest Smallville fics written and still among my absolute favorite for being gorgeous and sweet and everything Lex and Clark could have been.

Ice by [personal profile] merryish, Smallville, Clark/Lex - I love this story. There is a storm! And a barn! And Clark and Lex with no idea what the hell they're doing but going to try anyway. You know. To keep warm. Emotional intensity plus hotness can never go wrong. <--link corrected, thanks to [personal profile] merrily for the link

Omiai by Rose Emily, Smallville, AU, Clark/Lex - arranged marriage fic! Secretly falling in love! Angst! God, this one is every cliche I love done briliantly well. And long, long, long.

Primary by velvetglove, Smallville, Clark/Lex - a long, slow, deliciously building relationship after many years and much heartbreak and so wallowable.

Loves Me Not by [personal profile] astolat, SGA, John/Rondey - in which nothing in this not hilarious and sweet and funny and adorable and sure, Rodney loves chocolate, but kind of thinking that's not the only reason it goes this way.

If anyone wants to throw out their go-to-comfort fics? I would not like, be opposed or anything.
isagel: Clark Kent of Smallville, beautiful, with the text 'poets dreamed of angels'. (sv poets by oxoniensis)

Primary! Oh, the nostalgia! I beta'd that for Jed back in the day, and I still every so often find myself thinking about how blue is "the skim-milk cyanotic tinge of Lex's skin before their lips met for the first time", because I will never fall out of mad love with that phrase.

This is an awesome selection of heartwarming fic.

Also, I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Comfort fic!

Freeport, by Maldoror (Gundam Wing)
Freeport colony: a notorious den of pirates, smugglers and thieves. Wufei persuades one of its denizens, his one-time ally Duo, to help him catch a killer hiding there. Agent Chang thinks he knows what to expect, from this case, from Freeport and from Duo Maxwell. He couldn't be more wrong. (Duo/Wufei)

Always a Woman, by Arsenic Jade (Gundam Wing)
How things look from where Une is standing.

Shade of the Leaf, by Ravyn (Naruto)
Sasuke is back. Naruto has joined ANBU. Sakura is spending more time in the hospital than in the field. Team 7 struggles to redefine itself, because sometimes you don't know what you really want after all. NaruSaku. (48,294 words)

A Very Long Summer, by Calathea (I Want to Go Home!)
Mike and Rudy go back to Camp Algonkian Island... as counsellors! (37,000 words)

Cradle Robbing, by Metisket (Fullmetal Alchemist)
I don't know how to summarize this fic, so have a quote instead:
“But, dude, knock off the stalking. It’s creepy. It is my job to be creepy, and I don’t like it when upstart kids horn in on my turf.”

“I don’t do it often,” he said, shrugging. “I just…every once in a while have to check that she hasn’t gotten killed or something.”

“How fucking romantic,” Rebecca cooed. “And when I say romantic, I mean weird. Can’t you just go to the door and ask her out like a normal person?”

The look she got for that one was grim. Like, depths-of-despair type grim. “I’m too young for her,” he said. Must have been a thought that tortured him daily or something, given his expression.

But to this argument, Rebecca was inclined to reply, Yeah right. Check out those eyes, twenty going on Hohenheim. He wasn’t too young for anybody.

This was an insecurity thing, though. Rebecca knew you couldn’t attack insecurity things straight on, because they weren’t logical. So she attacked sideways.

“Hey, cradle-robbing is just one of the many things I believe her totally capable of,” she said. “So cheer up, right? You may yet get jumped by scary older women.”

Only response she got to that was a smile of enormous self-mockery. “I’m sure you’re right,” he said. And then he just wandered off, like, too sexy to wait for a response.

The gauntlet, Rebecca thought, had definitely been thrown.

LoPiverse, by AJ Hall (Harry Potter)
Harry Potter futurefic, mostly written before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Draco/Neville, and the series that got me into fanfic. ^_^

Forward Momentum, by Bracketyjack (Vorkosigan)
This Miles fanfic novel of manners is in canon to A Civil Campaign and Winterfair Gifts, but AU to Diplomatic Immunity. Besides the devil making work for idle hands, and a runaway plot-bunny that most unnaturally mated with a New Year Resolution, it's mostly a result of upending LMB's creative rule of thumb about when in doubt making the worst possible thing happen. Suppose really good things started happening, and Miles was there to run with them... (~175,000 words)

If anyone wants to throw out their go-to-comfort fics? You mean besides yours?

I know everybody loves Merry's Ice, but my all-time favorite of hers is Downtime, a sweet Jack/Daniel pre-slash that just made of cute! Long, sweet, adorable cute, with a great ending for Sam, too. *happy place*

Springwoof's Left to Fend/The Body Holographic, epic 40 years of John/Rodney angst then OMG at the end. \o/

Sabershadowkat's Haven, Clark/Lex pure h/c + emotional porn. My id's reading habits, let me show you them.

Pru's Conflicts of Interest / Visiting Hours, Clark/Lex, plus CONNOR!!! Epic <3

Speaking of Pru: In-Law, Gibbs is trying to take care of an injured Tony, but his father is upsetting the apple cart. Shorter than the above, but made of HEE!

Dira Sudis's Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive, Jack/Ianto, angst, death, confusion, happy ending. (Written before The Ep That Doesn't Exist In My World, but, you know, not a bad idea.)

Zahra's The Kingdom of the Blaggers, Merlin/Arthur modern Hollywood AU (because bonus Ari Gold makes everything better!)

Gingertart's The Fourth Deathly Hallow, Snape/Harry—Snape, Harry, and Draco transported to Sherlock Holmes' Victorian London! <3

Tira Nog's A Nick In Time / Growing Pains, Snape/Harry—Snape and Harry get kid-ified. Oops, there's my id showing again!

You're more of a Drarry girl, yes? My fave is Vorabiza's Secrets, which kind of hits all your caps above, minus Pathetic, I think; it's more in the direction of Super!Harry. But I am so totally downloading that Dursleys story! (Did you see all the Dudley recs in [profile] crack_broom this month? \o/)

Happy post-Horace reading!

Yay for Nightblooming Heartsease and Transfigurations! :D The latter is one of the few Harry/Draco fics that I enjoyed reading, the former the only Neville/Severus that I remember reading.

I think just about everything by [livejournal.com profile] tiranog is comfortfic for me, but Catch a Fallen Star is probably my favourite.

These are so lovely! The first comfort fic thought I had was Setissa's Wide Open Ocean. SGA AU. I love it much for the Chicago setting, and oh, for being broken and figuring out how to be mended.

Many good thoughts your way!

Ooooh RECS! Thank you :D

My comfort fics... excluding things written by your good self, hmm.

At the moment, Reparations and Foundations, both H/D.

The Student Prince got me through mildly invasive eye exams today (in podfic form, that is; the link I've given goes to the text version).

Chaletian's Village!verse.

This one is not one of my comfort fics but it strikes me as something you might like: Degrees of Separation, a K/S fic which involves an emergency mindmeld, and also violence and torture (of them, by third parties), and eventually there is sex.

Robots Need Love Too, a Mythbusters space age primary-school AU.

Aaaand So Wise We Grow, a K/S kidfic (adoptive, not MPreg) epic, if that is your type of thing.

I know it's not really your fandom, but, uh, this is all about me that makes it more likely these will be new to you, right? My absolute go-to favorite fuzzy-blanket comfort story is [livejournal.com profile] setissma's Sam/Dean Long Lay the World. "Dean gives Sam a house for Christmas. THIS IS ALL THE SUMMARY YOU NEED."

A close second to that is [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze's Keep Our Minds on the Sum of Each Other (also Sam/Dean), my favoritest adorable hot bodyswap. "Our souls don't know who they belong to? What are they, retarded puppies?"

I also love Enough, a J2 story by [livejournal.com profile] topaz and [livejournal.com profile] without_me. It's a sequel to [livejournal.com profile] azewewish's Dirty, but you can pick up what you need to know about it from the second story, if you don't want to read the first story, which is Jared/CMM. It is -- incredibly porny, and rather kinky, and may tell you more about me than you knew, but ... I call it "schmoopy D/s comfort fic," and I love it. "Jared thinks Jensen can't give him what he needs. For as smart as Jared is, sometimes he's awfully pretty."

I also adore [personal profile] astolat's Time in a Bottle (John/Rodney), but, I mean, does anyone not know about that already?

And yet, do I have a comfortfic tag? No I do not.

- It's automatic (http://community.livejournal.com/tornadobelt/4082.html) by [livejournal.com profile] weatherfront

- Anal [Inception], or, Not Now, Cobb, We're Doing BGs (http://butterflythread.livejournal.com/68649.html) by [livejournal.com profile] butterflythread, aka the greatest WoW fanfic on earth.

A couple of other huge bullet-proof cheer-me-up fics:
- Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Denver.html) by Ces
- Strangers on a Six Train (http://eye-queue.livejournal.com/680.html) by [livejournal.com profile] eye_queue - both of these are McShep of course <3
- Three Tasks (http://syllic.livejournal.com/2021.html) by [livejournal.com profile] syllic, Arthur/Merlin
- Woke Up Married (http://celli.livejournal.com/931319.html) by [livejournal.com profile] celli, aka the best fake boyfriend fic ever to have a wild night in Vegas, omg. It's David Cook/David Archuleta, but PLEASE DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU OMG. <3
- the classic Open Doors (http://community.livejournal.com/contrelamontre/286115.html) by [livejournal.com profile] zionsstarfish, aka the one where Harry Potter shows up on Draco Malfoy's door. As a cat.

COMFORT AND HEALTH TO YOU, JENN <3

Ah bless. I can always use some comfort. I'm glad you're doing well, btw!

As for comfort fic, Omiai pretty much defines it for me. Back in the day I used to read it and Lanning's Identical stories back to back and then start over again. But I also adore punk's The Milk and Cookies War (http://home.teleport.com/~punkm/milkwar.html), because of the *yearning* and Lex's (thankfully failed) attempt to rationalize it away.

In SGA, comfort comes from ltlj's Retrograde (http://archiveofourown.org/series/455) series and the Hunting Parties (http://archiveofourown.org/series/460) series, especially the latter. I love the intertwined team dynamics in the former and the combination of outsider POV and delicious hurt/comfort in the latter. And the sly humor in both. Gentle humor is very comforting. I also love the grand/prosaic romance of Wesleysirl's On Life and the Living (http://home.comcast.net/~wesleysgirl/fanfiction/sga/life.html).

For Star Trek, you could re-read your own "You'll Get There In the End." Lord knows I do. *g* I love the flashbacks that fill in the blanks for the movie so perfectly and I love Spock's determination and logical purpose -- and the way it covers the fact that he won't admit he's jealous of his older self. (And I love, love, love the podfic version.)

Finally, a great Halloween story from the old X-Files days: The Dreaming Sea (http://members.fortunecity.com/spookyawards/dreamingsea.txt) by revely. This is (mostly) a case file that's funny and eerie and simply lovely.

Feel better soon. : )

Fellow Travellers (http://blackraptor.net/m7fic-21/travelers1.htm), by J. Brooks is my comfort Mag7 fic, it's AU and it's kidfic. It has a great premise, the kid reads just like you'd expect the child version of his character to act (it's Ezra in this fic), the relationships between all the characters is wonderful and hilarious. It also has an evil, bigoted villian, some child abuse, the mention of an Army Fort dying because of a disease outbreak, that's all the big things I can think of.

This fic is also the reason my friend and I randomly yell "KIOWA HEADLOCK" at each other in chat.

I also read lots of crack for comfort, laughing makes me feel better when I'm down.

[livejournal.com profile] entangled_now's Inappropriate Series (http://community.livejournal.com/libraryofsol/tag/series%3A%20inappropriate%20behaviour), it's Numb3rs, Don/Colby, ridiculously hot and laugh-out-loud funny

A Tale of Two Tails (http://kradamadness.dreamwidth.org/24901.html?#cutid1). This fic is a perfect example of why I love Kradamadness (http://kradamadness.dreamwidth.org/) like I do. Someone starts with the innocent intentions of making the month's prompt (sex) toys and what we end up with is fake robots, pig posters, and--as this fic demonstrates--weretigers and foxes. Actually, we've had a whole lot'a foxes this time around.

This pleases me.

2010-10-29 02:00 am (UTC)
Dare to Bake a Peach (http://community.livejournal.com/labyrinth_ex/9685.html) I suspect that this is only a h/c fic for me because I'm currently fumbling the transition from post-grad to actual career and this is such a smashing grown up food porn coda to Labyrinth.

Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance (http://mellacita.livejournal.com/767196.html) Because, much like the Clark/Lex dynamic, I don't believe that Arthur is owed Merlin's secrets. So I really love a story that shoves that in Arthur's face. And then they get on with the business of being awesomely destined or whatever after Arthur gets some perspective. “My father,” Merlin agreed, wiping at the skin beneath his eyes. “And he was going to help us even though Camelot ruined his life. So don't you dare point that sword that I sharpened for you at me and act like you're the only person in all of Albion who has ever been wronged or lied to or betrayed.”

When a Strawberry is Pushed to the Mountain (http://www.smallville.slashdom.net/archive/22/whena.html). I'm 100% sure you know this fic, but it's one of my favorite clex stories.

Hunger (http://epiphanyx7.dreamwidth.org/41064.html) Domestic-y (as much as you can get with Wolverine and Gambit). A relationship issue hashed out through communication (repeat parentheses). Hot p0rn (this one's probably easier to believe). That hadn't been the point at all, though, and it hits Remy deep in his gut. Logan had been looking for a place to settle down, somewhere people wouldn't treat them like shit or try and run them off. Looking for a run-down house to fix up, to put up the picket fence and paint it white, and how had Remy missed noticing that between the two of them it was Logan who was the teen-aged girl in their sadly dysfunctional relationship?

Oddly enough, my reread-to-feel-good fic:
SGA - synecdochic (http://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org)'s Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose
SPN - [livejournal.com profile] astolat's Old Country
Merlin - [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock's Drastically Redefining Protocol
Sherlock - [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings's Paradox series (this one is new to the rotation, but UNF SO GOOD)

(Oddly because Freedom... makes me cry every time, but in a good way. =)

Comfort fics?

I like long!fic best, so these are all kind of long.

Indelible (http://shaenie.livejournal.com/332275.html) by [livejournal.com profile] shaenie SGA McKay/Sheppard. This is my all-time favorite comfort fic because I can just sink into it and before I know it hours have passed. Those are the best kinds of stories.

Thicker than Water (http://www.yearningvoid.net/stories/julad/000086.html) by [livejournal.com profile] julad SGA McKay/Sheppard. I know this was Jossed in almost every way, but I still love it. It's a nice, homey fic that I just get the urge to read sometimes and I always sigh and think wistfully "Why couldn't it have been this way?" when I'm done.

The Girlfriend Experience (http://archiveofourown.org/works/91894?view_adult=true) by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock SPN Dean/Castiel I love this fic because Dean is still so screwed and just plain screwed up, but he's dealing with it, like actually dealing instead of wallowing as so many fics seem to make him. I just love this one so much. (Also, it's super hot and kind of hilarious)

Counting the Steps to the Door of Your Heart (http://annella.livejournal.com/1061203.html) by [livejournal.com profile] annella CWRPF J2 Jensen has a Dalek costume and is super socially awkward and also a geek. This is my all-time favorite J2 fic just because it isn't implausible or fantastic. I mean, the fic itself is fantastic, but...well everything's just so normal, but in a lovely sort of way. A *comfortable* way.

Your reboot duo is also on this list ♥. I love it so much.

2010-10-29 05:35 am (UTC)
Ice is one of my favorites too! It was one of the very first Clex stories I read and I LOVED it, but somehow I lost track of it, and when I found it again years late, I was so thrilled. (Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] merryish, her Fraser/Vecchio story That Eskimo Thing (http://www.anyroad.org/merry/eskimothing.html) is awesome. An Eskimos Made Them Do It story.)

Number one comfort fic is The Shoebox Project, but given its length, not very practical for rereads. So barring that:

Want (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_flashfiction/642034.html) by [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first. Due South, Fraser/Kowalski. Original premise, perfect payoff.

Done (http://abbybanks.livejournal.com/4946.html) by [livejournal.com profile] abbybanks. Due South, Fraser/Kowalski. Does a lot with very little.

Romeo in Black Jeans (http://www.unfitforsociety.net/musesfool/romeoinblackjeans.htm) by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool. HP, Remus/Sirius. Adorable boys being clueless and adorable.

After That (http://kaneko.livejournal.com/35408.html) by [livejournal.com profile] kaneko. Generation Kill, Brad/Nate. Tense and beautiful.

Pleasure Over Propriety (http://alethialia.livejournal.com/374712.html) by [livejournal.com profile] alethialia. Generation Kill, Brad/Nate. Brad finds porn written about them.

I am for my beloved (http://lunasky.livejournal.com/132172.html) and/or No OPLAN Ever Survives Initial Contact (http://lunasky.livejournal.com/132569.html) by [livejournal.com profile] lunasky. Generation Kill, Brad/Nate. Hits me where it counts both on the porn and emotional payoff meters.

2010-10-29 06:53 am (UTC)
Nightblooming Heartease is one of my comfort fics, too! Another sad fic that still manages to be a comfort fic for me is The Price We Pay for Wings (http://community.livejournal.com/hd_holidays/77197.html)

Omiai is also one of my favorites. Gosh, I love that story.

Hope your recovery goes well. Glad to see that your surgery went well. Thanks for the rec's. I just read Omiai and loved it. I had forgotten how much i love Clex, especially domesticated clex. And Omiai is one that somehow I had never read before, so it really made my day.

Two Weeks in the Alley - Harry Potter - A realistic look of what really happens when you give a 13 year old freedom and unlimited money for 2 weeks - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4036037/1/Two_Weeks_in_the_Alley

25 Stories Penknife Never Wrote About the Marauders - Harry Potter - I love the style and the flow of the story intersected and aided by the prompts. It makes me smile. http://archiveofourown.org/works/25946

Comedians - Doctor Who - I love all of Orange_Crushed's Who fic because I feel that her prose is perfectly suited to writing about people moving through the flow of time. http://orange-crushed.livejournal.com/103328.html

Heh, all of Tira Nog's stuff is total emotional porn for me. I cycle through reading An Affair to Remember, Resilience, and Growing Pains at least once a year. :)

Mine (http://www.corplink.com.au/~gillianm/Harry_Potter_Stories.htm) by Gillian. Amazing gen h/c Snape is Harry's bio-father and decides to raise Harry after seeing how the Muggles treat him. One of my top faves of all time. It hits all the right spots and the author does a great job with how little Harry might manifest the side-effects of being mistreated and how Snape tries to better him. There's a sequel, Snape's Vocation, along with short stories in the universe.

**It isn't DH compliant in the sense of how Snape feels towards Lily. But damn, there's a flashback that she twists his spite to suit herself. It gives me chills.

One of the many sections that never fail to make me cry and hurt with the love.

"Everyone looks very happy," Snape said, studying the wide crayoned grins the figures wore. With a long finger he pointed out the exception. "Except me."

"You're happy too," Harry said seriously. "But you don't smile with your mouth like everyone else."

Avoiding Dumbledore's gaze Snape kept his eyes on the brightly coloured picture. "How do you know I'm happy then?"

Harry pointed to a pink blob on the drawn figure Snape hadn't noticed before. "Your smile's in your heart, daddy."

Oh, my! I was tickled pink to stumble across this on a google search, because in an earlier life I was (or am) rabbit, of rabbit and jinx infamy. I'm so glad you liked the Snape/Dursleys epic, and your description of it will have me smiling for days. Thank you!

If you don't send me feedback, I will sob uncontrollably for hours on end, until finally, in a fit of depression, I slash my wrists and bleed out on the bathroom floor. My death will be on your heads. Murderers.

That's why he goes bad, you know -- all the good people hit him on the head or try to shoot him and constantly mistrust him, while there's this vast cohort of minions saying, We wouldn't hurt you, Lex, and we'll give you power and greatness and oh so much sex...

Wow. That was scary. Lex is like Jesus in the desert.

Obi-Wan has a sort of desperate, pathetic patience in this movie. You can just see it in his eyes: "My padawan is a psychopath, and no one will believe me; I'm barely keeping him under control and expect to wake up any night now to find him standing over my bed with a knife!"

Beth: god, why do i have so many beads?
Jenn: Because you are an addict.
Jenn: There are twelve step programs for this.
Beth: i dunno they'd work, might have to go straight for the electroshock.
Jenn: I'm not sure that helps with bead addiction.
Beth: i was thinking more to demagnitize my credit card.

It's weird, after you get used to the affection you get from a rabbit, it's like any other BDSM relationship. Only without the sex and hot chicks in leather corsets wielding floggers. You'll grow to like it.
